Undoing YEARS of pad. Stick Conversion Thread

The Hori fightsticks are meh. That TE is something serious.

It took me several months to get solid with stick. Even now I feel I have some room for improvement but I can comfortably do anything I used to.

I just had to use stick because my execution on pad from the 2p side was questionable sometimes (EWGF for example). I also wasn’t comfy with the default configuration on SF games and the time it took to reconfigure was annoying.

i still play console 3s on a pad…but i can rock with the stick for arcade 3s.

and its all due to constant practice. With the arcade release of sf4 learning to play on a jap stick was a must so u just have to put in the time. Especially since a trip to japan is inevitable

You just gotta do it. you cant get mad when losing to someone you know u would beat if you had a pad also. just fight through it and get comfortable on a stick.

After I got 3rd for 3rd strike at evo east I remember throwing that pad in the trash after losing to Justin and Exodus

Man cannot live on pad alone

Appreciate it bro. I’m getting better physically and mentally. Even resisted the urge to plug in OG PS1 pad after “those losses”. Hell, playing stick now. It’s like a second job lol. Yea I knew I had to get with the times and get a jap stick. In my wildest fantasy if I won a trip to Japan and walked in one of the many arcades with pad in hand, they’d probably lock my black ass up.

You got 3rd at Evo East on pad? And then threw it away? Or stick and then threw pad away. Also, it was a guy who placed at Evo 2008 in Marvel, with pad.

Props to Jblair for godlike conversion. Guess you’re just a natural. Lol.

I was such a pad scrub back then i didnt even own a stick…until Snaaaake made me a good Happ p360

glad to see your sticking with it though. dont give up, the reward is worth it. I like how i can play on both though.

But for alpha 2, the EX series and 3rd strike…it’s still all pad.

Pad habits die hard

I took me close to a year to be very good with my Tekken characters. Having played on a pad for nearly 10 years, the transition within that year was a pain in the ass. I played a few 2D fighters here and there (SFA3, CvsS2) but SF4 was the game that had me learn the hard way. It also converted me to playing mostly charge characters now. But my first stick was the HRAPS3 which I think is a great entry level stick to start on (Which I’m now upgraded to the SFIV TE stick). Even swapped out the buttons to Sanwa types. All’n all, today it’s all about arcade sticks (Over two years now). I can’t even play on a pad anymore. Not as ruthless as I can be with a stick. Still, there is much to learn with my 2D fighters. Up next in my arsenal is BlazBlue. Having never really gone into Guilty Gear in the past, this will truly be a test of my lack of 2D gaming. And I’m looking very much forward to it.

This.

This is why people should have an arcade pedigree.

A while back somebody made a really good post that had all the different types of grips and videos of people using them.

I was having trouble learning stick, when I realized that gripping it from the top instead of the side made everything much much easier for me.

In b4 masturbation jokes. ^

man, I’ve been a pad warrior for a long time now and never had a problem till SF4 came out. I’m sorry man, but FADC ultra with ryu on both P1 and P2 side just isn’t consistent on a pad. I HAD TO SWITCH!!! weird though, ryu such a simple character yet such a pain to use…

A stick is just soo much more fluid than a pad. I just recently went cold turkey and stopped using the pad all together. TRUST me when i tell you that it is the better choice. the transition is tough but i can already tell the difference in execution.

My main problems with the stick is just conditioning myself to remember where and what buttons to press when i’m playing.

stick with it…
