ULTIMATE Balance/Tier talk thread

Never said anything of the sort. Phoenix is still a really good character it’s just that the meter game is different. Also given that her assists got their hitstun nerfed, it feels like she doesn’t go as good with Wesker as before. I like her with Trish or Zero. I like Zero/Doom/Phoenix a lot actually, I would go so far as to say that looks like not just a really strong team, but a team that flat counters most other tournament players’ teams, it’s just that team has 2 characters I can’t use.

My early tournament teams will likely be Wesker/Doom/Phoenix, Wesker/Strider/Doom, Ghost Rider/Wesker/Sentinel, Trish/Wesker/Doom, Wesker/Spencer/Doom, Ghost Rider/Strider/Hawkeye. If I ever get good enough with Doom to the point that I actually have confidence in him as opposed to my current Doom which is “gee, I hope you get hit by foot dive because that’s all I got right now”, I think I could do some damage in tournaments. I want to play more Hawkeye considering that he looks like a monster, I’m just complete garbage with him. That’ll take at least a month before I have anything beyond random slides and reaction gimlets.

Anyways to answer 2nd question.
Easiest team is Wesker/Sentinel/Doom or Wesker/Spencer/Doom. 1 week into this game and I’m already completely sick of Spencer. When I get back from Thanksgiving I’ll probably kill a week deconstructing that character.

mvc3 doom is too technical for you viscant.

What’s your opinion on PW’s viability ?

Yeah Wesker + 2 strong assists sounds like the way to go to get in and get going as easily as possible without relying on Phoenix. Wesker + spencer grapple assist is hella annoying too. Cheap ass welcome mix ups with that assist + any teleport/command dash based character really. There’s even old vanilla videos of Captain America doing cheap stuff with that assist.

Zero still build a boat load of meter in his combos and is still the same hard as fuck to touch 2 armed, 2 legged, one sword wielding spaceship of hit boxes he’s been since Vanilla. Weaker Haggar/Tron assist hurts a bit but there’s plenty of new retardo assists in this game and any of Doom’s assists completely help his get in and mix up better any ways.

I know that Trish is still good , but how would she help a Phoenix team? I do not remember her meter building being that good(whether you do her keepaway or actually rush down).
And meterless damage is not as high as Doom or Wesker.

She’s harder to land a clean hit on than both Wesker or Doom firstly. She can sit at the top right of the screen and then swoop down suddenly into offense from a spot that neither of them can do much anything about without an anti air assist or guessing with super to anti air. Can’t air throw a cancellable dive kick so yeah. There’s been some day one Trish/Morrigan/Phoenix stuff going on in Vanilla that had some success but Trish with Doom Missiles and Phoenix at the end could still be great. Trish plus Doom missiles is hella annoying and helps give her OTG’s without having to spend meter. Plus Doom builds boat loads of meter and is decently self sufficient without assists if he has to come in second.

As far as Trish’s specific meter build…I’m sure she can build at least a meter in a basic combo without issue and the general work it takes to land a clean hit on Trish’s high ass priority normals makes it so you could easily be landing 2 and 3 combos before you die. Especially with the mix up and reset potential she gets afterwards. Plus Doom missiles act as a combo breaker for her and allow her to build meter from a range that Wesker and Doom can’t do as effectively. Trish laming out at the top of the screen with missiles means you will have to block something so she will be building meter regardless.

I think the most effective Phoenix teams now will be which ever ones are the hardest to land clean hits on so they can get to the 5 without ever getting hit or snapped to begin with. Any character that can force the opponent to grind for a long period of time before they can hit them will be great for Phoenix teams now that running in with Wesker and Haggar won’t exactly be ideal anymore.

Wesker’s mixup game was accidentally (maybe?) nerfed by changing hitstun deterioration on a lot of assists. You get bounced higher in most situations which lets people tech into much better defensive positions AND without mandatory soft knockdowns, it completely eliminates the ground state resets from Wesker’s game (which even top players basically never avoided as long as I only did them once every 3-4 matches). Much harder to set up the truly ambiguous setups. This makes the Spencer assist so much better for Wesker since it actually works and puts you back into the ground state mixup area. If Wesker/Spencer didn’t have overlapping counters, this would be such a great team, unfortunately it seems like they do. Or maybe not, I don’t know a lot about Spencer yet. Just my opinion for now.

And Jozhear, no real idea on P.Wright. I haven’t seen much of him yet from other people in the area. I’ll put time in on him, just a few things are ahead of him in line.

Yeah that’s why I don’t buy people arguing Wesker’s SFIV Guile buffs. Ok yeah he does more damage when his glasses falls off but at the cost of his strongest tools for pressure and mix up? Doesn’t exactly make him a better character IMO. Just step your execution up with someone who can still TOD without needing their glasses to fall off first. That character is also most likely cheaper on point than Wesker also as added benefit.

Nothing about Wesker got cheaper. He’s just the easiest to use of the cheaper higher tiers but also most likely the least cheap of the people who could vouch for high tier ATM.

Omg! You totally got to the video about the hard knock down before I did. I am mad jealous, but happy for you too :D.

Then outdo me!

I’m sure I didn’t touch on everything, and I’ve already improved on most of those combos…

I’m pretty sure I hear Tony Starks crying everytime one of those Nova videos comes out.

Yeah, I just uploaded the new IM BnB, it’s actually really good, but then I look at the Nova stuff… Well, Tony does have range and assists, which are important.

Well I based that comment loosely on something someone said in an irc channel. My plan was to evoke a response from you by saying that and it worked.

I could read paragraphs of your analysis. So I’m thankful when you do come in and post stuff. You should really start doing a podcast or something.

Yeah Iron Man will definitely still have the better assists on top of a solid point game…but as far as point goes I don’t see him topping that Nova stuff. Good lawd.

Nope, that Javelin Glitch I discovered, is pure, unadulterated evil, and in my opinion, make Nova a contender for best point character. Meter… who needs meter…

Yeah he’s looking like another Vanilla Dante/Viper/Zero character that can just TOD you by themselves if you go in training mode for certain number of hours. So much for needing resets with certain characters in Ultimate. He does have his issues on point but, nothing as glaring as what Tony Straks had or probably still has.

Tony’s not in an awful position in this game actually, and I don’t think it’s Nova’s spot he’s poised to take.

Spoiler

It’s Magneto’s

Iron man = swag
Nova = Captain Falcon

Only thing you need to think about when making your team.

The people in the Iron Man forum have been discovering a lot of amazing new technology with him. I think at the moment he’s the character that’s being slept on the most, people look at what he lost and thinks that he’s crap now (as if he wasn’t crap in vanilla) but they aren’t looking at what he has gained.

Magneto even with his gravity pull push randomness doesn’t look like the same threat in general that he was in Vanilla. He’s still pretty good but he’s just looking like a strong character now and not so much the cheap tear you down off any stray hit character he was in Vanilla. Seeing him throw people and then not dying afterwards is hilarious.
