if that’s the guy during 3s, then yes. He was horrible. In most sporting events that have play by play and color commentary you can pretty much say whatever you want since the player can’t hear it, only the people on TV can. In a situation like the one at EVO, Play by Play has very strict rules in most events.

1. Don’t do play by play using the players actual name (use their character’s name instead.) This is distracting (esspecially when playing someone from Japan that would be given a slight advantage since nobody is heckling him)

2. PLay by Play should be background noise, not OVERPOWERING noise. He practically had his lips on the mic, which in turn forced us to listen to him even if we didn’t want to. It distracted us from the match, and he was impossible to ignore.

3. Don’t fuckin’ directly insult the players during the match (even if it is jokingly). What if you say something really funny, and he starts laughing? I know you’re thinking “well, he could just ignore him” For my answer to that, see #2.

But enough of that, I have some suggestions now.

1. I really liked how GGXX was 3v3. After 3s this year, I think it’s safe to assume that making 3s 3v3 as well will do it alot of good.

2. I know it’s asking alot, but can we PLEASE try and get close to the strip this year? As for the whole “move back to Cali thing,” Enjoy your EVO West and STFU.

3. Naomi hardware is not the expensive anymore. For the love of God! Invest in some MVC2 Naomi game boards and a DC to Naomi controller converter (they do exist)

4. Sell out more! Get more money for Prizes and expenses.

BOO HOO at complaining about heat and smoke. Red Rock has AC up the ass (like 500 people in that conference room and you couldn’t feel anything resembling body heat) and if you went outside it was to go somewhere that had AC in it any ways. WTF are you gonna do at Vegas that doesn’t resemble gambling, finding a hooker, or going to club/show any ways? Go to Alaska with that shit.

The whole stick thing is an issue…well not for me. I have custom made Japanese stick that literally weighs like 3 pounds and can easily fit in a backpack with room to spare. A lot of the other guys there though were lugging around fucking amazingly huge MAS and custom American sticks. Like sticks that are barely under your eyesight when you sit down. Fucking ridiculous. There should be a special accomodation for those players so they don’t get their sticks stolen/have to look like a complete nerd walking to Panda Express with a fucking huge ass arcade stick next to them.

BTW HRAPs suck. Someone should make a boycott on those things. They all look the same and it’s too easy for someone to accidentally pick up yours and GGPO your stick. At least put your name on the stick or get some weird colors for the buttons so like 2 and 3 people aren’t running around asking “have you seen my HRAP”. Shit is lame. Japanese players aren’t used to home sticks so they must have just randomly bought some for the tournament. Every US player should really have a custom stick though. Spending money on an HRAP just to have to mod it with better parts is lame. Getting it stolen is lame. Start and select button fucking up finals is lame.

Hey, sounds like you made some very useful comments to improve next year’s EVO.
I pity the players that aren’t as cool as you.

Maybe there are some people that like to use the American sticks. I was playing casuals with one MAS and one HRAP and folks were switching sides or waiting because they couldn’t/didn’t want to use one stick or the other. I was OK with both but seemed to be the exception than the rule. To each his own.

The “stick check” idea has merits but from a liability standpoint, too impractical.

Don’t get me wrong. I think that this was the best run EVO yet and the Red Rock was a very nice hotel with great rooms, but I would rather save the money. I’ll always support the scene and got a nice room in the process, but if you have EVO in Cali, there are plenty of hotels that probably would be willing to host an event. If you go back to a college, you don’t have to plead with the players to stay at the host hotel. Yeah, it’s once a year but I used to go to other tournaments ‘cause I could afford it. Now everything and then some go into EVO (Vegas). It’s nice/fun while you’re there, but when you fly back home to reality, you realize you miss the Benjis’ that flew out of your pocket.

Simply put, Rockefellar was annoying.
He did the play by play, fine. But he seemed to be doing a frame by frame rather than just announcing. Then after that, he gave you a fuckin story about it.

He is the worst announcer ever. Street Fighter for the fucking blind. During any sporting event, they have play by play, but it’s not BROADCAST OVER THE FUCKING LOUD SPEAKER SYSTEM. It’s super distracting to both the players and the people watching…NOBODY COULD CONCENTRATE!

All right, guys. Enough about Rockefeller. Leave the poor guy alone, my goodness you guys are trying to crush his spirit or something.

Rockefeller is awesome. He does a great job, and, seriously, if you watch the FFA RanBats, he’s freakin’ hilarious. I didn’t like him much at first either, but the trickiest part is this: after watching a few RanBats, you really detect how well he fits in and how he plays his part for that particular community. All of the players know him, and he knows all the players. And they all have a certain type of relationship with each other very unique to Family Fun. And so they end up playing off of each other very well.

What happened at Evo Finals was unfair for poor Rockefeller. He was taken largely out of his comfort zone by the fact that most of the Family Fun guys got eliminated and the only people left were Japanese. Also, the Nitto/Nuki controversy seemed to sap a lot of “strength” from him, understandably so. And last, but not least, Evo Staff did ask him to tone down his brand of humor.

Everyone at Evo West had a blast for Third Strike. He seriously had the audience in stitches for the most part. But it was because Evo West was pretty much another Family Fun RanBat. Only Peter Yoon was someone he didn’t know, but he played that off very well. And, again, most people who haven’t heard him before don’t realize how well he knows all of the FFA people, so his comments aren’t hurtful, scathing, insulting, or distracting in the least. So forgive the man for having a slightly off-day at Vegas. Announcing is a tough job, it takes a lot to do it. But what it never needs is a bunch of guys out there telling him he sucks without ever really trying it themselves. It takes a brave man to do announcing, so we should thank him for even volunteering in the first place.

So enough about the talk on Rockefeller. Leave him alone, he’s a good guy and really funny. He doesn’t deserve the shit you guys are dishing on him. Any further posts on Rockefeller, either to praise him or berate him, will cause this thread to be closed (I’ll open a new suggestions thread). Let’s move on to other, more constructive suggestions, shall we?

also, i setup a good portion of chairs for the finals, then you guys just move the chairs anywhere you please, whats the point of organizing them in straight lines?

Analysis and commentary after and even before each game would be cool. There was a smattering this year, but it wasn’t always in depth. Even though we all know what’s going on, it’s pretty good for bridging playtime, kinda like sports.

I get the feeling that mostly everyone just didn’t want commentary at all… rather than anyone doing any better. Silence is golden… except for the ooohhhhhs and aahhhhhs of course.

And yet another evo passes with the failed attempt to go “ey!!” during ever hit of the Genei-Jin… face it… we’re not fobbed enough to do that in America.
