I’ve actually been seeking a working rom of NFL Street 2. Shit was amazing. EA did a lot of things right when EA BIG was still a department. SSX Tricky is my personal favorite but NOTHING beats jumping off a wall to catch a TD pass…
I was at an arcade the other playing NBA Jam against a friend and the score was 53-51. His computer player steals the ball and sprints across court. I chase and as he goes for a dunk something miraculous happened… I blocked it. You never see that happen in “realistic,” games anymore and you never get the sense that it’s even possible.
Also, is FUSE a carbon-copy of Borderlands but with less character and less entertainment?

TL;DR: Arcade sports games > Sports sims…
Co-op is way better-integrated and more playable in Sonic 3, which makes it the only one I’d go back to, since Sonic is too simplistic to play alone. I was waiting for a table at a restaurant last week which happened to be next door to a beercade. There was an SNES and a Genesis at the bar, and my friends were hogging the SNES so I got stuck with Sonic 2. I paid for my beer and drank it with one hand while beating the first two levels with the other. Just hold right till you see the end of the level, occasionally tap down to roll through enemies, and jump in between sips…no problem.
Of course, that’s what happens when you design an entire game just to show that your console can scroll screens faster than the competition.
Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine is really hard and I love it.
I like the controls but I agree that story and characters are somewhat bland in the games imo. Apparently, the books aren’t bad. I think it’s like Halo or Star Wars, where the extended Universe is actually quite interesting. Gears is like Marvel in the fact that the game’s hitboxes are wonky and stuff that should kill you won’t and stuff that shouldn’t kill you will.
I can’t quite put my finger on what it is. Sonic 3 is definitely among the “pretty good” entries in the series. I owned a Genesis when it came out and everything. It just didn’t grab me.
Smackdown 1 maybe but Smackdown 2 is still a tight game. Maybe it’s nostalgia, but I still like 2 better than any of the other Smackdown games I played. Best wrestling game ever imo.
Metroid Prime Pinball. AWESOME awesome game! I’m sure making pinball into a quest was done before but I can’t think of who did it and it was fun as hell, that game.
Metroid Prime Hunters on the DS was a great game too. If I could play FPS games on a touch screen I’d probably play more of them. I think D-pad+Touch Screen/stylus is the optimal way to play a FPS game. Control is a lot more intuitive and can likely be a lot more sensitive.
Kirby’s Pinball Land and Sonic Spinball. The latter brought back boring memories of Sonic 2 casino zone, but the Kirby game was pretty fun - it retained the “steal badguys power” mechanic, which kept a lot of variety i the mix. Good travel game.
The nuts and bolts game play of the genesis Sonic’s are very basic, but if you think that makes them simple then you have no comprehension of game design. You’re missing the forest for the trees, as a lot of of attention to detail went into enemy placement, art style, music, level progression, etc to create a specific mood and gaming experience for the user. Platformers are by far my favorite genre and generally I like them to be difficult and test my skills, but with that being said Sonic 2, 3, and S&K are my top 3 favorite games ever and have more lasting appeal than anything I’ve ever played.
Anyways back on topic: Kid Icarus: Uprising controls are fine.

stopped reading there
sonic heroes was ass, sonic cd is bad, shadow the hedgehog was just an interactive OST to me, sonic 06 never existed literally, anyone that tries to defend it has no soul
Mood alone doesn’t make a game. Most 2D platformers are simple, but you still need 2 hands to play and can’t just hold right till you get to the end of the level. Sonic’s music and visuals are nostalgic and memorable and I liked them as a kid, but in terms of gameplay (which is what games are about) there are many superior games even on Genesis - from CV Bloodlines and Wily Wars to Ristar and Sparkster.
