On that note, why is it so hard to grab Strider when he does Wall Cling? It feels like it has to be frame perfect, too early and I’m in the wrong direction, too late and I’m already in blockstun.
My entire concept of anti airs in that involves me crouching with chun to a delayed forward parry. I love her hurtboxes. Also jab
I’m sad 3SO doesn’t have the original HUDs. Not because i hate the new ones, but just because it feels weird.
I’m on now.
Some one 3S or SF4 me.
scary
Holy shit that is scary to look at.
[details=Spoiler]Here is the write up I promised everyone. I am basically copy/pasting this from my Facebook page with some edits to take out personal info, hopefully it all reads OK.
EVO was one of (if not the best) weekends of my life. There were some bad times, such as setting my alarm wrong and missing my 8 am Marvel pools. I’ll order a wake up call at my next major if I have early pools. I mean it was ass I missed my pools but I try and take bad things as a learning experience.
With that though, it was nothing but good times. Here is what I did:
-Day 1 my friend/roommate and I met Mike Ross and Gootecks. Mike is the nicest guy in the world, while Gootecks pretty much looked like he was either high out of his mind or REALLY didn’t want to be there. Basically what you would expect from Mike Ross and Gootecks.
-Played casuals with the talented Spencer/Iron Man/Doom player Danke. He showed me some really cool Iron Man tech including his infinite and a great air to air combo. Also he showed me that you can combo Repulsor Spread into Proton Canon anywhere on screen! You just have to input it really fast. This was like opening Pandora’s Box for me, I hit people with Spread midscreen all the time but never had any real way to follow up with it. Now I do!
-Did OK in my SF4 pools. Lost against a Bison that obviously knew the matchup better than I did. Beat a Ken that didn’t know how to anti-air or tech throws…if you don’t know how to do either of those against Blanka, you’re dead. Lost against a Blanka. Blanka mirror matches are fucking stupid, it was really close though, and I picked up some knew tricks from him like making sweep REALLY meaty and being able to frame trap people off it. 1-2 in Pools overall.
-Went 1-2 in SFxT with my friend. We had Justin Wong round one but he was DQed after he didn’t show up after like 30 minutes or something. I really don’t know what happened with that. Lost the other two matches. I think this game shit and only played because my friend paid the entry fee for me. The guy I entered with really lacks any sort of footsies so it was a total crapshoot and the worst part of the whole tournament. I really wish I had missed SFxT pools instead of Marvel pools. Ugh. My partner’s phone call is actually what woke me up after missing my alarm.
-Spent a significant portion of both days playing in the freeplay casuals area, trying to knock off the guy with the winstreak. Here is the funny thing about those stations. Basically, you have two back to back monitors with sticks and Triton Headsets (those headsets are really nice btw, thinking of getting one) where people play each other best 2 out of 3, winner stays. There were TWO SEPARATE LINES for Marvel and there should have only been one. People were basically trying to get behind the guy they thought was gonna lose. Meanwhile for SF4 there was ONE line and things moved much faster. Does this say something about the intelligence level of these two communities as a whole? I’ll let you decide.
-Speaking of the above incident, the dude stomping everyone into the dust was running Dormammu/Doom/Sentinel. I managed to ALMOST happy birthday both characters with a reversal THC Proton Cannon. If I knew what Danke had told me, anytime Iron Man gets a Reversal THC Proton Cannon, he can X-Factor cancel dash in, Repulsor Blast Spread xx Proton Cannon and kill both characters. Then I would have been able to position myself in the corner for an incoming character mixup. I really think all this new tech I picked up will make my Iron Man a lot better.
-Spent a significant portion of time playing SF4 freeplay casuals too, and when I would lose I’d ask the person questions about the matchup. A badass Vega player was on a 22 win streak or something crazy like that. It wasn’t Zeus, but he was really fucking good.
-Attended the Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 Panel. First and foremost, Nitsuma said no more new patches or updates. This IS the final version of UMvC3. A lot of people I talked to in the ballroom said that was bullshit and the rumor flying around Norcal is still they have a patch in the pipe for after EVO, but for now, learn those infinites. Nitsuma showed off some stuff that was cut from development like a “clash” system where if you did a hyper combo and the other guy did one too, they would “clash” and you would have to spend more meter to win the clash. They took it out because it was hard to balance, but to be honest it looked really stupid so I’m glad they did take it out. Cyclops was apparently also considered at one time, they showed a GIF of him super imposed onto the MvC3 training stage. Also apparently every characters magic series, launch, air series, spike, would have included a wall bounce. Nitsuma swore he didn’t steal this from any popular anime and got a lot of laughs (the drawings on the powerpoint looked JUST like DBZ).
-Spoke to many different people about a lot of different things. Everyone is super friendly and easy to talk to. The FGC rocks. I want to make another big post sometime/somewhere about how Kotaku can suck an entire Chaos Dimension worth of dicks about that stupid “The FGC is terrible and sexist” article they wrote awhile ago, but seriously, there were people there from all ethnic backgrounds, multiple countries, and plenty of women were competing. Everyone was nice and respectful of each other and really easy to talk to. So yeah, fuck off Kotaku.
-Adding to the above point, whenever I saw someone using my characters, I’d talked to them about what strategies they would use. A guy was running Haggar/Deadpool/Sentinel. Haggar and Deadpool seems to be a very popular pairing, Quick Work just does SO much for the mayor. Since the characters I play are kind of uncommon, I try to ask as many questions as possible.
Got my picture taken with Seth Killian, Choco and Momochi, and an Iron Man cosplayer.
-Saw a ton of cosplayers in general. Chun Li, Sakura, Ibuki, Iron Man, Deadpool, Phoenix, Rufus, Akuma, C Viper, Ryu and Link??? I seriously don’t know why there was a Link but there was. There was also a Mario. Why? I don’t really know.
-Played Sony All Stars Battle Royale. Game is super fun. Gonna get it when it comes out. Big Daddy’s level 3 seems way too good though since it lets you kill the other 3 players with no real effort. I was playing Kratos but I hope Cole makes it in the final build (I think its leaked confirmed he is).
-Played an indie game called Super Combo Man. If you like side scrolling beat em ups and action games like DMC/God of War, this is the game for you. Its a side scrolling beat em up/platformer where you move through stages and beat up bad guys, using light, medium, launcher, OTG, and super attacks. Really intuitive controls and a blast to play. Its currently set to release on Steam, PSN, XBLA, Android and iPhone devices. I told him he should think about putting it on the 3DS and Vita though, it seems perfect for those platforms.
-A guy passed out in the BYOC area. Either he had a seizure or was super drunk. I don’t know. Staff and medical workers had to pull him out of the ballroom.
-Nitsuma sat close to me during quarter finals for Marvel Saturday night. It looked like he was taking notes and I heard him say “lighting loops”. Get those tinfoil hats ready guys.
-Went to the “Assist Me” panel. They had a funny hangover type intro where Wesker, Doom, and X-23 couldn’t find Max because they got too drunk and then it ended with them running up the ballroom on screen and then actually entering the room. It was really well done. I asked Max what kind of dog Ammy was (apparently I asked what kind of “god” it was an he corrected me, got a few laughs for that one"), asked if he had plans for Iron Man and Morrigan (was gonna suggest Vampybitme to play Morrigan but forgot), and then told him he should learn the Krispy Kreme combo with Iron Man instead of the bad relaunch one he does. I got a signed poster from the members of the cast but it got screwed up on the flight home. I know Assist Me gets a lot of haters but you really need to look at it as entertainment and remember its intended to give novice players a starting point in addition to being a funny web series. Obviously you aren’t gonna learn any high level stuff from watching Assist Me, so just take it for what it as at face value: a funny web series.
-GRAND FINALS. SOOO HYPE! The matches were great. KoF was fantastic and although I don’t play the game the energy from the crowd was electric. KoF finals totally made up for the snooze fest that was SFxT and MK finals (GOD SO BORING, most people were checking their phones during the finals). Marvel finals were electric. You could hear the crowd’s excitement when Infrint’s Sentinel did j.M, j.M, air H Rocket Punch to finish Champ, and hear their heart’s collectively break when he failed to chip out Doom near the end of that one match.
-SF4 finals. Infiltration took it extremely convincingly versus every player he played. No contest on who deserved to win SF4 that year. That man knows his shit. Matches vs Daigo were super hype. Option selects everywhere. Level 8000 yomi.
-The hype for grand finals was through the fucking roof. Its such an experience. I really hope everyone makes it to at least EVO to watch Grand Finals. It may have been my favorite part of the entire weekend.
Also one last thing, I kind of realized playing Marvel casuals that I REALLY need to get my movement and incoming character mixups down, these things are among the footsies or fundamentals of Marvel and are super important. I’m going to practice those things with all my characters until I can do them flawlessly before I worry about learning other things.
So that’s everything I did at EVO! I’m sure I’m forgetting something somewhere. But for now, that’s everything I remember. An awesome weekend, and I’m still dead tired, but it was SO worth it. I really am going to do everything I can to go next year, and I hope everyone else does too![/details]
Create a 3S lobby. I’ll get on so i can embarrass myself. :3
