Also, we are holding casuals at Galloping Ghost Arcade tomorrow. This will also be streamed thanks to Medina4life. So please tune in to http://justin.tv/medina4life for all your post-evo fighting game viewing needs.
We will be holding Windy City Wednesdays every week at GGA with a tournament once a month and casuals or team tournaments the other days. Hopefully you guys will be able to come visit us there in the near future.
Thanks, and see you at Chicago Heart!
James: Like I said on your fb, I definitely thought you’d make it out of pools too. :\
BTW, I understand people hating Phoenix in MVC3. But I’ll tell you… for someone who doesn’t play the game, it was very entertaining watching people get Phoenix’d on stream at the biggest tourny in the world XD And Viscant’s Mutumbo finger-wag and chapstick powerups were too good haha
Its just that shes a legit 4th character.
Any other character in the game in that 3rd spot when I hit them they are dead and I win the game no matter how much HP they have. Not in Phoenix’s case. You gotta work super hard to try and kill her before they get 5 bars (which happens FAST) and then if they get 5 bars you are pretty much now going to face a 9-1 matchup at the end of a game where you die in 3 seconds because of screen filling and high priority bullshit. Even top players using phoenix still literally just mash shit out just they do it in a dumb/smart kind of way.
In my mind she completely ruins the game making any phoenix team basically a 4v3. Its not fun at all.
It is entertaining to watch however for the sheer stupidity of it.
Yeah I figured I would make it out of pools in at least MvC3 but I am pretty garbage at adjusting to gimmicky players. =(
I don’t care what anybody says, I felt that Viscant would have probably had less of a chance to win EVO without DP. Now, I won’t go as far as saying that Viscant is overrated like some others in the past have said. He’s clearly extremely talented and has a great understanding of Marvel and of his characters as well as matchups against a great variety of teams. I’m not in any way knocking his skill. All I’m saying is that I believe the potential for him to win would have probably been at least slightly less without DP. It’s kinda like when Akuma in the early SF years was so overpowered, he had to be banned, and many extremely great players was losing to him. I think it’s safe to say the same is the case with Phoenix. I noticed that more often than not when he faced really good players, he’d get his Wesker and Haggar knocked out, but by that time, he’d already built 5 meters, and here comes the Phoenix shenanigans. I’m more impressed with the players who got as far as they did into top 8 without using DP.
I understand that Clockwork used Phoenix as well, and didn’t make it to top 8. This does show that Viscant was clearly on top of his game the whole tourney. One still has to execute when it’s all said and done, whether your character is high or low tier. To me, in this instance, it’s not so much a question of execution as much as it is a question of obviously clearly broken Pheonix mechanics. When Pheonix is properly used, her pros with projectiles, teleport trap setups, and extreme godlike damage output far outweigh any cons she may have, such as her low health. When you have high caliber players such as the world’s best consistent winning Marvel player Justin Wong having extreme difficulties with her, that’s quite telling. Even Noel Brown didn’t feel right using Pheonix to win one of the matches he had against Justin. There’s obviously a very fine line between a really good character and a flat out broken character, and there’s little else to say on that point.
Do we have any real way of knowing for certain that Viscant would have won or lost EVO without DP? Of course not, but taking into account all the above, clearly Viscant had a probable less chance of doing so. To be flat out honest, I’ll have much more respect for Viscant if he can show that he can consistently come out on top without a broken character, like Justin Wong, PR Rog, and many other great Marvel players have. It’s clear to me that given that loud hype cheering when PR Rog won a clutch set with Tron’s level 3 grab, it was not only because it was a clutch victory in the finals, but also because people wanted to see DP go down. It was much more quiet when Viscant constantly won with DP. It’ll be great to see how future tourneys play out with Viscant once Phoenix gets nerfed in Ultimate. We’ll just wait and see. If he manages to consistently come out on top afterwards, I’ll give credit where it’s due. If not, that won’t take away his high level of skill, but it can certainly illustrate what I just said about him having a probable less chance of coming out on top without her as she stands in her broken state.
Exactly why I was laughing. I definitely wouldn’t be laughing if I was on the other end of it. And yeah, she definitely hurts the game as she is right now. The game seems to be full of stupidly strong shit, but I don’t think anything really compares to her in terms of character strength relative to the very little brain power and skill she requires.
Yeah, agreed. Phoenix is pretty effin’ retarded. The people that argue, “It’s not like she’s unbeatable” have simply never faced a good Phoenix. Hell, they’ve probably never faced a half-decent Phoenix for that matter. lol It’s nigh-impossible to defend against her when she enters D. Phoenix mode, and even in regular Phoenix mode she’s quite threatening.
The nerf she’s getting in UMVC3 is much needed and will really separate the Joe-Schmoe button mashers from the actual Phoenix players. Likewise, I’m interested in seeing who the “true” Yun players are going to be after his [almost-inevitable] nerf.
I just hope the nerfs and buffs they make in AE aren’t crazy overdone. Ill still be playing fei long though no matter what.
Guile and at very least Wesker here.
Shit… At this point, Guile can’t go anywhere but up knocks on wood.
@ Tonloc, Well said. I feel Viscant was MUCH beter than a lot of other Faceroll Phoenixes, but its still D. Phoenix. Me and Joe were discussing this the other night. I mentioned that I felt that his team was basically less “boo” worthy because he actually did more than just let his other two characters simply feed meter to Phoenix and then just let them die. I normally get angry at that BS too, but I really didnt feel like he “noobed” his way to victory. I would certainly like to see that fight ran back with eiter nerfed phoenix or another character in general. It would definitely be interesting.
Yeah i hope the AE 2012 version doesn’t needlessly nerf everyone and just buffs the characters that need buffing(kind of like mike’s ideal version of sf4 lol)…and get get rid of some of the glitches/weird stuff that is “working as intended” like yang’s wakeup glitch, twin’s wakeup speed(im not sure if there wakeup is faster or their backdashes are just that gdlk), and all the weird yun stuff that has been popping up like that trade sweep combos and the karapalm genei jin that does as much dmg as a marvel combo lol
No argument here. Well said yourself good sir.
Viscant has easily one of the best weskers in MvC3. But still.
In MvC3 you get hit 2-3 times its game over.
With a phoenix team playing proper you have to hit that team 4 times. And that 4th time is almost impossible because of LOLXFACTOR LASERCOMBOS TELEPORTS.
Does anyone know exactly what kind of nerfs Phoenix is getting in UMvC3?
Shes actually still pretty good in the current build of UMvC3
She has to use her Fly mode now too shoot multiple projectiles kinda like Morrigan but not quite as fast.
Xfactor being nerfed in general is a nerf to her although air xfactors works for and against her.
Also The being able to side exchage to take out meter helps vs her.
Oh yeah forgot about that. Also morrigan is getting a meter sucking fireball apparantly.
