I’m really liking playing footsies with s. lk since it always combos into hcb+fp or dp+rh no matter how far away you are so every time they get touched by it they must take 138 damage. People have to respect it because it is a 4 frame move that reaches quite far and is easily bufferable. It makes it pretty hard for people to control the space in front of them. After people get counterpoked by s. lk xx special enough times it makes all of your other buttons more useful along with the almighty “walk forward”
As for the s. mp, s. lk yes it’s for range reasons. It’s a hit confirm so we’re not looking to just autopilot the button out regardless. s. mp has to hit quite close for s. lp to land afterwards, not the range you’ll be using s. mp at in many cases. If you’re close enough to do s. mp, s. lp as a blockstring, you’re close enough to do s. mp, s. mp which is still a 3 frame trap. You’re even close enough for the 2nd s. mp to hit on CH while still being in range of s. mk allowing a CH s. mp, s. mk, c. rh, s. rh target combo to reach if that 2nd mp hits on CH.
That’s definitely what she should be using Ex Kunai for it’s true.
But what I want to know more is, what do I do with the normal kunais, especially air ones. I feel when I throw one I’m at a disadvantage when I land, even on hit.
@carups I can hit confirm it about 60 percent in training mode, but in actual matches its more looking for counter hits, whiff punishing or buffering. Still get a good success rate even with just that. I’m used to hit confirming one hit stuff or committing to things that one hit confirm based on what the opponent does.
@M00nTiger Looks good so far. EX kunai is definitely like plus in the teens or something stupid like that. The only thing is that when people catch on to EX kunai, it’s really just a big long window for people to V Reversal so we’ll have to come up with some things that can beat V Reversals or just use it as an incentive to make people burn their V Gauge.
What’s great about Ibuki is each day I spend in training mode with her I find stuff that makes her a little better. I’m still not QUITE sold on her being strong but there’s still more days to go, so I’ll continue because I’m having a lot of fun discovering new things.
I’ve been having tons of fun with her and don’t plan on stopping my time in the lab with her anytime soon but I still feel like she’s limited in a sense. It seems like her best qualities are the fact that she can really do some burst damage but so far all I’ve seen have been some questionable resets and they’ve always required either bomb, ex, or both. I might just have to test more stuff with the resets but I’m not completely sold on the idea that they’re gonna be good enough to carry her for most games not to mention at how much they’re actually costing. Still she’s tons of fun and this is SFV so even if she’s bad doesn’t mean she’s not viable it just means she has to work a lot harder. Luckily I do feel like her buttons are good enough in neutral not the best but she has tools to work with.
She’s the HARDEST to play of the 4 DLC chars so far. Balrog seems decent, Alex is maybe not the best but pretty good. Guile is really hard to gauge. It’ll take a lot of work for Ibuki to be the best atm, simply because of her low health and relatively low damage. But she can pick you apart with her s. lk xx hcb+fp which alone can make her nasty. I’ve been preferring to not use her ex moves, as good as they are, because I like s. lk xx dp+k xx super.
Also her v skill is so good, so so so good. I tap lk’s in front of people a few times, then BOP.
You don’t need bombs or EX for Ibuki. If you do you aren’t experimenting with all of her tools yet. Her s. lk xx special is great, her kunai is easily the best projectile in the game, her f+rh is great, she’s got some good frame data. She’s a murderer against fat characters where you can do c. lk, s. lp target combo, her s. rh counters a shit ton of other characters good standing pokes.
She has a LOT of stuff but you can’t just use a few things and be basic and expect it to work. It’s going to take work, more work than any of us have put in so far. But Ibuki is good. Like EVO top 8 good (maybe not this year) but it’ll take a special person to make it happen which probably won’t be any of us on here unfortunately hehe. Keep playing her and trying new stuff.
Luckily I only know how to play hard characters so hard isn’t a thing for me. I first started playing fighting games competitively with 3S Ibuki, used Viper and Ibuki in SFIV, used a bunch of complicated characters in Marvel 3, used Chipp in GGXX and before Ibuki was using SFV Chun. Which most consider SFV Chun to be the most execution heavy character in the game.
SFV Ibuki is hard to play for this game, but compared to anime game characters or other hard to play characters in older SF games, she’s more straightforward than them for sure. You guys wouldn’t wanna learn A3 Guy or MVC2 Strider Doom. I remember people telling me you literally had to go to college to learn Strider Doom.
Easy characters are harder for me to learn because there’s less things to do with them so I get complacent. It’s just a lot more practice 1 kick 1,000 times with them.
Everyone likes the EX kunai’s here so… Anything xx qcf+pp, qcf+mk, b+mp. You’ll be changing sides with them and then doing b+mp in the other direction. After that you can either cancel the 2nd hit of b+mp with command dash and arrive on the other side yet again, or just do b+mp and do a regular dash to arrive on the same side. It’s not exactly easy to see. Try it in training mode. It’s not an invisible reset but it’s just the kind of thing to throw someone off once.
The best DLC character? Yeah I do. She has a 3 frame jab and an EX reversal so she’s already fundamentally a level above the other characters. The only character without a 3 frame jab or meterless reversal that’s really good is Nash. That’s really only because his neutral game is nearly unmatched and can run away from other characters neutral games and has a 2 bar V Trigger that lets him instantly drop on your neutral game. Alex, Guile and Rog I don’t think are going to get anything comparatively as powerful in their neutral or pressure game.
She’s a character that when people figure out all of her movement options will be pretty much impossible to zone for long periods of time. She’s not going to be like Mika where Tokido will be able to regularly keep her out for entire rounds. She IS going to get in and it’s just a matter of can you kill her before she kills you. She’s a true rushdown character with footsie character level walk speed and a bunch of options to evade or stop fireballs.
I’m not even worried about whether or not she’ll be the best character in the game. There’s going to be new characters coming out monthly and old characters getting further discoveries where that will be hard to make a judgment on. Will she be a character that people will be saying “damn she’s pretty strong” in a few months? Yeah I think so.
I’ve been testing the air normal kunai and outside of sweep range you can do an immediate kunai after you jump. You land the moment it hits, I tested this with 3frame buttons. Birdie necalli balrog etc… and my 3frame win every time… the spacing isn’t hard at all.
The main issue I’m having is when I do this and I get in ibuki isnt really scary. She gets nothing ATM that I know of after grab. So they just sit there
I like regular air kunai when I have my opponent near the corner and land s. mk. c. rh. s. rh target combo. Cancel into qcf+rh and then a quick qcf+lp air kunai hits meaty. If it hits you can combo into s. mk and do it again but the timing is pretty sharp.
@“DevilJin 01” I forgot to test VReversal. Thanks for reminding me! I just tested it and you can punish her VReversal. If they VReversal after the 1st kunai hit, their VReversal will beat Ibuki. But, if they VReversal the exploding part, she can go through with MK Dash and punish with st.mp, st.lk xx whatever. You have to commit to the MK Dash though, so your reads gotta be on point. This was tested with Chun’s VReversal.
Oh damn EX Raida is projectile invinicible?? I figured she would have at least one truly invincible option. This bitch is not getting zoned out after like a couple months.
Great tips in here. I also main Chun and decided to pick up Ibuki since I mained her in 4. I’ve been spoiled by Chun’s buttons. But I’ve found trying to play Ibuki more patiently and whiff punishing has been more successful for me than when I go crazy. I just have trouble remembering all of her tools in every situation, but this is only day 2 of me playing the character. Just have to remind myself not to get frustrated
you can reload kunai as an ender but sharper opponents will punish you for it. I find the best time to reload kunai are after using hp raida as an ender since it pushes the opponent back giving you ample time to reload. if you’re fullscreen away and a have a hard time getting in, reloading kunai kind of “forces” the opponent to get in on you similar to how ppl want to get in on mika when she uses her v skill. You need to space it right to use this though and it depends on the opponent you’re playing against.
