I have worked as a creative director in the past, and I am currently a mkt vp of top 100.
Niitsuma made the right choice. As a relatively new leader he needed the results internally and to get the right “sponsors” externally. If you really think character selection was based on consumer data and preference you are dead wrong.
Entertainment Innovation is very predictable:
· Source of volume (or share of mkt): Why will people buy your product and not the competitors?
· Incremental Profitability: Will my choice help make my money pie bigger?
· Cannibalizing profitability: Will consumers pass on another of my products for this choice?
· Concept fit (Or experience Design): Does it help me complete the experiential puzzle of the product or help me complement the empty spaces?
· Strategic Business Model Sustainability: Does my choice help me build long term relations with big business partners and other parts of the supply chain?
· Current business Model Sustainability: Does my choice insure my on-going business a long and prosper stability?
This goes on… hard core fans will probably think most of those questions can be manipulated into the right answer for them. But I beg you to try to think like a business man and not like a fan.
It has been proven over and over in many markets not only the VGI, that hard core fans are not a reliable source of growth. So to simplify Niitsuma´s choice: (Hypothetical situation) I much rather have sponsors and partners come back and help finance a MVC4 than give hardcore fans immediately what they want.
Niitsuma made the right choice for the majority. (Total gamers vs total megaman fans)
I blame this entire cry-babies breakout on the modernity of immediacies. Consumers are over-indulged by their own ignorance.

I’ve never really played this game to like win tournaments or anything because XF and DHC glitch keeps the game way too random for it to matter how much you study. Hopefully the tone downs in Ultimate will make it so when I learn something new it actually matters.
