Trying to learn GGXrd. Started with SFIV series. Tips?

Topic, basically. What sort of skills can I expect to carry over? What habits have I learned from the SFIV series which I must immediately abolish? I also welcome general tips, strats, advice… anything, really. I’m playing as Sol because he seems like a shoto and I am absolutely a shoto scrub (although Ky also seems shoto-like).

Thanks, SRK!

No tips, but I feel ya. I just DLed whichever GG game came out on Xbox live (I’m pretty sure it’s a decade old) and it’s a lot more different than I expected.

I’ve gotten pretty tired with SF4 as of late so I picked up GG Xrd not too long ago. It’s extremely different. Grabs are one button: forward or backwards heavy slash. They are extremely good, and one of the core mechanics of the game. They come out in one frame and are untechable. jumping isn’t bad in this game. In fact, it’s pretty good. Neutral is much different. You’ll be running and backstepping all the time. Knowing when to go in and back off is key when playing the neutral. Try to avoid attacks more than block. Blocking is a sure fire way to get you killed. Knockdowns are extremely important in this game because you force the opponent to block.I get bodi Just don’t be in throw range when they get up, because if you mistime your meaty you will be thrown, and then the tables will be turned. This game revolves around momentum and mixups. Half of your life can be gone in seconds. I get bodied, and it’s brutal. I recommend looking at Dustloop forums. More for you there.

Thanks, gents. To add insult to injury, I made the brilliant decision to pick up the PS4 version despite not owning a compatible stick, so I get to be a pad warrior until I either swap this one for a PS3 copy or get my hands on a PS4 stick :\

Lots of guides in YT. Go through them, then some specific to the character/s you want to use, then dive in to the action yourself. :3

Xrd has a great challenge(trials) and mission mode to teach you the basics of just about everything, and combos for each character too.

If there is one thing to practice which is unique to these games is instant air dash (IAD). In GG, most of the cast has an air dash. Not only that but if done correctly, you can air dash really low to the ground. This helps with moving around projectiles, pressuring people from different distances etc.

you can in put an instant air dash in a couple of ways. You can hit “up forward, forward” or “up forward, up forward” leave a small gap in between the inputs. Which one you use is up for preferences. I use one method for he left and one for the right because its most comfortable for me.

Outside of that there is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWfk3tOJjaQ

These will take you through the basics of “Anime” games (games with air dashes not named marvel).

Both games have a heavy element of vortex/set play, but are worlds apart mechanically. Just watch all the stuff that everyone else has posted and then go through the game’s tutorials and challenges.

You just described Marvel. Funny that you mentioned that. Seems like SF guys are having a hard time getting into Xrd whereas Marvel players are fitting right in.

Lots of great tips already in this thread. My only suggestion is dont give up and lab it up. Like in any fighting game, know your offensive tools, your defensive tools, and most importantly, your neutral.

I recommend heading on over to dustloop. You’ll find everything your looking for and way more. There’s even a thread explaining how to go from games like SF to Anime/Airdashing games.

Hold up-forward instead of down-back.

This is exactly the kind of stuff I was looking for, thank you all!

Wouldn’t you jump forward then?

Yes especially in corners. I take it he was more or less joking but it has some truth to it. Games like this and even marvel, once you get cornered and/or get into block stun, you will eventually get opened up. Best to avoid being in that situation, hence why movement/neutral is very important in games like these.

this slightly works if your opponent can’t disrespect it. But Game does provide plethora of AUB and air throws is strong in that situation. If your opponent know how to convert from those than it becomes a real bad option.

Some character can out right disrespect it like exp: axl.

other simply don’t allow you an opportunity to do it,exp: millia
