Only problem I have with this game is, it basically forgets both of its predecessors entirely. It basically spits on fans of the actual MvC series and appeals to the more modern Capcom or to a lesser degree, Marvel, fanbase.
This game is a sequel, and therefore, it should be a continuation of MvC1 and 2. I can understand eliminating many of the clone or joke characters but by removing a large part of the cast that Capcom deems “irrelevant” they are ignoring its roots.
Characters like Jin, Megaman, Captain Commando, Gambit & Venom were all part of the original MvC and its sequel. I understand the difficulties with Marvel, but what’s Capcom’s excuse?
X1 Sigma could work just fine as a moveset. His normal form would consist of his projectiles & saber, like he has in his X1 boss battle. You could also give him a couple of Velgauder attacks a la TvC Casshan, such as the flame breath and ice shots. As for his final form, his Level 3 could have you temporarily control it (like Ippatsuman’s L3 from TvC), allowing you access to his left and right hands as well as his projectiles.
The only other candidates I can think of for UMvC3 would be X4, X5, or X8.
I don’t really like the game to be honest, I play it because I want to like it but I always realise its not what I want from the series. The roster is bland and uninteresting I think, I’ll admit the capcom roster from MvC2 was bland also, but I just feel that the game lacks something, it’s all very predictable. Some Capcom characters I miss are Cammy, Anakaris, Ruby Heart, CapCom, Dhalsim, and for Marvel I miss Marrow, Cyclops, Psylocke, Cable, Gambit, juggernaut and Rogue. Juggernaut is the one character I wanted out of everyone, it was always amazing to see his huge sprite animating beautifully on early gen hardware that even though he wasn’t the most interesting character I just wanted to see him brought back in all his glory again. Can you imagine having him tower over everyone with an invincible hyper with super armour that just plows through everything? HEAD CRUSH!!! You know that would have been amazing. Damn Capcom why did you have to ruin Sentinel by making him a slow bulky character when you could have just chose Juggernaut instead (that was the choice, either Sentinel or Juggernaut according to Capcom)?
As someone who’s played Capcom Marvel fighters since CotA, though not at the tournament level I’d still definitely consider myself a fan:
After ten years, you’re not going to justify the cost of a new game with just old shit. And as for “a continuation of the rest of the versus series,” Ultimate has:
‘True’ returners from MVC1/2:
Ryu
Chun-Li
Akuma
Strider Hiryu
Morrigan
Felicia
Tron Bonne
Jill (we can debate this one, who cares)
Arthur (Assist)
Wolverine
Spider-Man
Hulk
Magneto
Storm
Sentinel
Shuma-Gorath
Iron Man
Captain America
Doctor Doom
Thor (assist in MVC1)
Returners from other Capcom versus fighters:
Viewtiful Joe (TvC)
Frank West (TvC)
Zero (TvC, SvC)
Firebrand (SvC)
Overall, this is a “returner” roster of 24/50, and includes some Marvel characters that were likely hard sells (Sentinel, Shuma-Gorath). As someone who comes from other sequel/pseudo-sequel roots where it’s a good day when you see six characters from the /entire rest of the series/ come back, “one less than half the roster is returners from previous Capcom versus fighters, after literally a decade of new properties” is absurdly generous. Some of the newbies (She-Hulk, Ghost Rider, etc) are even cameos upgraded to playable status!
There just isn’t the development time or money to put 80 characters in, and I don’t think Dante or Wright or Wesker are any /less/ deserving than Jin or CapCom.
Bring on MvC4 Capcom. If you want to copy paste all the MvC3 characters and add 30 more with all of the fan requests and slap a 4 on it, by all means do! Just get rid of X-Factor and bring back the stun system instead of hit stun scaling, that will do it.
You missed the entire point of my post. I never said each game should include all the characters from it’s predecessor and I welcome new inclusions to the cast over clone or filler characters. I’ll use Smash as an example (lol I know). All of its main cast is included in each of its sequels. Ness or the Earthbound Series in general has not been relevant in years, but he is relevant to the actual Smash game series itself and thus, warranted an inclusion in the third game instead of being replaced by a character from a more popular game series.
Jin, Captain Commando, Megaman all deserve spots since they are within the core of the series. I understand your point about Dante/Wesker, but they most certainly wouldn’t be taking the place of the huge marketable characters like those, but the 4th or 3rd reps of various series such as Nemesis or Vergil. I’m not even saying they should replace those characters, but they should include them down the road as DLC in the very least. They already have the movesets, so it wouldn’t be too much work for Capcom.
I understand the legal problems with trying to get Gambit, Psylocke, Cable or Venom. That’s a real shame because all four are in heavy demand and very popular within the series and outside the series.
**Marvel- **Ms. Marvel, Daredevil, Gambit, Psylocke, Venom
**Capcom- **Mega Man, Gene, M. Bison, Asura, Lord Raptor or Chuck Greene
(If cards disconfirm characters): Marvel- Gambit, Psylocke, Moon Knight, Venom, Cable (Yeah, yeah, I know the whiners about "Too many X-Men. But basically every cool Marvel character who’s not an X-Men is already a card)
**Capcom- **Mega Man .exe, M. Bison, Asura, ???
I sort of hope that the cards don’t disconfirm characters if we ever do get more characters. It basically wipes out every cool non- X-Men Marvel character & it completely ruins my Capcom wishlist. Hence, the question marks after Asura.
Marvel: Psylocke, Gambit, Daredevil, Blade
Capcom: Sonson, Roll, Nero, Leon I Know They Got 4 RE Characters But I Don’t Care Kennedy
In all honesty I don’t see any of my Capcom wishlist making it, though I would love Sonson. She was my favorite character in MvC2 along with Roll. I could see Daredevil since he has cameo appearances already. Blade is the same and he could be awesome with cool dialog when going against the RE crew, Dante, and Morrigan/Darkstalker crew. Gambit and Psylocke is pure fandom. They are 2 of my favorite X-Men and have been in previous games so I want them back.
Capcom:
Megaman X
Gene
Jin or CapCom(DLC)
Donovan or Talbain
Rival Schools character
Power Stone or Breath of Fire(specially)(DLC)
Marvel:
Gambit(not a personal choice, to appease old Mahvel fans)(DLC)
Venom(not a personal choice, to appease old Mahvel fans)
Ms.Marvel
Emma Frost
Namor
Thanos(DLC)
I’ve been desperately hoping that we would see at least four DLC characters or some notice that they’d be coming down the road, but nothing has happened. I was disappointed in UMvC3’s roster in particular even before Niitsuma mentioned that he wanted to do a full 20 character update to surpass MvC2 numbers. Marvel vs Capcom pits two iconic universes against each other and characters come from all corners of time and space for the most epic battles possible. The lack of classic veterans is disappointing on both sides, but it hurts most on the Marvel side since you can clearly see that this is nothing more than a commercial vessel for Avengers(Ugh, I liked them before, but Marvel is making me dislike them now). The Capcom side is solid with a ton of recognizable characters. The only holes are three veterans and a couple of niche franchises on the Capcom side.
Either way… there are more characters I’d add to the list for a total of 70, but it’d probably come down to a lukewarm eight character update in the sequel. Gambit, Venom, Megaman and Gene are really the big sellers left for Megaman edition and they are the only ones that could sell a smaller update…
Hmm, the balance is off I think, the roster is very predictable. RE (Chris, Jill, Wesker, Nemesis), DMC (Dante, Trish, Vergil), SF (Ryu, Chun-Li, Akuma). It’s boring, very bland and commercialised, same for the marvel roster. The only surprise is that megaman actually isn’t there. To be honest I’d rather capcom had just made MSH2 and let marvel push whatever they wanted to push to whoever they wanted to push it, it would have made a more interesting game and at least MvC as a franchise could have retained some purity down the line. Chances of mvc4 seem slim, it’s kind of disappointing to think that this garbage is what we’ll be left with.
Disagree completely. Every major Capcom franchise outside of Mega Man and for the sake of bringing up sales figures Onimusha and Monster Hunter are represented. Akuma and Ryu are the only two characters I’d classify as clones everyone else is pretty much unique. All 4 of the RE characters play completely differently and as for Mahvel all that’s really missing is some X-Men and a Spider villain, boo hoo. Characters like Trish, MODOK, and Rocket Raccoon seem out of place by name but in terms of gameplay are all very good unique choices to the cast.
I never said that the cast wasn’t varied, what I said was that it’s predictable, the Capcom cast especially. I mean, do we really need four characters from RE? This one is debatable but, do we really need Vergil? MvC3 is basically just a promotion tool for Marvel and Capcom IPs, we could have guessed more than 50% of the cast just off current trailers alone. More interesting, popular and relevant characters from the series got left out simply because they “don’t want to sell them right now.” While this is understandable, it doesn’t make a good cast (imo), it makes good business.
Like I say I would rather had MSH2, it would have gave Nitsuma and his team more experience, allowed Marvel to sell whoever they wanted to sell, and allowed them to be more creative in the system, such as adding things like XF or making it appeal more to casul gamers without MvC suffering because of it. Mvc3 is the worst in the series imho, it’s an anti climax to what should have been something much more. If Mvc4 ever happens at least they have an engine and models to work with, I’m all for recycling, but I don’t see it happening.
