What does Mai being created to be attracted off of specific women have to do with anything? How, exactly, is that “objectification” if, however prominent, it’s not the dominant thing about her? Sure, visually it is, but if you’re going to honestly try to complain about women showing some skin when her fighting style doesn’t exactly permit her to wear tight-fitting clothing, then why stop at Mai? Shouldn’t “we” be stigmatizing any female character with a (realistically) large set of breasts, especially if “we” have Lara Croft on there just because she has large breasts despite having reasonable clothing otherwise?

But, yeah, it would be rather nice if cheesecake-y fan service for arousing purposes only stopped or, at least, slowed down due to how egregious it is. However, like goodm0urning said, it’s a bit of a Catch-22 in that this type of stuff tends to push female gamers away, yet the only way it’s going to stop if more female gamers support games that don’t have it rather than just giving up games entirely. That or becoming conspicuous without being threatening or guilt-mongering.

Food for thought: People have motives when they do things. Sexist/racist/homophobic actions are more likely if sexism/racism/homophobia is deemed acceptable by society. Punishing the actions through law is treating the symptom, not the cause.

I saw ILLsomthing statistics, if they constitute 46% of the over all purchasing power (if so, they aren’t a minority anymore), of that 46%, how many of those female’s are buying games aimed directly at male’s. How many extra CoD, Halo, GoW, Tomb Raider, etc are bought by female’s? companies are going to see that yes, female’s now constitute 46% of the market, but are buying crap that isn’t even marketed to them. And they still are buying games that objectify (if that shit even exists) women, so why stop if all they do is complain yet don’t do anything about it. Women shouldn’t voice their opinions out on the open by ranting. No one want’s to hear that shit, voice your opinion with your wallet’s or by entering the business and doing something about it. Because frankly, you’re doing it wrong if you aren’t using your wallet, or entering the industry to market “female friendly” games to publishers. Sitting there and expecting affirmative action is pretty fucking stupid and does nothing to address the issue, it rather make’s it worse.

P.S, anybody can raise a lot of money for dumb causes. Her making money doesn’t dictate that there is a lot of people interested, it show’s that there are people interested. If there was real movement of people who where really interested in what this blowhard has to say, you can bet Activision or EA would have picked up on this and pumped real money into her Kony scam.

1. I never expected or demanded to be “coddled” by anyone. I think it’s odd and reactionary for a response to one woman bitching about what she doesn’t like in games to be construed “all women demand to be coddled.” From what I know, this woman isn’t even asking to be coddled or demanding that things be changed. She’s just pointing out tropes that exist and pontificating on why that might be. I just pointed out that there is a number of “us females” participating, period. “Stop being a minority” is some great advice, though. That could fix the problems of a lot of people. You must be super smart.

2. 46% is still a minority in this case (a binary), but it’s also a very significant number – which means some companies who primarily target male audiences might realize that there is a profit to be made in marketing to females (no apostrophe there). Many won’t, and will still make money. Those that do will probably make more money. There will always be games being marketed to you, so it doesn’t really effect you, personally, if some woman on the internet doesn’t like the games you like. EVERYONE voices their opinions out in the open by ranting, and nobody wants to hear it, but it’s part of the internet.

3. And no, not everyone can raise that much money on Kickstarter. I’ve seen a lot of Kickstarters fail to make their goals over the last few years, dumb and otherwise. In general, “e-feminists” on the internet are JUST AS CHEAP as everyone else on the internet, trust. They rant because it’s free to do so, but if they’re called upon to open their wallets for something, they’ll hesitate. Especially if they aren’t getting something directly out of it.

You’re deluded if you think all game companies are disdainful of the female market and WOULDN’T welcome selling to them. Do I think this woman’s video rants are going to be effective? No. In fact, I’m not interested in watching them because I don’t feel like she’s going to tell me anything I don’t already know. But I do think the reaction to her project on both sides (those that ran to give her money, whether or not it was the buzzwords she used or out of empathy or agreement or whether it is the outrage of those who are pissed off at what she’s saying and that she did get support) is fascinating, and in some regards chilling. The fact that she reacted to being threatened with violence and harassed at length for saying there was sexism in games by becoming MORE vocal about her point instead of slinking off and being quiet is not necessarily a bad thing. The money she earned could have been put to better use, sure, but that there’s noise being made on all sides shows that there is definitely an issue that warrants being looked at.
