Never slept on that Gargoyle.
he reminds me of a wolverine with wings and a projectile thats air-ok but with low damage.

You know who else had low damage?
Vanilla Wesker.
Low damage doesn’t mean much when you have infinite ways to pressure and reset your opponent.
So what about the characters that have crazy mix-up and pressure AND do high damage?
Of course not, I know that. I’ve mained Hulk since MvC2 (back when people used chars they liked instead of tier status). I just happen to like all these chars (I really don’t even like Firebrand, but I do like how he plays). Any advice would help:)
My early impressions of the newcomers, tier-wise so far would be:
Strider - Top
Vergil - High
Frank - Mid-High
Nemesis - Low
Firebrand - Mid
Phoenix Wright - Top, possibly in his own tier.
RR - Low-mid
Iron Fist - Low or bottom
Hawkeye - High or top
Strange - High
Ghost Rider - Mid
Nova - Mid
Obviously it’s waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too early to say, but that’s what I’d guess at so far.
Like I said, the only thing that balances Firebrand/Strider is damage. It doesn’t matter because he can stay on your ass FOREVER. It’s the same shit with Hawkeye where he does little damage, but he can pester you for days.
I’ve been in scientist mode with Vergil this week so that’s all I can really talk about for now:
Yes, he has unsafe normals. This doesn’t matter: he has safe strings. String ending in Stinger XX Judgement Cut (M or H) is +3, and leaves Vergil at his perfect fighting distance (3/4 screen away). If your opponent starts pushblocking to try to catch you doing the wrong Judgement Cut, just release the Round Trip instead; they’ve given you a free 50/50 teleport mixup. Super good.
So we don’t care that Vergil’s normals on their own are unsafe. He can press some buttons at near full screen, and he gets a free blockstring. Not even Zero can easily press buttons on Vergil… and anytime Zero has trouble pressing buttons you know there’s some high-end BS going on. BUT the really cool thing about this is that not only will he press a button and it will hit/beat the opponent, but it will also nullify the opponents projectile assist. This guy plays at full screen and doesn’t care about the only thing that helps rushers close the gap. This is huge. Don’t try to rush with him (not without Devil Trigger at least), he isn’t Dante. He uses his giant ass and quick startup normals to stop the opponent’s offense, and once he’s trained you to block you’ll be eating unreactable 50/50s (self mixups with Round Trip or with something like Doom beam). Vergil’s modus operandi is to basically shutdown everything that makes traditional Marvel 3 top tiers good. Like Strange, once he has breathing room, he’s won the neutral game.
The two main things that Vergil has problems with are fast (sub 3frame/invincible) reversals and air lame out. To answer air BS, just pick Strider Vajra assist; Trish and crew can no longer play projectile games in the sky, as one ninja call = groundbounce into combo -> reset -> dead character. Quick reversals though still seem to be a problem. Bionic Arm, EX Seismo, Hyper Charging Star and the like can be pressed on reaction to any stinger, as there’s a small window between that and the Judgement Cut. Calling Doom (or probably a better lockdown assist like Sent or Ammy cold star) might be the answer to those matchups, but I dont think anything’s guaranteed.
But keep in mind the above is Vergil not using meter. DT or Swords Vergil is all of the full screen control, PLUS he gets to rush you down. This is… not pleasant to deal with lol. Vergil can build 1.25 meters in one combo with assists so he’ll always have the option to turn on the juice if he’s playing someone that can reversal his blockstrings (or if he’s just feeling impatient).
Basically he takes some work, but he’s a straight counter to alot of the classic Marvel 3 derp. At the current technology level, he’s looking like a solid A-tier. Counters alot of the top tier, but characters with very specific reversal tools can light him up.
Day 3 opinions
Eh … Strider is good but he is currently lacking the dmg/tools to be top. Needs to up his damage and be scarier without XF to reach top imo. Friend is pulling about 600k with single meter+assist combo’s but ouroboros without x-factor isn’t as scary as it needs to be since it costs 3 meters and only affords 2 or so mixups underneath it (so short) though if your a big it toasts you hard. Really his assist is the best thing he brings to a team. High block-stun, hard knockdown on air-borne opponents, and tracks. Not sure if anchor is really where he’ll end up shining, maybe second is better for him?
Hawkeye is a great Second on any team though I think he is lacking in first or third position because gimlet xx DHC loses it’s potency (or isn’t possible). He has some rough matchups that just by guessing with 2 meters can be won. He has some high/top tier potential depending on team make-up.
Also Vergil is better than i initially gave him credit for. But he isn’t top, high to mid-high. j.2C is fucking stupid, add wesker to a team and it turns into 850k for 2 meters with a combo that builds almost 1.25 so :lame: but that’s why i do it.
Firebrand is very good, people that think he’s mid are wrong. His fireball and speed are unfair. Also every combo automatically corners you for rape mixups that you just can’t block. If he has XF fuck it, put down the controller because you can hardly see him much less block him.
Top 5 - currently no order
Zero - A arguably top 5 vanilla character who is arguably stronger
Dorm - health, damage, options, good on zone, only problem is when he gets rushed
but most people have that problem in this game to be honest and they don't have his health or damage.
Air dash nerf also helped him out as IAD against him can be suicide as chaotic flame is nigh instant.
Viper - Seismo is much stronger in this game thanks to air-dash nerf
and even when you get close you have to worry about EX Seismo which is safe. Also everything leads to a minimum of 800k dmg.
Wesker - he still is valuable for his assist (ups entire teams damage) and is a strong anchor still with dark wesker
Firebrand - mvc2 magneto who can follow behind an amazing projectile.
Next 5 - again no order
Hawkeye
Vergil
Dante - still solid but has problems
Magneto
Strider
Maybe I should give it another try. I only tried it once, against a jump-in, and I successfully countered it. He then proceeded to do Cr.LMHS and punish my counter. Net result: sides switched, Strange killed. I never used that move again.
On a side note, I just thought about something ridiculous. Spencer assist might be the very thing that makes Strange absurd. Think about it. All Strange’s Bnb’s revolve around landing Impact Palm > Two red Grace of Hoggoth’s, and exploding them with Flames of the Faltine for a solid 150-200k damage (I forget how much). Spencer’s Slant Shot assist forces a standing state, so characters with crumples can do two crumples per combo. I did test this in Vanilla, so I’m sure it works. See what I’m getting at? FotF, Call Spencer, MH (Spencer assist hits) xx Impact Palm crumple, do two more GoH’s. Could mean upwards of 700k meterless. I can’t wait to test this.
Im watching the comboratory stream with Yipes and Combofiend, and combofiend is mad as f*** about the she-hulk nerfs, i mean he was really salty, cursing capcom and what not.
On a important note, Hawkeye is looking extremely scary, especially in x-factor, the amount of chip damage is absurd.
Yeah, but is Ammy guaranteed to get the Okami Shuffle in? What if she gets bodied early on? Are you guaranteed of getting the meters for DHCing into Frank? What if your opponent’s characters bite the dust before you get the camera shot in? Should you level up Frank rather than finishing off your opponent’s characters? All these affect the viability of Frank greatly, even more so in tourneys where Wong Factor comebacks happen all the time.
What he said was absolutely true, it’s like the guys at Capcom studied every match video of Combofiend abusing the hell out of She Hulk and looked for ways to get rid of all the stuff that only Combofiend does with her. So Fanatiq basically got his wish, they had nerfed Combofiend.
Hawkeye has always looked scary but notice how whenever Combo was reduced to him as his anchor Yipes could block all day and let Combo chip out his characters, he could chip out the Dante but everytime he ends up getting bodied by the Nova once X Factor is finished. This is a very clear example of the limits of Hawkeye as an anchor.
Rocket Raccoon has the potential to be one of the best characters in the game, but I don’t know if anyone is going to take him to that level. A character with access to teleports, float cancel instant overheads and (pseudo) tri-jumps cannot be bad. He has poor midscreen damage, but his corner combos easily crack 700k with 1 bar; a ROM loop was recently discovered, as well as a Boulder Trap loop.
All it takes is someone to put the time in…who will answer the call?
What do you guys think about Tron? I think they beat her down.
tron is trash.
So… I’ve completely changed my opinion on IM. His hitboxes (all of them) are retarded, and I just discovered that he easily has the fastest tri-jump in the game, like easily, it makes Nova’s ADD jA look slow… and alway confirms (not sometimes like Vanilla) into 730k 1.6 bars everytimes it connects. Plus, all his specials got huge buffs.
good riddance.
so i just asked JW that is hawkeye a good anchor he replied with " yes he is an amazing anchor, he is the new spencer" interesting. seems opinions about this guy spot differ.
Hawkeye, to me, is the definition of “solid” (just like Tasky). So he would probably be good in any spot, I tend to favor him second or third because I like his assist.
The Spencer comparison is because of the BIONIC ARROW. Like BIONIC ARM you can play around it, but it commands a level of respect that helps Hawkeye immensely in that position. One important difference, Hawkeye can’t always XFC BIONIC ARROW for a full-kill (he can sometimes though).
Man, that stuff with his Felicia/Storm/Frank team is nasty. Especially that THC.
I wonder if he’ll swap Frank out for Akuma later down the line. He even said Tatsu can fill the spot of Cart somewhat for his team, and Akuma is a much better anchor anyway. THC probably wouldn’t work, though. Man that thing killed a near full-health Dante in XF1 if I remember correctly.
So apparently Combo dropped Nemesis. Didn’t really seem like his kind of character, now that I think about it. Firebrand seems more likely. Lots of simple but very flexible options to work with.
cheers to capcom for making capcom characters viable in (u)mvc3.
i bet this is what they were thinkin after mvc2:
capcom employee 1: wow damn, capcom characters didnt stand a chance except for strider and he isnt even fully ours.
employee 2: but why strider?
employee 1: lets see what he has; a sword, a teleport, a power up super.
employee 2: fuck it, come mvc3, lets arm our characters with a sword, teleport and possible a powerup super.
and thus mvc3/umvc3 was born.
just look at dante, zero, vergil, strider, wesker (samurai edge is a sword).
strider: the original teleporting sword wielding capcom character.
