ULTIMATE Balance/Tier talk thread

I’m thinking Dorm is looking to be top tier at this point. He can set up his own safe left/rights without assists now which is ridiculous. Still needs some assist help to control the screen but his ability to get in safely and apply pressure is completely better with finger to port.

As far as top tier day one shenanigans online goes…Skrull with Strider vajra assist is the new skrull + lariat.

doom+strider are still best friends but now its doom on point with strider assist

I played a significant portion of this morning before crashing from lack of sleep. Once I go to Starbase and the like to observe how other people are using the new tools I’ll post some more in depth thoughts. I don’t like to state things without adequate information.

vergil feels very clunky. strange level 1 is seriously amazing.

I personally am excited to see how everyone plays on IPW/WNF/Xanadu come Wednesday. Then we might have a bit of a base to make assumptions from. For now, I want to see New Spencer in action tearing shit up.

Chris G wins the first UMvC3 weekly tourney after release with Ryu/Firebrand/Hawkeye with Masta CJ as second place with Frank/Dormammu/Wesker.

Firebrand and Hawkeye are looking scary.

Is gonna be very tough to define the Tops in this game it seems so that’s a decent job by Capcom.

Only thing ATM is that Hsien-Ko remains Low Tier.

Hawkeye keeping you out for days as the chip accumulates from all the arrows flying. Then use poison arrow every know to slowly tick you health as he just fires arrow. Then basic combo into death. Golden arrow of death as well.

Firebrand, is the annoying flyer I thought he would be. Low damage but damn, can he open you up.

Its true, for some reason is super cool to hate on wesker, as if would be on vergil if he ended up top tier.

Also dormammu is going to be gdlk in UMVC3, but i think tat is pretty obvious and i dont even need to remember any one that he is going to be on the top.

And for the people disregarding iron fist, he may not have a lot of air options, but with some good anti-air assist hes going to be very good, there is no way hes low tier.

…So does Rocket have the assist character syndrome…because nobody bothers to try play as him so far…

Nah, Rocket is like MODOK just weird to play with. People will just have to invest and learn how to perform his shit. Same for Strange. Reason why they won’t be popular. You have to learn a brand new playstyle with them.

I would actually say Firebrand is more like MODOK in that you have to get use to his weird movements… like how some of his specials cancel into fly automatically, his command dashes because he doesnt have a regular 2 button dash.

Firebrand is mad fun (and good too)

Tony seems really good this time around. I’ll have to wait to get some games in to get a feel for his abare now (was the main thing that kept me away from him in vanilla so it might still be an issue). My day 1 ghetto Iron Maneto combo does 800k with 1 meter and 1 assist and is 0.5 meters positive…

But see, Firebrand outside of the flight cancel has standard normals and specials. Rocket/MODOK/Strange are characters that either there normals are nowhere near what we expect or implore us to play the char a different way.

So people will have to wait to figure them out.

So, I played over 30 matches online tonight, relatively lag-free might I add, and I’ve formed some early opinions on the new characters, and a few of the old.

Ghost Rider - What do you all think about him now? I stand by my statement that he’s terribad, and will be made worse by tech that will get developed in the weeks to come. Very gimmicky, and I was usually able to rush him down very easily. Granted, everyone is still a noob with the new characters, but I’m using all new guys too. They can’t all be total noobs.

Hawkeye - Very, very good. I noticed two things immediately about this game. Less meter, and crazy chip. His arrows do disgusting chip, and he can fire them so fast. Also, there is no reason he should be able to self relaunch. I see him being a serious problem character.

Strider - Highly technical, and very good. I’d say one of the best new characters, period. His combos are pretty hard, but everyone has harder combos this time around. There’s no more DHC glitch; if you want damage, you have no choice but to get technical. I think Strider’s tools are really underrated. Ouroboros is ridiculous. If you know what you’re doing, free character, or two in XF. Surprisingly enough, his zoning is excellent. I was able to basically dominate my opponent at full screen because of how fast his robots come out. He was a fairly competent opponent, too. I could’ve kept him out for the match, but I didn’t feel like being so lame on release day, lol.

Firebrand - I… don’t see it. He just looks so garbage. I expected a lot from him, but he’s just so technical and bad? I don’t even know anymore, probably gotta see a better Firebrand/spend more time with him to fully form my opinion.

Nemesis - Beast. He works so well with Bolts of Balthak (spelling?) assist. I mean, everyone works well with that, but this guy especially. He really impressed me, as he doesn’t seem as trashy as I expected. Definitely hits hard, and his air rocket is good for zoning. The only thing I wish were different is that his L command grab is so short… He has to be right next to them. I was hoping for half of Skrull range.

Strange - Well, he’s not the next Phoenix. I take that back. I’m maining him regardless of tier position, but I will admit I’m a little disappointed. For some reason, I’ve yet to get his Air MMH xx Impact Palm xx Teleport, S relaunch to work. I generally have good execution, I guess it’s just really tight? Also, I’m surprised at his specials. Specifically Laggers of Denak, Eye of Lagamotto, and Grace of Sluggoth. Also, I don’t get why you can’t superjump, M Daggers, Teleport. I guess he’ll be assist-dependent.

Vergil - It’s Mahvel, baybee! This guy is just easy mode. It’s so absurd. On top of his incredible moveset, I can be swag with even a basic combo that’s super easy. He’s just… Too easy. But I guess that’s fine since Dante’s execution barrier was raised. Something for everybody?

Iron Fist - Am I missing something? Seems downright terrible. I must be missing something. Why can’t I just hold down-back and mash advancing guard? His overhead is absurdly slow, so that’s not a threat. I hope somebody can make this guy work. Fast.

Phoenix Wright - I’m conflicted. Mobility of Arthur, but he gathers evidence super fast. Yet it’s hard to actually land Objection, and even when you do, he still has terrible mobility. But, that 0-frame hyper might just make up for it. Only time will tell, I suppose.

Nova - Didn’t spend much time with him. He feels really slow, though. Good damage, but really, really slow and unsafe.

Frank West - He’s good, I suppose. No god tier, and his roll is usually predictable, but he has some nice ranged normals that will help him once his metagame develops. I think he’ll be mid tier, though.

Rocket Raccoon - Uhh… Again, I gotta be missing something. Basically I see an annoying little Raccoon with 500k combos that have tight timing, and he has very little comboability. Low tier?

Trish - Got killed. Immediately I noticed her dive kick is so floaty now that it’s easy to react to. Gone are the days of getting surprise divekicked when I thought she was setting up traps. I just don’t see a better Trish overall.

Doom - Really good. That divekick speed is insane.

That’s all I have for tonight… Tired lol.

Firebrand is basically Aerail Jill in IMO.

Honestly if people think that damage is everything, Strider would be low tier. He has great tools, but his followup don’t do great damage.

Someone please explain to me how the fuck Firebrand is actually bad. I’m not saying he’s god or anything but he is far from bad.

He isn’t. He isn’t bad at all. Of course though people just look at him damage output and go “OMG dat is teh assest character everz!”.

Firebrand has crazy mobility and insane mixups/resets basically at his disposal whenever he wants. He can also combo off any grab anywhere on the screen. He has nasty things where he basically does 3 overheads in a row… he can instant overhead and if thats blocked can put you into a 50/50 mixup (press B quick hit them in the front, delay it for a sec hit them in the back).

I honestly a few times have wrecked 2 charcters by level 3 xfc + Firebrands level 3 and just mashed buttons and that shit is crazy… its so hard to block and even when you do it chips.

His assists are pretty Meh though unfortunately.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that he is somewhat difficult to use. To most people for some reason difficult to use = ass

You know who has a good neutral game and crap damage in Vanilla… Morrigan.

However, FireBrands neutral seems much better, and his damage, while bad, is much better than Morrigan. Though overall the two characters seem kinda similar.

Firebrand is a Morrigan on steroids. I dont expect him to be great but he isn’t bad. At this point he is somewhere right in the middle… maybe a little above that.

Day 1 Impressions. Really enjoy the effort Capcom put into making this game less retarded. Definitely have to create a well thought out team due to all the assist nerfs. No more OP easy gimmicks… at the moment. Love all the new characters and enjoy that they are much more diverse than this the same ABC launch OTG relaunch BS for 90% of the original cast.

Seems like Capcom was able to make this game more zone oriented. I like it. It is a BIG change and I am getting blown up left and right for all my free dashes, but it will be great to figure out and adapt. The meta game has changed so much. So far the new characters that stand out to me as Top tier contenders are
[LIST]
[]Hawkeye - A tier easily. Great normals great zoning and mobility. any set of normals+ assist into his QCB+H is a very good cross over mixup.Very good lvl 1 hyper.
[
]Rocket Raccoon - B+ to A+ Looking good, definitely a character that will take skill and effort to play. His keep away is subpar with lack of fast traveling projectiles aside from his heavy normals. If opponent gets overy RR’s head will be a bad situation. Needs his traps and NEEDS ASSISTS. Claymore will be a life saver. Potentially great mix-ups and great instant overheads with his storm like jump float cancel. Already found an unblockable without any assists and a few resets with his spring Hyper. 550k-740k+ per combo not bad so far.
[]Strider - He will be annoying good. Haven’t touched him much yet, but with what I started doing he can handle you rough with great normals, great teleports, wall cling. Decent zoning. His Y assist seems to be really good. Hard knock down for characters with OTG capabilities.
[
]Frank West - A force to be reckoned with as the game goes on. He has great mix-ups after level 1 plus amazing normals and a decent projectile.

Overrated? Doctor Strange, looked iffy. Needs assists to keep away and setup his game. Good character but not amazing. Will lose hard to rush down or teleport characters possibly. Ghost rider looks about just as I figured him. Annoying but definitely can be handled. I have a feeling GR will be used a lot online because of the spam ability of jumping S and a good ranged assist like sent drones.
