Trying to improve

So a few months ago I made a post about my first day playing online and getting demolished. You guys provided some great advice about how to approach the game mentally and even though I’m still a beginner but I have been winning more and having more fun. I found someone randomly in a player lobby about my same skill level who played Twelve and I had some fun matches with them. So I got two matches from the 10 or so we must have played and would like some tips on things like footsies and not getting grabbed on Wake-up. I accidentally forgot to save a match and exited out of my game but I have trouble fighting Kens who Fierce uppercut a lot. Well, here are the games. (Note: I had a big fail in the game against ken and won only by luck because of a mistimed parry attempt and for wasn’t buffering correctly but I’ve fixed that)

Spoiler

How do you buffer Yun’s supers to cancel them if anyone pLays him. I’ve just been experimenting with different characters.

Elena is a fun character I think

I got so lucky in that second round after getting demolished in the first

Hellooooo? Anyone out there?

Just pick Yun and do lunge punches and dive kicks, or Alex and do stomps, or Ken and do LP DPs. You now know everything you need to know to play online which is where you will be playing for the rest of your life or until you quit.

 that was dark for no apparent reason. I don’t think it’s that simple though. The people I usually find in ranked matches aren’t bad enough to lose to those tactics

Stop hitting so many buttons and pay attention to what’s going on. Point blank sweeps from Chun after the opponent has landed from their jumpin, makes no sense. Block more (no need to parry yet since you’re new, but atleast learn how to block and when to not hit buttons).

Stop jumping back and forth (you did this a lot with Elena but not with Chun for some reason).

Also stop playing many characters. Pick one, stick with it and learn everything there is to learn about that character. Make sure it’s a character you really like, but before you decide, you need to watch japanese match videos of each character played at a high level, to see what they are capable of and if they suit your style.

Yeah I noticed I did that a lot with Chun (the Sweeps after Jump in). I though it would anti-air against jumping but I see that fails a lot. I was playing so many characters to see which ones I like playing. I can’t make my judgement based solely on watching Japanese pro videos (Which I have watched) since I have to take the reins in my hand and see what I like.

It can work as an anti-air on some occasions. My point was that you didn’t really use it as one, you just did it the moment someone got close and you weren’t in blockstun.

The reason you want to watch Japanese players before deciding which character to pick is that generally, if you care about improving your game, the Japanese level is the one to strive for. Whatever gameplay reason(and I say gameplay because there’s many non-gameplay reasons you could have for picking a character) you might have for liking a character might be misunderstood because of your lack of knowledge(for example, picking Alex because you think the stomp move is cool, but in reality it’s an uncommon move to see thrown out by high level Alex players and you will become disappointed when you realize it doesn’t work well as the competition increases).

You take these words back and never say them ever again.

Also Emil, he’s only going to be playing online, so why not just use stomp a bunch since it’ll win him a bunch of games? Yeah it’s not a good move in real life, but he’s not playing real 3S, just OE.

Those weren’t my words. What I said were the people online that face int ranked (which are usually in the upper 20s or rank 0) aren’t bad enough to lose to that type of stuff. You make 3SOE seem like KOFXIII quality net code. Maybe chalk it up to me not knowing every frame of animation of the game, but every match I’ve played with yellow ping or higher is tolerable and I experience rollback or choppieness rarely. meh, No offense but I’d really appreciate it if you gave actual tips but if you can’t then I’d like it if you leave space for those who are willing to help me up my game.

Pick Yun, learn his GJ combos and some basic pressure in it, do divekick 123 shoulder over and over until you get GJ, activate, do your thing, there you go. If it ever stops working, do divekicks over and over. Do random low forward into lunge punch sometimes, it’ll hit most of the time, but if it doesn’t you probably won’t get punished anyway.

If you want actual advice, pick a main, then we can help you.

work on removing the random special moves and normals from your game. go less for “I’m gonna throw this out preemptively and hope it works” and more to reacting to things you are seeing. punish more, guess less.

I think you have a general good starting feel for what Chuns normals are for. That’ll get better over time of course. I’d say don’t fall in love with crouching roundhouse, it’s not as good as the bad players you’re playing against will make it look. back fierce is better and serves the same function you’re using crouching roundhouse for.

if you want to anti air jumpers, you have a lot of good options as Chun - back fierce, standing fierce, parry then roundhouse, oodles of jabs, or just walk backwards and react appropriately as you see his jump develop. depends on what he does, what you should react with. that’ll come as you keep playing. try them all out.

crouching roundhouse can work as anti air but it’s not as good. though responding to those weird jump in jabs is neither here or there - your roundhouse is not a punish in that situation but jump in jab doesn’t get him anything either. he’s going for tick throw I guess but it’s whatever. you won’t really be in situations like that as you get better I think.

Also stay out of the air as Chun. it probably works with online Elena but even online Chun’s air moves are bad. try to go an entire round without jumping, focusing on using your great normals to control space, whiff punish moves, and push the opponent into bad situations. if he jumps at you, anti air. you are a wall named Chun and you can make it so they have to outpoke and outfootsie you to win as your reactions get better.

I appreciate the advice. I’ll keep in mind not to jump as much with Chun. Do you have any advice on what I can do on Wake-up to not get grabbed because even if I’m holding down-back since getting knocked down I get grabbed sometimes. Also, if you’re parrying in the air and the attack hits under you, do you push down or forward to parry if you’re jumping in?

Parry claps

you only ever parry forward in the air. no down parry.
as much as possible try to play without jumping or dashing for a while. just forget that you have those options. when you feel totally in control just walking around you will have a better idea why to dash and when to dash. same for jumping.

wakeup situation is really just about knowing what you can possibly do and then paying extremely close attention to your opponent. when just starting it is a good idea to block MORE than trying to do some kind of reversal, attack, parry, throw, etc. but you still need to do those other things. it’s sort of like with what i described above. if you start by just blocking most often, you will understand more what you’re looking for in your opponent and then how to react appropriately.

you need to start at the very bottom. nothing is below you.

You could watch guides about the very basic features in 3rd Strike on Youtube, such as Overheads, Jump and Throw properties, Tech Throws, Anti-air, etc.
They should refresh your memory about the mechanics in 3S or help you comprehend the game in general.
The videos below are highly recommended. Either you are a Beginner or a Pro, they are both educational and pleasurable to watch.

Finally, you should check RoydRoydRoyd’s channel:

He has uploaded many in-depth character tutorials on Youtube.

Check out the 5 star and gootecks video about the wake up game, that helps explain a lot. It’s on YouTube on the cross counter channel. On my phone at the moment or I’d link to it.

Thank you to everyone who left serious comments. I’ll check out your video recommendations IglooBob and mpikkon. Thanks a lot

Yeah, sorry I trolled you by telling you to pick a main.

You trolled him by saying just do stomps and that he will never play real 3s so why try
