Yeah I agree with you, sadly we don’t really have any great GTFO assists anymore, Hulk can do this but it’s near impossible to confirm off of after you escape block stun.
I’m looking for a list of IMs “bffs” or characters that work exceptionally well when backed by unibeam and viseversa. So far I Have some obvious answers but I am looking for some lesser known team mates that make everyone’s favorite avenger stronger. So far I have:
I probably don’t know as much about Iron Man as a lot of the other posters, but I play Cap/Iron/Hulk, and the Hulk anti-air assist does a lot to help Tony out.
While it is very hard to combo off of the Gamma Charge, well-placed airdashes can form left/right mixups, plus the obvious fact that the armor makes Iron Man that much harder to land hits against.
I mean, from what I can tell, the best way to play IM is to zone with uni, SB, and his j. Hs, plus abusing airdashes for mobility. Armored assist covers the vulnerabilities, and keeps the advantage for IM, overall.
The only reason I don’t rlly like the team is that hulk has a hard time getting in without assists so I don’t like him on anchor :/. But cap with unibeam is gdlk
I was wondering if anyone has found success with following their own smart bombs with a tridash from super jump height. The guide (particular the picture on page 252) shows Dante’s jam session (and it also suggests dormammus pillar but I have a feeling that would be far less effective) to prevent the opponent from dashing under you. This seems like an effective way to lock your opponent down and FORCE them to deal with a mixup from IM… Dante just seems to be really good with ironman, thoughts?
Also happy new years even though this post is a couple of days late lol
My main team has Dante with unibeam assist and I definitely like the synergy. I haven’t really unlocked too much with the super jump tridash stuff yet using the assist but it keeps them still long enough to get a high low going. I really like how they both provide ideal assists for each other and I really like unibeam over doom beam now that I’ve been putting it to use in casual matches. I can never go back to doom beam now that I’ve seen the shit you can do on hit with unibeam. You might as well not combo off of it cuz you get a free mix up into unscaled damage any way.
Right now I’ve just been using jam session when I switch Dante to anchor spot just so I can keep them on the ground long enough for basic high/low with SJ ADD j.M’s and c.M’s Super jumping forward and then ADDing with M creates a makeshift tri dash since the range on his j.M is crazy any way for an air move that starts up in 8 frames. I love using tiger knee’d unibeams to keep people from jumping in the air to shoot shit and once I figure out the spacing for smart bombs it should be a solid way to help pressure and shut down other projectile games from the air.
Even if I don’t have an assist for him and he’s just in XF3 he’s easy to hurp durp around with and the speed increase helps some of his movement issues any way. Plus the most basic ass combo will kill somebody and if you only need to kill one or 2 people it’s not terrible odds at all. I just gotta figure out how to consistently combo off air throws and ground throws and I should be good for basic clean up with anchor Iron Man. If I feel like I need the jam session assist for Iron man in a certain matchup or situation I can always tag Iron Man in and have Dante be the anchor and get done what I can that way too.
He’s definitely a rather abstract take on an 8 way air dash character but I love the way he plays and he definitely has my favorite beam of all of them for sure. His execution is really fun too and I’m sure there’s a lot of little things I’m missing with him that I’ll learn to put together later. Even if he’s the worst of all the Marvel air dashers next to Thor his assists are gdlk and he’s just too fun to play. I look forward to figuring out some new tech with the Man of Iron.
awesome! i like IM at the anchor position for the reasons you said as as well. as long as you arent expecting him to be a world beater there on his own on point… then i think its his best position.
yeah, i also like his derp damage in xf3… never really thought of it as derp… but now that you mention it, it certainly is. even basic ass combos tod half the cast or more. and he does ok chip in xf3 as well.
anywho good to see IM working out for you
his assist is definitely godlike in its overall applications.
My vanilla team was Dante, X-23, Iron-Man. I took out Dante for Nova more so because the changes to Dante made him feel like an entire different character to me. I may get back into the lab to relearn Dante just because he’s an all around character with real good mixups, but I’m just loving the Iron Man-Nova combo too much. Option Select Nova Slam/Grab after unibeam assist is just too good to pass up imo and it helps his game tremendously. As you’ve stated, smartbombs from super jump height is highly effective because even in blockstun, the opponent has to sit there for a 50/50 mixup. The problem is getting them to sit there and take it. But even if the opponent do get’s under you, I find it so easy to escape using his new airdash because it travels so far away to the opposite screen which helps his run away ability from superjumping. IM is one of the few characters who can easily escape from falling Superjump mixups with his airdash because it gets him back on the ground in an instant.
Ironman has a mid screen rom that I’m trying to master. I will keep you guys posted on how far I get. I don’t know what kind of uses you can get out of it since it involves a lot of super jumping, but its flashy.
I would venture to imagine that because unibeam keeps the opponent in place. Thats what he means by mixup situation. Plasma beam knocks down on hit. On block they function the same. But on hit, there is a major difference. IM unibeam hits = frame adv to get a mixup into damage. At least thats my take on it. Its also Team dependent as some characters dont care about the doom knockdown with the beam
He has a really really easy midscreen air throw follow-up. After the air throw, just Air Dash Down Forward and let it take you allll the way to the ground. You’ll land right up against them. Then do a Light Smart Bomb, and you can pick them up with cr.M into whatever from there.
There’s only two things to worry about really - if you’ve already used your air dash, you obviously won’t be able to do it again. In X-Factor he may be fast enough to Fly and then air dash still, I don’t know.
The other is that if you do a back airthrow, the game messes up and interprets your down+forward motion as down+back if you hold the joystick in that direction during his air throw animation. Just let the joystick return to neutral and then input down+forward after Iron Man has completely rotated from the air throw. That should solve any inconsistency you’re having there.
Lastly, I haven’t found a way to combo off of his ground throw midscreen unassisted, but in the corner you can stick out a normal and hit them before they hit the ground, or you can just L Smart Bomb them once they do hit the ground, and then pick them up into a combo you’re comfortable with.
So apparently, IM’s ADUF and ADUB recover the fastest of all his tridashes. This means you can use most of the dashing momentum while still being able to block. I don’t think it’s that useful since the trajectory on those air dashes aren’t really helpful. Eh, maybe it’s useful to get a safe airgrab attempt? I dunno.
Well for me, Iron Man’s airdashes are solely meant for super jump height. I usually use it to escape crossunder attempts by airdashing to the opposite side of the screen since it travels so far. It’s also an easy way to get in for unsuspecting opponents who are waitng for you to come back down because it catches them off guard. As you said, thanks to the changes of blocking after an airdash, Iron Man can safely land to the ground from superjump height without any worrying.
True, and that’s why I usually tag Hulk in before he’s by himself. He’s in the third slot so that if Cap needs red health and he goes on point, he can’t get blown up to kill Cap’s red health.
If the dashes go high enough to move the camera away, you could try and crossup with assists? Really, that and the airthrow you mentioned are about all I can think of.
How well does Magneto help an IM team? I’ve gone back and forth about removing Hulk, and Magneto is one of the few characters I’ve played around with besides my avengers. My main worry is assists. No real reason to have two beams, but then I don’t know which beam to lose, and what to change it to.
For normal jump height, backdash H, flight cancel H keeps opponents at bay. It’s a great poke. Also from, 3/4 of the screen, Iron Man can box jump S, flight cancel into S for a double overhead which is a real good technique to use for a mixup.
You can change Iron Man’s unibeam to repulsar to get Magneto in. Magneto really has no assists to help Iron Man other than the otg magnetic grab to extend combos. Repulsar keeps opponents lockdown for Magneto to tri-dash mixup with. Cover repulsar with disruptor. You can also make it a good anti-air assist but with Magneto having his launcher and standing L, why bother?
You can call Magneto disruptor assist and normal jump ADDF j.m, down h, s or empty low from 3/4 of the screen away. The beam is fast enough to cover your approach and IM should be able to hit before they touch the ground. The only problem is it can be obvious, not that tricky to block and lose to chicken guard, but it does get you in there from quite far away.
Unless you don’t have an assist to help Magneto rush in, otherwise I would stick with Uni-beam. I only use Repulsar Blast for lock down and some combos.
With Dante specifically even if they advance guard they still have to deal with the same mix up. High/low into, air dash cross up or sit and c.L if they try to jump out of the cross up.
So say my opponent is locked down on the ground by drones, missles, cold star ect. What are some of the most ambiguous strings? So far if I’m far away I have:
SuperJump addf d.H
SuperJump addf c.L
SuperJump addf H xx fly xx H xx unfly c.L OR falling H
SuperJump addf throw
This is pretty much day one and Brady guide stuff but I specifically need help with the box dashing stuff you guys were talking about
Also message me with your GT if you play IM on XBOX LIVE and would like to play me, currently I use IM/Doom/Sent but am working on an IM/Dante team.
