First: Thanks to the Japanese 3s scene and Denjin Arcade for inspiring this idea.
Weekly SFIV Danisen battles will be starting next Wednesday May 5th at Latitude 55 from 7:30 PM to 10 PM. This is open to the public, so even if you aren’t a student, come show UCR your SFIV skills. This is solely for bragging rights and fun. All matches will be played on the Latitude X360 consoles (did I mention this is for free?) For those unfamiliar with our format:
Each participant will pick a character they wish to progress through the dan-i ladder ranks. That character will start at 1st Dan (Level 1). The range will be from 1st Dan to 10th Dan, after that special titles will be rewarded. Participants may choose to play as many characters as they want, but points/levels gained with each character will be separated (for example, you can be a 2nd Dan Ryu and a 4th Dan Rose).
Players may only play opponents within a two dan range. Players will be matched up randomly (usually through picking names out of a bag). Each match will be done under standard tournament rules…2/3 rounds, best 2/3 matches. After each match, the winner will gain 1 point and the loser will lose 1 point. After all players are done with their matches, players will be matched up randomly again and this process will be repeated, etc etc. (Note: you may not play the same opponent twice in a day. If you draw a name you already played, you will be asked to draw again.)
Players will be promoted a dan level when they reach +5 points. After each level advance, their points reset to zero. On the other hand, players will be demoted a dan level when they reach -5 points (again, their points will reset to zero after the demotion). Players cannot go lower than 1st Dan 0 points.
So I invite the Inland Empire to come and practice here. Latitude 55 is cool restaurant/hangout on the UCR campus with pool tables (also free to use), 3rd Strike machine, MvC2 machine, and much more. Come show how big your SFIV e-peen really is.

Good luck to you guys trying to revive the UCR scene. Scene was alive and kicking until 2007 when the rest of us graduated, then it was all downhill from there…
Also, where the hell is Latitude 55? I might stop by one of these days whenever I’m in the area.
Latitude 55 is a new restaurant (kinda like a burger joint) built on campus. It has 4 pool tables and about 5 set-ups players can use for SFIV. I think each station cost like…3 bucks a hour or something. I am willing to use my own money (new job wooo!) to sponsor these ranbats. Just trying to get something in place.
During the recent school SFIV tourney, there was quite a few ppl (at least 60), of varying skills. Though I myself hate this piece of shit game, I want to cultivate the fighting game community so my next two years in this ghost town can be a bit more enjoyable. I’ve been to enough tournies in general so I think I have the experience and equipment to run a smooth ranbat.
UCR have some people play Blazblue? Really?
wow, that’s amazing. if you guys are having some gathering with this game, I’ll definately be there.
I helped recording the BB tutorial BD, so I guess I can help new people to learn this game.
I don’t play SF or tekken, but if it’s BB, I’m really good at litchi (I’d even say one of the best in US. lol)
decent with ragna, hakumen (have enough knowledge to help out intermediate players. )
Except arakune, I think I can help all others to newbies.
I hope UCR establish some scene, I’m getting tired with driving at least an hour to have some casuals. haha
oh, and if anyone interested in guilty gear, I can play that game too.
lol I meant to say if you’re that really good black dude at AI who has a mean-ass Litchi.
Anyway, there will probably be no time to play BB at the ranbats. I really want the SFIV tournament to smooth be so I want all setups to be running SFIV. I know, bear with me, here’s how I’m doing BB:
I don’t know if BB has the popularity of SFIV here at UCR (my guess is that it doesn’t)
I don’t know just who actually plays BB at a decent level here. If we were to run BB ranbats now, I want them to be semi-competitive, or else there’s no point.
My plan is to do a small survey to check on people’s interest levels for BB. On the sign-up sheet for SFIV ranbats, there will be a box that ask players if they play BB. Hopefully some players write yes.
I’ll get in contact with the BB players and then invite them to house seshes. This is mainly to check the skill level of the players. If there’s enough good ones, BB ranbats might be a possibility. However, if a lot of them don’t know what they’re doing, then I think teaching them at private seshes is a better learning experience than owning them at a tournament. I plan to do Tekken 6 this way too.
