ULTIMATE Balance/Tier talk thread

Felicia requires skill to play decently I’m sure frank does too, Akuma and Wolvie don’t. So what you get is a deadly combo in the hands of a great player but most importantly EXTREME CONSISTENCY.

Felicia and Frank aren’t as popular as characters either. There are some duets that’s as good as BFF’s but I bet you none of them are as easy as Vanilla wolvie and Akuma.

Here’s my theory on strider, His assist is so good most teams are based around it. Therefore people run him anchor and he never has assists to help him out. He really doesn’t need them, but I could only imagine Strider with Hawkeye arrows or drones to cover him. That be insane.

you would be suprised how easy it is to get right on top of him

and rocket skate then wild ripper hits half screen and his jumping s is bigger than himself and can be cancled can even do a rom type combo with j.s on airborne characters

Akuma’s Tatsu on point was never an issue. As an assist though, that shit was obnoxious.

My understanding is they nerfed the hitbox on Akuma’s head so it won’t AA like it used to (that was so stupid). Still GDLK though.

Also, I got Nova doing 800k with a BnB, that’s alot of damage… Is Vanilla happening again? shrug

I thought Mystic Ray and Tatsu assists serve different roles anyway.

Also, is Shuma fast/mobile enough in XF now to get in on the opponent and do his thing with the karadashes?

He’s slower in xf than before. It’s also dumb how badly they programmed chaos dimension. . . only the ground version can be mashed ._.

@flyingve: they also reduced its priority. My point with that video was that people overestimate akuma’s tools as a character because of the shit they saw in xfactor as well as various online tactics. In reality though, akuma never had a lot of options, and if his assist wasn’t that great, he would be a pretty terrible character. I got so sick and tired of seeing people putting haggar and tron in like F tier and akuma in A tier. People still actually think akuma’s command dash is good enough to be called a teleport. People still think his tatsus are safe. People still think the shoryuken super is invincible. People still think his beam super is safe. People still don’t know that if akuma tosses an air fireball, you have all day to punish that shit, and that his demonflip is unsafe throughout the entire fucking thing. Ryu is the more godlike akuma now imo, and it’s fucking dumb that akuma has such low health, and the only reason is probably because capcom wants him to always have the least health in the game sans phoenix because he’s always had low health in all his games, … it’s why he was 800k in vanilla (lowest sans phoenix and characters tied in health), and now he’s at 750k (lowest sans phoenix and ties in health) More people would probably agree if he didn’t have his assisst (I’m not sure if it is that amazing now because the change logs aren’t accurate.) It’s okay though. I think I’m done with this topic on his health for a bit because I seem to be alone. Inb4 someone justifies his health by mentioning Jwong akuma comebacks. Dude is famous for making comebacks with every character because he is smart. Cyclops wasn’t exactly the best point character in mvc2, and we all know how that went.

Oh, really? That’s just… wow. Well, I guess that’s one thing Akuma does better. Agreed that that’s no reason for his health. I honestly just think it’s out of tradition at this point, which is stupid.

I just realized how awesome your avatar is. No idea who the little guy in the middle is, though.

IMO Akuma can still be ridiculously good in the right hands, he’s still got tons of tools to utilise on point, he has an overall greater level of maneuverability than before thanks to his new air demon flip which also opens up new combos up for him, his tatsu assist is still an extremely useful tool in team building, it’s just that now you can’t just throw it out like it’s going out of style as was possible in the original, his damage potential is completely bonkers (from mid screen I can pull off a combo without using assists that pushes the opponent into the corner, builds and spends one bar for approximately 850k damage depending on how well you mash, which will deal over 1 million if you spend an extra bar for his follow up otg air beam super), overall I think that he’s still looking like a real threat in Ultimate.

I’m about to sleep, so I don’t want to disect all of this, although a lot of this is true. There is some misinformation here. Idk is I would call the air demon flip opening “new combos.” If anything it reduces the damage of your combos. Ground demonflip combos did way more damage like:

c:m:s:h:f:h::rdp::l::l:jc. j :m: j :h: j :s: j :qcf::l: j :m: j :h: j :s: j :qcf::l: j :m: j :h: j :s: j :qcb::l::s:…
It’s alright, I guess I’ll just remain alone with thinking its really dumb that he has such low health. I’ll continue this akuma life discussion tommorow!
@Noble Cactus
To be quite honest. I don’t know anything about my avatar. I just ripped it from google images because it looked funny.

Let Akuma do SGS in the air.

His low life is uncalled for, this isn’t SF4, he isn’t cheap enough.

I hear he can’t do air beam hadou XF air beam hadou either for some reason.

  • People still actually think akuma’s command dash is good enough to be called a teleport. *

With an assist in the middle it basically is. He can do the same Dante/Wolverine/23 assist in the middle shit it’s just no one plays him on point where it really matters any way. Tatsu assist is too gdlk for people to wanna mess with his point game.

People still think his tatsus are safe.

Maybe so, but grounded tatsus especially don’t really have much use outside of combos any way.

  • People still think his beam super is safe.*

Air beam super is definitely safe. He can block from frame 1 after the super is done. Meaning if he forced you to block the beam you can’t punish. Not even with bionic arm. Ground beam super is only for DHC combos (the ground beam of course being punishable otherwise). Shoryu to beam super is about as safe of a self GTFO me as it gets. Invincible shoryu, stay safe incase it gets blocked with air beam.

Tatsu assist is still way too good and does way too much for for a character’s get in and mix up where I would say having 750k health is tolerable. He’s still clearly within the top 10 scariest anchors of the game if people are just going to still use him tatsu assist any way. When it comes to being anchor health doesn’t really matter much any way because people usually have XF and meters any way where one touch is going to kill anybody any way.

Beam air XF beam would have been super durp any way since he can block from frame 1 after an air beam as it is. Might as well just XF on the ground and then just scare people from calling assists so you can move in.

That combo that you just said is the start of the meterless I mentioned…
Follow up the launcher with j:h:, j:qcb::l:, :qcf::atk::atk:[MASH!], :S: for around 850k.
Anyway as far as his health nerf goes, in the end I feel pretty indifferent towards it since his health was already so low anyway that lowering it felt by 50k doesn’t really feel like it makes too much of a difference in the end, in the end I feel like Capcom gave him the health nerf as well as the tatsu nerf to make it so the player doesn’t feel that they can just get away with chucking out stuff with Akuma and his teamates which was one of the main reasons that team BFFs was so hated, instead having pay more respect onto their actions which I feel as a very good decision.
Anyway though, yeah we should probably drop the subject for now and just wait and see how things turn out as the gameplay develops.

LOL @ anyone saying Akuma isn’t good enough for 750k health. Dude is still retard mode with insta beams and a high priority tatsu that still goes through everything. Very mash friendly character still with even better mixups thanks to air demon flip.

No prob, main thing I wanted to illustrate is that flight isn’t 100% useless.

I will agree that his high-low game’s lacking though, but it’s no big since he has poor normals and no air dash to constantly apply pressure.

I need to hear this list :smiley:

/lurking

For the record, everything beats out bionic arm at the right range. Sentinel’s standing M beats it.

Bionic Arm is just an epic dragon punch. Of course it’s going to beat if you give them time to react. See: every Spencer that isn’t Combofiend.

The biggest nerf to Akuma is probably the slower meter gain. He used to be incredibly spoiled coming in with 4 or 5 bars ready to spam away. Now it’s MVC3 : Recession Edition and he has to share it with others.

I haven’t really tried poking at a tier list yet just because I don’t think we’ve seen enough practiced high level play representing enough characters yet. Hell even the last big tier thread didn’t pop up until a month after the game was out.

So far the trend looks similar to how Vanilla started though : people are thinking that all these characters may be more playable than they are. As people uncover new things and interactions between characters, the standard for what is ‘good enough’ constantly goes up. What it took to be considered playable in October 2011 was WAY different than in March 2011.

I’ll frame it another way - if we think the A Tier is huge, we’re probably just not judging characters harshly enough. It’s like saying everyone’s in the top 20%, which obviously can’t happen.

Maybe if they were all Ryu/Ken clones, you could say something like “everyone’s on the same level.” But the characters are so wildly different in this that I would really doubt it.

Fucking Godlike BnB working on it now… good shit.

As for the tier list conversation … Akuma is still retardedly good and this game is going to take a while to settle down there are several characters who are definitely Amazing/improved that are being overlooked for some of the easier options. After playing some of my friends in casuals the other night I will say I am now afraid of Future Firebrand,RocketRaccoon,Captain America and Felicia Players(I am laughing at everyone who said nova was dull and easy)… Also Thors new self relaunch you die combos say hi… (Sips Odins Beer.)

800k sure is a lot of damage. That seems like, even aside from his assist, he’ll be a really good point character. And 800k! Wait… Where else have I said 800k…? By the hoary hosts of Hoggoth, I don’t know… Oh wait. :wink:

In all seriousness, nice Bnb.

Isn’t that loop quite difficult/inconsistent on certain characters midscreen though? Not sure if it’s BnB material if that’s the case
