As for participation, these are the schools being personally invited by UCB:
SJSU [please please make it this year]
UCDavis [as always]
SFSU [maybe not for GGXX–sorry guys]
I’m still trying to work out time constraints and the number of schools that can participate. As usual, this post will be constantly updated as new details come up.
Edit:
Date is definitely set to Oct. 16th. Didn’t want to push it back too far, in fear that it might coincide with midterms/exams. Also, the Fall UBs have generally fallen around this date.
i guess when i say ‘allow switching in 2/3’ that means everyone has to choose the first choice before the UB begins. when he/she (HAH) loses, he can then switch characters.
in a best of 1 instance, it seems as long as people choose the teams BLIND prior to the match, altering teams WITHIN school vs. school also seem logical.
comments?
opera: we can have initial d tourney. it’ll be like, 2 people. best out of 100.
Let’s do some of the longer games (uh… prolly just CVS2) team-tourney style where the schools go round robin. Actually I’m not sure if that would take longer or not, but it’s a decent change.
Or
Maybe do something where instead of having the traditional univ battle format, we have each school submit two teams of max size three and then just put those teams into a single-elim team tourney. CVS2 normally has four schools, so this will fit perfectly into an 8 team bracket. Schools don’t HAVE to have three people, but having 2 teams/school will allow a greater range of players (maybe there’s an ok player that’s REALLY dedicated to the game, but is just not good enough to make it into the top4 OR there’s a player that is pretty much a regular at the arcade, but is not an actual student). This gives those players a chance at being part of the event. This might enforce some extra thought into the actual creation of a team as well (do you want the three best players on one team? or would you rather distribute evenly?).
Just tossing out new ideas… Team tournies are pretty fun, but there are never enough people around to hold them. A lot of people come out for univ battle so maybe we can just put some sort of team tourney to replace one of two of the traditional univ battle matchups.
i like keiths idea, it allows me to be a part of team ggxx so i can get bite x 0391047107128 by LB, and it allows me to be part of team cvs2 so i can rape keiths maki as always.
Date sounds ok to me, but we have this new guy from HK that’s pretty good with Eddie and I hear he wants to play at UB. I know GGXX isn’t a strong game for us, but it would be cool if we could still compete in it, especially since we have some new blood around.
damn…jesse tried to set some shit up at riverside, it blew up…=( hahahaha we need a super organized person to do this, how do you usually do this shit chicken?
haha, that’s EXACTLY what I had in mind.
people like the leeeeeeeeezy, ricky, etc…
if people complain that it’s unfair to add a top player to a school-team because they aren’t students, you can simply limit them to just one of the games or something. however i DO believe that being a regular is still a pre-req for qualification onto a school team.
this probably sounds like a cheap trick to get someone like Ricky onto the bearcade team, but it honestly isn’t. i don’t care as much for winning as I do for the event to be a little more exciting. give proven regulars a chance to enter and have some fun too.
leeeeeezy: go to bearcade more i need more practice playing k vs k. sucks i had to start work right when you and ricky started playing :*(
venkat: stfu and stop taking sides with me. it just makes my argument seem worse.
he’s exciting to play against in general (he forces you to play at the top of your game), and he’s exciting to watch when he’s playing against another good player (choi, payaso, leezy, zim, etc…). imo, turtling doesn’t make a match shitty if the match is played well. i’ve noticed that excessive turtling makes match VIDS pretty boring, but not really when you’re watching the match live.
i mean if people really have problems with someone like ricky entering then it’s not like he has to anyway. i doubt he’d care much either way. i was just using him as an example as to how this can be open up to a wider range of people. i’d prolly try to get byron to be on the team too even though he’s not godtier. same thing with people like joe-galzpanic-tetrisplayer.
like i said before, i’m just tryin to get a bit of change to the event. teams end up being pretty much the same every sem if the regulars aren’t graduating, and the event loses a bit of freshness if you can already anticipate months before how lineups are prolly gonna be.
To be honest I don’t really mind if top players get in or not. I mean as long as rules are made to prevent crazy B.S. from happeneing; i.e.) Ricky, Choi, Lee, and other Choi all on the same team.
keith: no, i know playing top tier match is fun. i’m the ONLY one (out of 6 people who i’ve talked to right after watching sbo2 finals) that found mago’s matches exciting. now, those were between TWO top tier players.
there is a chance john choi won’t make it, and having ricky on the team = pretty much one-sided rape. and THAT is not fun to watch. again, this is UB, not sbo2 or someshit where god tiers come out of no where left and right and provide fuckciting matches for hours on end. no.
i don’t know… i’m sure other schools will enjoy playing against ricky since they don’t really get a chance to play him a lot. i’m very sure that other players in berkeley (me included) will love to play against john choi even if it’s best of one during university battle.
i don’t know.
anyways, i vote for byron to be in berkeley’s team. he is probably the most regular out of everyone in berkeley.
Well like I said, I was simply using Ricky as an example since he plays at Bearcade a lot and isn’t a student but is a top player. It doesn’t really matter to me whether or not he’s actually placed on our team in the end. I just wanna see some different faces participating in the event.
Also, having Ricky isn’t necessarily a one-sided rape. I don’t think there is anyone on the Bearcade team who has gone undefeated in every game, every semester they’ve participated. I don’t really follow 3s/ggxx, but I remember zim losing to both wil and payaso when they played during univ battle. Eric being our best player and losing to other best players (and 2nd best players) shows that adding in Ricky may not prove to be so one-sided. Remember that I’m talking about the team-tourney system (so it wouldn’t be like Ricky racks up 4 free wins in the round robin system). Most schools have a good chance at making it to the other school’s last char for each team.
Really the only way I can see this as being a guaranteed one-sided rape would be to put people like Ricky/Leezy/Choi as the first player in each of their respective teams so that they would just beat everyone and no other teammates would even have to play at all. I seriously doubt that’s gonna happen though.
I guess another argument would be that adding in someone like Ricky would almost guarantee win in nearly all the games. Solution to that would be to simply limit the number of games non-students are allowed to participate in. Just give Ricky/Leezy/whoever 1 game to enter and let them choose.
Just curious, but are a lot of the players generally concerned with winning the actual univ battle event? Personally, I want to win all of my own matches, and I root for the bearcade in all the other games, but in the end I really don’t care who was the overall winner and whatnot. Maybe that’s why I’m so nonchalant about this new idea. I know adding someone like Ricky would greatly increase bearcade’s chance of winning any of the games, but I’m not really thinking of it in that way. It’s more like getting a chance to see Ricky vs other top players from other arcades and seeing how they do, or giving other players a chance to make the team and just hang out with the group for the event. Stuff like that prolly builds more regulars too.
SJSU should be able to make it this semester. Its my last semester along with some other fellow gamers, and we’d like to participate in one final University Battle. Theres also a new breed of gamers here that can hopefully carry this tradition on for SJSU for future University Battles. Thanks for re-inviting us even though we didnt show up last time. I’ll make every effort on my part that we fully represent all games being offered this time around
