Training without competition

Well I go to the Sagat forum pretty regularly. I was actually talking about some more detailed things I should work on…such as links, fighting off certain strategies, etc.

Playing Sagat in P, I would definitely work on parry into tiger uppercut. In any groove, but especially C, his tiger raid super combos off almost anything. C is great because you always can throw out that lvl2 tiger raid xx tiger uppercut. Practice on how to combo tiger uppercuts off standing jabs. That upped my game a lot recently, since everytime I catch someone with a standing jab I pretty much get the tiger uppercut for free, and then I get the knock down, which starts a mixup game… empty jump into tiger raid is too good.

P/K sagat has the most reliable whiff/parry punish ability with fierce xx super tiger shot and far s.LK xx tiger shot

super reliability: qcbqcb+P > qcbqcb+K > qcfqcf+K > qcfqcf+P
super damage: qcfqcf+K > qcbqcb+K > qcfqcf+P > qcbqcb+P

work on knowing when to dash, learn your options up close, definitely know every character who can duck s.LP, as it’s your best up close attack if they can’t, umm… learn to cancel dp+HP off of c.LK on reaction. also the buffers for far s.LK xx qcbqcb+P, far s.HP/c.HP xx qcbqcb+P, c.MK xx qcbqcb+K, those are the most important.

edit: ground ranges far s.MK > far s.LK > far s.HP > c.HP > c.HK > c.MK > c.MP > c.LK > s.LP
ignore s.MP, c.LP, far s.HK, they are pointless

meaty attacks c.MP, c.HP (c.LP can be used to fake a c.MP and bait the enemy)

zone with far s.LK, c.HP, far s.HP, far s.MK, in that order… avoid using far s.MK vs C/A/N and make sure its blocked, faster characters like chun and cammy can hurt you hardcore for whiffing one. same thing goes for fierces but on a smaller scale.

Woah that was some awesome material Ragnafrak…it’s been awhile since I’ve heard some good output!

thanks for the props deus, you’re the mvc2 player who plays MSS-drones right? i’m sure you would own me for giggles if i ever seriously get into mvc2.

check my first post, i kinda already did…

one big thing is to watch a lot of match vids. if you want to learn C-sagat well, watch choi, shiro, dan, etc play him. want to learn P-kyo? watch makoto and desiken. for the teams you listed, gee-o, lifetimeboy, daigo, dan, choi, makoto, etc would all help big time. once you see how good players utilize their best characters, you learn a whole lot. the go for broke hub is a great place to get vids, look in the fighting game discussion for the thread.

I didn’t know this until Arturo gave me some tips, but Sagat far s.HK isn’t pointless. It’s important to mix it up as anti-air against P and K groove.

-far s.HK
-walk under
-d.LK as they land
-jump back HK
-jump up HP
-tiger uppercut

As you can see, I only use tiger uppercut about 1/6th of the time anybody jumps in on me. Against players like VDO, who jump in with practically no fear, can parry every hit of your tiger uppercut, and then hit you with a 90% death combo, I uppercut even less. Give him the foot to the groin with far s.HK instead.

Almost every single match I ever win against Blanka, it’s because I hit him with d.LK, s.LP, s.LP, d.MK xx tiger cannon combo btw. I would practice that the most if anybody here wants to have a beastly Sagat. Stupid thing does like 10,000 damage. It’s like paint the fence without actually having to do any work.

Thanks you guys, so far the thread is helping out quite a bit. Popo…thanks for listing off those teams/players, I’ll look into that.

Kcxj…S.hk is pretty good as an anti air, I’m pretty sure it’s almost impossible for K groovers to benefit from a JD off of a far s.hk…however what do you think about doing c.hk for anti air?

This combo is tuff!

c.lk, s.lp, s.lp, c.mk xx low tiger cannon

Any tips that anyone can give linking the c.mk?

It’s a matter of timing, that really only comes with practice. Watch the animation… if you press the button and it’s blocked, try it a little bit earlier next time. But if it doesn’t come out, you pressed it too early. You want to get in the middle. If you go at it long enough you’ll get it.

Something fun to do…

Training mode, play against the CPU with the Dummy on Parry all.

lol, i miss VDO, you guys are lucky to have him up there:sad:.

When I used to play CVS2 a lot a year ago, I barely had any practice, and I can only play 3 times a month max in the arcade, and I could only practice combos and such at most 4 times a week for 30 min. I was a SF2WW and CE prodigy back in the day though, so I guess without that much practice I could hold my own. I still suck though.

Character knowledge and footwork are important. Make sure you know the major characters of CVS2, their speed and all of their moves so you can play good footwork.

Thanks inverse…I actually just got done playing a couple hours with Lifetimeboy and Jalbert my self, and it seems that what you had just said is a MAJOR factor in actual game play…

If I had EVER whiffed a s.hk/hp with my Sagat, LTB’s Cammy could s.rh xx level 3 me almost 90% of thet time…

looks like i gotta go back to learning footsies…

“P groove: Kyo/Cammy/Sagat/Blanka (My main team)
C groove: Sagat/Chun Li/ Guile (Team I want to get good with)”

If I were you, I’d drop Kyo from that team until you have good footwork.

Last thing I’ll tell you is to pick a team you’re comfortable with and STICK WITH IT.

Hate to break it to you, but it’s hard to have good footwork when you have no competition.

here’s the website on CVS2 matches. Have fun

Yea you couldn’t be anymore right. However I know for a fact that my Kyo is pretty solid, and my footsie game isn’t THAT bad…LTB is just extremely good at it. Hopefully with more experience I’ll get to learn ranges of pokes better.

And Cheester, thanks for the videos man!

actually thats the other deus . i was the guy that was sitting a row behind you during finals. you turned to me when daigo did his parries on justin and something like “did you see how he jumped up for the last hit?” or something like that.
