UMVC3 Super Team Battle Opera Ultra Mode!

I’ve had this idea rolling around in my head for a little while and just wanted to see what other peeps think of it…

What if there were set teams for the game and a mode where you had to pick one of these teams with 3 fixed characters?

I used to play Pro Evo Soccer a bit online and I used to enjoy looking at the weaker teams and messing around with their line ups and formations to try to get them to their maximum potential. UMVC3 is a game where team dynamics and synergy are really important too and so it would be interesting (to me anyway) if there were fixed character teams and you had to tinker with them to get the most out of them. As with football teams, you can’t just put all the best players on one team and you have to figure out how to play to the teams strengths and how to cover it’s weaknesses.

I’ve tried to seperate the cast into teams based on their affiliations (respect the lore!) or their characteristics. All teams are purely Marvel or Capcom and some are obvious whilst some of the connections are a bit tenuous. Also there is one too many on each side so they’ve been left out :frowning: (The teams are ordered in terms of how strong I think the character connections are e.g. team Darkstalkers is one of the most coherent teams)

Capcom

Darkstalkers - Morrigan, Felicia, Hsien Ko
DMC - Dante, Vergil, Trish
Members of STARS - Chris, Jill, Wesker
Street Fighters - Ryu, Chun, C. Viper
Capcom Classics - Strider, Spencer, Arthur
New Heroes - V. Joe, Frank, Amaterasu
Demons and Monsters - Akuma, Nemesis, Firebrand
I am the law! - Phoenix Wright, Haggar, Zero

Tron = not picked

Marvel

Avengers - Captain America, Iron Man, Thor
X Men - Storm, Wolverine, X 23
X Men Villains - Magneto, Sentinel, Phoenix
Magic and Sorcery - Dr Strange, Dormamu, Shuma
Dastardly Villains - Dr Doom, Modok, Taskmaster
Clobbering time - Hulk She Hulk, Skrull
Vigilante Justice - Spiderman, Deadpool, Hawkeye
Renegade Heroes - Ghost Rider, Nova, Iron Fist

Rocket Raccoon = not picked

Thoughts:

  • I know there could be a lot if discussion on most of these teams as to whether they are matched correctly (especially on the Marvel side where it’s pretty subjective. I’m not the most knowledgeable in terms of the lore so if I’ve missed any obvious connections let me know.
  • The teams turned out pretty funky, funkier than I would have imagined. Most of these teams would require really interesting strategies to make them work. I can’t see many OP teams…
  • except DMC. That team looks like the stand out No.1.
‘Magic and Sorcery’ and ‘Dastardly Villains’ look strong too.
  • This is more of a thought experiment than anything else. I’m not involved in any scene and I don’t expect anyone to take this seriously, just something to think about and maybe discuss.
  • I would really like this to be included in any future team games though and for there to be stories like in SFXT and maybe (maybe) unique character interactions/moves.

It would be cool to know what anyone thinks. I knocked this out quickly this afternoon so hopefully it makes some kind of sense!

What teams should there be?
What teams are strong/weak?
What teams are interesting or have potentially interesting stratgey?
Does anybody play a team like this and how do you make it work?
etc,etc…

Cheers

Fix “Magic and Sorcery” to “Team Strange Tales.” Strange, Dorm and Shuma all come from the same comic.

I’ve been playing the team for fun and in pre-tourney casuals to hide my hand, and I think it’s pretty alright. Shuma can hard tag into FOF loops so the meterless damage is pretty strong, and he actually works pretty well with Bolts. Dorm/Strange are an established pair that allow Dorm to start offense from full-screen. He also works great with Mystic Ray so that’s another option. Either way I think the best order is Shuma a/Dorm a/Strange y. I’ve never seen anyone run it, maybe I’ll try and get some recorded sets in to show how it works.

Here’s videos of some of these teams in action, or just combo vids.

Darkstalkers:

DMC:

Street Fighter (Akuma instead of Viper, by far the better team fwiw):

Avengers (as Cap/Thor/Hawkeye, the Avengers are too widespread to really limit them):

Honestly, I think this is a cool thought experiment but you might as well allow a little more freedom than restricting the teams all to one fixed set. Maybe instead of doing things like “Demons and Sorcery” you could have more concrete options for established lore. Wesker/Chris/Nemesis could be another option for Team RE. Team SF and Team Avengers have a few different characters they could run as well. Plus, if you are gonna go for theme-based instead of lore-based, it’d make more sense to have crossovers between Marvel and Capcom; that’s part of the fun of this game, right? So for example She-Hulk/PW/Haggar could be an option for the Law team.

Oh also, might as well put Nova/RR/Skrull as Team Guardians of the Galaxy or whatever, they all more or less appear in the same comic.

Why do you need an entire mode for this when you can just manually select “themed” teams?

Team DMC and X-men Villains are the top tier teams here.

Dastardly Villains is meh. That team has no anchor but lots of resources.

Team Strange is ok.

New Heroes looks weird but also looks like it could hold some synergy.

Other teams could do well just because of one character. Eg: Team X-men(Wolverine) or Team I am law(Zero).

How about Tron instead of Phoenix Wright, eh?

swap deadpool for Nova

Ah replies…

First off, thanks for the vids, much appreciated. The SF team one was good (I’ve heard of that guy before but not seen his play). Obviously Akuma fits as well but I felt justifed in having Akuma or Viper and Viper seemed the more ‘interesting’ option. Strange Tales is a better name and would be a really cool team to see at high level - Angelic’s Dorm/Shuma play is obviously god like but then how do you fit Strange in? Dorm, Strange, Shuma maybe?

However, no switching characters, no flexibility! Once the teams are set you have to make the best out of what you’ve got. Also I think if you cross characters from Marvel and Capcom trying to put them into coherent teams becomes too complicated (just my opinion but the main thing is that each team has 3 set characters)

Nova/RR/Skrull makes more sense than how I’ve got them actually! I’ll have to think about that…

Because people can manually select non-themed teams too. If both players are on the same page, then, yeah, it makes no difference if they are both picking from an agreed list of teams. If there was a specific game mode (in future games), then you could have more meaningful teams with a story behind them (a la SFXT) and you could tailored dialogue and (because both sides would have a set team) they could have special double team moves or abilities - I reckon that would be pretty cool.

Looking at it again, 'X Men Villains would be pretty strong. You got Mags + Drones with the potential for infinites and Phoenix in the back.

‘Dastardly Villains’ would be a solid zoning team with high damage potential and you get Doom anchor - we’ve all seen that enough to know that it’s workable.

‘New Heroes’ is like Kusoru’s team without log trap confirms but you do get a better all round anchor - can Frank level up off V. Joe though?

I just saw Phoenix Wright with Haggar as they’re both Law and Order types. As that’s the last team, I was kind of clutching at straws at that point! I’d like to hear iideas for how to fit Tron on to a team though…

Good shout… maybe!

Sorry for the huge post and sorry for some of the awful team names. I wrote the OP in hurry so it was just a stream of consciousness.

Put Haggar on Capcom Classics, then put Zero, Tron, and Spencer on “Team Robot”

Yeah, it runs backwards from Angelic’s playstyle since Shuma is on point. I feel like he’s the worst character to put 2nd or 3rd on this team (unsafe DHC’s in, works best with assists). There are some cases where I’d run Dorm on point but in general I think Shuma first is the best order. Either way the damage is off the charts and any combination plays decent from range. Incoming is kinda sad, though. I’m hoping to get some capture equipment, at which point I’ll shoot a team synergy vid for this team.
