Eh. Explain? Eternia is not so bad.
To the guy that hates Guily Gear: Since when was Pot considered in the same level as Test/Eddie/Slayer? I always thought that those three were their own tier, and Pot was around the same level as Baiken, Jam, and possibly May and Millia.
Then again, these were the tiers from Dustloop (donāt know how old they are):
S: Testament, Eddie, Slayer
A: Baiken, Potemkin, Jam, May, Millia
B: Axl, A.B.A, Zappa, Robo-Ky, Order-Sol, Faust, Venom
C: Sol, Ky, Dizzy, Chipp, I-no
D: Anji, Bridget, Johnny
I thought Odin Sphere had overall positive reception. Never would have guessed that liking it would be an unpopular opinion.
Well from what Iāve heard in Accent Core nobody really counters Potemkinās weakness. Basically he is suppose to be very strong but however he is very slow moving and slow reacting. Because of this he has a strong advantage over certain characters, however like most other characters in these types of games supposedly their are suppose to be people who are bad match-ups against him. However in Accent Core such a thing doesnāt really exist as people who are suppose to be bad match-ups for him really arenāt.
With Odin Sphere I see it much like Twlight Princess. Critically acclaimed, high user scores, see it listed in many āBest RPGās of the PS2 Generationā lists (in case of TP I guess Wii games lists) but talking about the game in general people seem to dislike it. But thinking it over you could say similar things to a lot of games (case in point Final Fantasy XII or Final Fantasy X).
Oh yeah I have some new things to add to my unpopular opinions:
-
I thought Twilght Princess is one of the greatest Zelda game of all-time
-
I hated Final Fantasy XII
-
I think that Conkerās Bad Fur Day is RAREās best game ever
-
The Banjo games are better then Mario 64 (IMO)
-
I donāt think that Ocarina of Time or Resident Evil 4 are the best games of all-time
-
From my experiences I never really thought that the Mega-drive was as good as the SNES (though I still have a fair share amount of games to play on both platforms)
-
Thought that Metal Gear Solid 2 was better then the first MGS and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (up until I played MGS3: Subsistence)
Iāll explain this one. The Tales team just keeps FAILING hardcore with every game they produce. They produce so much games with trying to reinvent the formulas but they NEVER quite get it. Lets see. Well Tales of Destiny 1, 2, Eternia were supposedly great games. I donāt doubt that as they were some of the first, but as they started churning them out on a regular basis, the worst it got.
Tales of Rebirth - I liked this game, the cooking system (by now, theyāve mastered crafting at least) was pretty good and you could make good items. You could also upgrade your gear using skill points instead of buying new gear. The characters were very much likeable, but the story was very shallow. Something goes wrong in the world, main characterās sister gets abducted and he goes on a rampage trying to find his sister. Iāll give it credit where its due though, I loved the battle system, music and the graphics. Pretty much this game was better than every Tales game thats ever been released and this game hasnāt even been released in the US yet. Pathetic.
Tales of Legendia - For some ungodly reason, they brought back the original and dated 2d fighting system, so that meant the battle system was extremely shallow. This was released after Rebirth so I expected a lot more than this. One of the main improvements in this game was the travel system, to where you can teleport to areas youāve already been. Other than that, very shallow storyline, battle system, etc. I liked the music though, music doesnāt disappoint.
Tales of the Abyss - For once it seemed like they got it right. WRONG! The field map was extremely buggy and low framerate. It was mind boggling how they could make a game run at 60fps or damn near it, but not match with the world map. For all the advancements they made, they took a step back. The story was confusing (about the fonons and shit, it all sounded ridiculous by the time I was almost done with it). The battle system was what I was always waiting for. A full 3d system, but even to this day, they still havenāt learned to do a 3d system worth playing. It all comes back to the JRPG syndrome. Attack attack attack. Not only that but the mechanics are way off. Why in the hell does it have to ācenterā itself before I made an attack in full 3d? Why is it that I have to be in-line before I can make a successful attack? I thought that was the point of it being 3d? Whatever. Shit sucks.
Tales of the World - Again, looked like they put the pieces of what makes Tales great, but looked more like a cut-and-paste job to me. They introduced character classes and while that sounded fucking awesome, it wasnt. Because again with the JRPG syndrome, the melee is overpowered and there is NO REASON to run a Priest. Priest was utterly useless and became just another melee attacker b/c everything else sucks so bad you canāt do any damage. Top that off with the inferior 3d engine to where its not even 3d and you have a recipe for disaster. I liked the crafting in this game though as its more like crafting from MMO. You go out and farm and you make items, simple enough. They upgraded cooking in that regard too.
On top of it all, every Tales game has just about every Japanese anime cliche you can think of. That in itself is terrible. Reason why I liked Rebirth (and Legendiaās) main characters, Veigue and Senel was that they were portrayed as the shit, and they were. Not once they showed a weak side to them, and they didnāt look like boys that were out to save the world. Coincidentally, both of them are out to save their sister, but nonetheless they were badass.
In the sense of advancing the RPG genre in general, theyāve covered very little ground. They keep adding features I like, but they look more like a feature-in progress and they miss key ingredients to make it truly shine. Granted they covered more ground than any other JRPG, but 1 American RPG dwarfs every Tales games out there, and they would be smart to learn from us.
Thatās true, in a sense. Oblivion doesnāt explicitly punish you for choosing the āwrong sideā in a quest where that can happen, it just sometimes changes the reward you get.
The flipside is you can become a scofflaw, but youāll have to deal with the gameās legal system, at least until you get an item that cloaks your identity. And in the unmodded game, that means dealing with psychic guards, and sometimes getting a bounty for doing things that shouldnāt be illegal (was looking at a shopās items that were out on display, and wanted to see what a book was that was UNDER another, so I did the logical thing and tried to move the one above it⦠the store owner went beserk and called the guards. So I got a 40 GP bounty for theft⦠and I never tried to POCKET anything!).
Of course, itās also fun to find ways to get guards killed so you can loot their armorā¦
By now, you shouldāve realized I like the game, even with my dislike of āregularā jrpgsā¦
Well, for me Windwaker is the best zelda game so far. Just cause I havenāt really played Twilight Princess yet, even though, I can play it any time since my little bros have it on the cube.
I donāt think RE:4 is the best game of all time but it definitely is the best RE yet. I can only hope RE5 surpasses it.
I actually enjoyed FFXII. This coming from someone who thought would never get back into RPGs again. Iām currently waiting on FFXIII before getting a ps3.
I REALLY donāt like GTA. Just doesnāt ever āclickā with me. I mean yea you can do a lot of things but even that gets old and the gameplay seems to be the same on all of them.
-Iām not even excited for E3 this yearā¦even though there are all these new games coming down the road I just fell bombarded by news regularly.
-Ps3 DMC4 plays and looks better than the 360 counterpart IMO.Not to say the 360 version looks terrible, but as one of the 1st games i did a side by side comparison of,ps3 seems better. It really shouldāve stayed exclusive in hindsight.
-I prefer the XMB to Dashboard Blades tooā¦I just wish i could combine the functionality of the 360 with the look of the ps3.
-Collecting arbitrary things in games(Iām looking at you platformers) is a pain in the ass.Unless itās actually changing the way Iāll be playing the game in a major way Iām all set.Itās a real shitty way to try and pump up replay value.
- I would pay money for the Monkey Island games on DS.Itās not an unpopular opinionā¦but itās not exactly mainstream either ā¦GET OFF MY BACK .
-
Assassinās Creed isnāt nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Sure, the combat was a bit repetitive but, the exploration and platforming elements were well done.
-
Chronicles of Riddick: EFBB, and Bioshock are the two best FPSes to be released recently.
-
The Timesplitters series has more enjoyable multiplayer than the Halo series.
-
Final Fantasy 9, 6, and 4, are the best in the series.
-
Most of Squaresoftās side projects are far better than the Final Fantasy series. (Einhander, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, etc.)
-
The Klonoa games are very underrated platformers.
-
Oblivion is far inferior to its predecessor Morrowind.
-
Wind Waker is better than Twilight Princess.
-
Nintendo needs to start making Donkey Kong platform games again instead of those bongo rhythm games.
I will agree that the dungeon design in Wind Waker was good, and battle with Ganondorf was awesome. But there needed to be more dungeons, less sailing, and no Triforce hunt.
Donky Kong: Jungle Beat was awesome. And I totally agree we need a new regular platformer though.
^
Yeah, WW was a bit too short but it was great while it lasted. I agree the Triforce hunt was pretty tedious/boring. The only problem I have with sailing is that there wasnāt enough things to do, there should have been more islands or ships on the world map to visit or more enemies to fight.
Oh yeah, and I think MS wasted their money buying Rare. What have you done for me lately? as the song(Janet Jackson?) says. Letās seeā¦Perfect Dark and Conkerās Bad Fur Day on regular Xbox, which was a prettier remake of an N64 game(*and thank God for that since N64 games were just hideous 99% of the time), and the ultimately forgettable Kameo(*Iād probably get it if I ever saw it for 5 bucks or lessā¦but just for some achievementsā¦). Perfect Dark was a goddamn jokeā¦I was laughing at the game the first time I played it on a friendās 360. āRare is going to have to come better than thatā¦this looks so half-assā¦not even half ass itās a quarter-assā¦ā
*those old point-and-click games like Myst and āDāā¦Garbage. Well, at least āDā was funny, kinda like how I find Shenmue or any MST3k movie funny.
Star Ocean 3 is the greatest 3-D Action RPG of all time.
Thatās because theyāre structured like western RPGs.
I just think most of the gameās design and implement is too weak to hold it up. Combat in particular seems very weak.
Back to the topic, I think Sparkster (Rocket Knight Adventures 2) is one of the best platform games, above the Sonic and Mario series.
Wait, is the slowdown just in the US version? Or in the PAL version as well? I loved the game but the slowdown was really annoying.
Oh yeah, God Hand is a great game. Everyone should get up on that.
Well shit, I guess I donāt have to explain myself anymore
Anyway Iāll just quote this:
LOL at people trying to say Tales games are bad. Abyssās story for the record wasnāt that hard to understand and had some really good elements.
90% of the time Tales games stomp the fuck out of FF games, in my opinion.
I donāt like the Tales games because the battling is kind of boring and simple.
Eternia (this is ToD2 NA right?) was decent but everything else blew. Havenāt played Rebirth but heard good things.
EDIT: About the cliche, I donāt think the cliche itself is inherently bad (depends on the narrative). However, the writing in Tales is not particularly good, which hurts the story overall.
I dislike shooting games very much.
I love FF games, all of them from 7 on. 6 wasnāt that great.
I actually like EAās games. I especially liked the EA Big series of games. The first NBA Street, and all of the SSX games were fantastic.
I love the way SF4 looks.
Thank you.
And I like Tales games for a lot of reasons, but the fighting is one of the big draws for me. I love the real time battle systems, and the Tales games have a better one than Star Ocean (from Symphonia on, anyway), which I also really like.
Yeah the slowdown is in the North American version, not too sure about the Japanese. The PAL version contains no slowdown at all from what Iāve heard. And if you own a 60GB PS3 it fixes the slowdown of the North American version.
Glad to see that somebody else in the game liked it besides me.
Slighly Off-Topic: Iām really curious about Oboro Muramasa Youtoden since weāve heard no word on that since what itās announcement?
As for God Hand Iāve heard great things about it, thinking of trying it.
