The highly-anticipated crossover Street Fighter X Tekken has exceed well above Capcom’s expectations, selling 5 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling fighting game of 2012 so far, and the best-selling fighting game since Super Street Fighter IV, which sold 6.3 million copies worldwide. It is also not only the second best-selling Capcom game of the year after Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, which sold 5.8 million worldwide, but also the second-best selling game of the year overall. It topped the NPD charts for March by selling 3.2 million copies, beating out EA’s Mass Effect 3 by more than a million.
As a result of SFXT’s success, the underperforming Namco fighting game Tekken 6 jumped from 840K copies to 1.4 million, making it the 8th fighting game this gen to break the million barrier. It had the biggest sales boost for a fighting game since Super Street Fighter IV. Meanwhile, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, which will be available on Sept. 11, has a pre-order sales of 91K, an all-time high for the Tekken series. Looking at its pre-order sales, it’ll be interesting to see how much TTT2 will sell.
As for the other fighting game releases this year, Aksys Games’ BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend has sold 2.9 million copies since its release, making it the best-selling installment in the BlazBlue series and the second best-selling fighting game of the year. The sales of BBCSE adds a series total of 6.7 million, which makes it the 4th best-selling fighting game franchise worldwide after Tekken, Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. However, Namco’s Soul Calibur V did not fare well, only selling 87K since its release, which is a far cry from Soul Calibur IV’s 710K and is the worst selling retail game of the year. Digital fighting game releases fared worse as Konami’s Skullgirls and Sega’s Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown only sold 42K and 53K copies respectively.
