After thinking about it (can’t sleep) and using it a few times, I think EX SSB is a very poor choice for oki.
- It’s made especifically to punish backdashes and focus backdashes and not much else.
(Sure, it beats standing grab, but you’re an idiot if you do that on wake-up) - Loses to most reversals or goes under them, sometimes giving the opponent a free punish.
- Loses to crouch tech or jab mashing or other silly wake-up options.
- Loses to jumping completely, leading to pain.
- If the opponent does backdash, depending on the character (Chun-Li, for example), not all hits will connect, doing pitiful damage.
- If they all connect, launches enemy pretty far, which is good for creating space or taking them to the corner, but bad if you want to continue pressure.
- Uses meter.
Seems like it would only be viable after extreme conditioning or through sheer luck. To me, best options if you expect backdash are safe jump OS Jet Upper or meaty kidney blow OS Jet Upper, which can both possibly lead to a safe jump setup if they work and are much safer if you guess wrong. If they start focus backdashing, start mixing in throws.
IMHO, it is OK as a 50/50 option of chars that don’t have strong wake up options or grabbers (T. Hawk, Gief even Guy). I have used it and sometimes I get thrown or even stopped with a jab. I still need to improve timing.
If you’re 100% percent sure they’ll try to grab you, go for it. But if you guess wrong and they block, you’re gonna eat an SPD.
Also, turns out kidney blow OS Jet Upper will not catch people with decent backdashes - the Upper will whiff and you’ll be vulnerable. I’m gonna go back to the lab and see if a kidney blow OS LK Duck can leave you close enough (and quickly enough) to grab them during backdash recovery.
Edit: Quick look at the framedata shows that’s not possible.
Anyway, here’s some anti-backdash OSs I’ve tested.
Meaty cr.LK OS cr. MK (Dudley’s awful sweep) works on:
Ryu, Ken, Honda, Gouken, Akuma, Oni, Juri, Abel, Bison, Deejay, Cody, Zangief, T. Hawk.
Special cases:
On Yun, Yang, Sagat, Rufus and Hakan (No oil), the sweep will hit them while airborne, so the knockdown will be techable.
Meaty f.MK OS Sweep works on:
All of the above plus Ibuki (techable), Dudley, Sakura, Dhalsim, Viper, Cammy, Guy, Evil Ryu, Guile, Vega and Adon.
That leaves Makoto, Seth, Gen, Dan, El Fuerte, Chun-li, Rose, Hakan with oil, Blanka, Balrog and Fei, aka the characters with the best backdashes in the game (except for Elf, just OS jet upper against him).
OS with LP/MP MGB
One of these works on everyone
OS with crHK works on more people than crMK iirc
All depends on how many frames it takes for a character to complete a backdash, but yeah, it’s definitely an option too. And OS LP MGB works on everyone.
Point is plenty of better options to catch backdashes than EX SSB.
