The more I see that design, the greater it pisses me off. I mean, the character speaks to the Bay awesomeness hard on. The name alone is what you would think a Michael Bay character would be. This thing basically looks like a bad representation of G2 Sideswipe. Most of the other character design interpretations (sans for Prime flames) I didn’t really mind. For a character named Hot Rod, this looks rather tepid.
Meh. I’m kinda used to the movie bayverse TFers looking ugly as sin. There have only been a handful of the total bayverse designs that i ever liked. Everybody else looked like a walking pile of scrapmetal.
Blackout from the first movie is one of the few examples i can think of, that i really liked.
^^ Nope! Looks like an insecticon cos-playing as Hotrod lol.
The designs from AOE I didn’t find terrible. They had a lot more character than some of the others from the previous movie. I think the problem is that these designs don’t translate in any way to a toy design. All of the toys from AOE (sans Hound, Evasion Prime, and Bumblebee) just had chunks of car hanging off. ROTF Prime (love of hate) was an impressive movie design and they found a way for the mainline figure to transform in an almost 1:1 replication. The new design is cool, but there is no possible way for that to become a toy. Other than the pipes, you really can’t tell what the alt mode is.
I have a huge problem with Drift. Why would a character that is engrossed in Japanese culture have an alt mode that is of German design? They couldn’t have used a GTR?
Either one of two things.

To be honest I kinda dig it also. Reminds me of a mashup of TF Prime version of Megatron and Ultron. They have redesigned the battle mask as its a lot smoother now (doesn’t look like a vagina anymore).
Optimus has been ~32’ or so since TF2007, and the leaders of factions in Transformers tend to have a height advantage in most continuities. Also, I think Megs is actually a bit shorter now than he was before.
I know canonically Optimus and Megatron have always been among the larger bots to designate their leader status, but I don’t recall the height discrepancies being that large, even in the previous films.
Although that may be because the camera never stands still long enough for anyone to get an accurate idea of how tall anyone is, let alone specific details of their designs.
