TournamentWars Final @ Bloody Knuckles - 02/28/10

At this point, when you’re in such a high-emotion environment like, oh I dunno, A BAR, I think swearing is the norm. No different from any other sports bar.

I’m also in the boat where you should say whatever you want in that kind of environment. However, if Frank is looking to bring this to a broader audience, maybe at the VERY least, commentary should be kept PG-13. Crowd reactions are never going to be regulated at a place like a bar. But if there’s some sense of “presentable material” that needs to be brought, it should at least be done at the commentary level.

I’ll tell you this, though: if you want a bunch of tipsy/drunk dudes in a bar to not swear at all, they’ll probably tell you to fuck off.

I’m really digging the commentary like it is now, but it could be even better if you balance out the professionalism with someone who shit-talks and makes highly inappropriate jokes.

TRACE LOL

i really enjoyed elliot and nolans commentary on the tdp vs wolfpack match. i thought you guys matched up very well together.

frank, kk, brent and shawn i still need to watch the matches you commentated on and ill try to keep my drunk ass off the mic ahahahaha

^Jacob I’d like to hear your drunk ass on the mic along with the less drunk more in game analyst stylings of frank/shawn/nolan/elliot/brent. It’d be a good combo. Relative game info+crazy drunk shit talking.

Personally I kinda want to see people in front of the camera after a match lol, like Kriang Krai’s spat, woulda been tight to see again.

Haha! Yeah, I thought your name was spelled “Phetomsou” until I checked FB the next day. My bad dawg.

I see what you mean about the camera, though. I was thinking more like it would show the “aftermath” of the match, like if people shook hands or somebody started trash talking, the camera might catch it. But hey, if it looks bad, it looks bad.

Lee: Point taken. I wouldn’t want or expect there to be censorship at all for the crowd.

Edit: Matt and I agree, also

I think it’s good to shoot for a certain level of professionalism in doing the commentary. Producing good commentary and good videos to match really shows that we care about what we are doing, and trying harder to create higher quality videos will show other people that this is more than just guys drinking and playing Street Fighter.

Frank has been putting a lot of work into this to make it a real league for the NW, and when it comes down to it, the videos and commentary are some of the only things produced from all the work. We all have a good time, and that is the point, but the videos and announcing are the only things we can really show to others to let them see what we are doing and why it is important (ie. why they should invest in it.) It’s the evidence that the Tournament Wars exists and matters.

It is also a chance for anyone who would like to try their hand and get some experience at announcing or MC’ing to do so, and possibly turn that into something else for themselves as well.

I know you can’t take it to seriously, (otherwise its just boring) but it should definitely be something more than random people jumping on the mic during a match having unrelated conversations. It should be something that adds to the video and the matches. In short, Tournament Wars is a real, professionaly run league, and the commentary is part of Tournament Wars, so it needs to match.

I would like to try more commentating. I enjoyed it!

Wow lots of posts! Time to start answering questions =]

I would like to not have the commentators get cut off after a match is over with, definately not a minutes worth of shit where people have to stare at Ryu’s win pose. But like a 5-10 second warp up from both commentators, and lead into the next match. Of course this is tough because the players are really trying to get down and play.

The commentary. Yes I would like to keep it professional. Swearing will happen, cause I mean I know how each of us all fucking talk. To Trace’s comment about how no one’s going to watch it outside of Seattle, let alone SF…

We had 2 guys from TX there last Saturday, and they enjoyed themselves and really liked the idea.

We have MarkMan coming up soon for vacation and I’m really trying to have him come check it out.

There are people that are suscribed to the TournamentWars Youtube channel that I don’t know.

There’s people on facebook that aren’t involved with SRK or Team Seattle asking about TournamentWars.

And Ghrrk mentioned to me that he was talking to his coworker about TournamentWars, and once it was brought up his coworker was like “Oh yeah I’ve heard about that.”

SeattleVersus is getting more hits now that updates are going, and there are TournamentWars articles, and a link to our website on there. So the audience is expanding.

To put it bluntly, I think the more swearing there is, the more it sounds like shit. Granted a few words will get in, but we don’t need it to be like

OH SHIT NIGGA THESE MOTHER FUCKERS ARE GOING BUCK MOTHER FUCKING WILD TDP ARE BITCHES YAK YAK YAK YAK YAK

I know that’s the extreme end of it. But also, commentating is something that I would like to get into more…up to the point that maybe I can get on to commentating at EVO in a few years. So the best way to show what I have to offer, is TW’s right now.

I honestly wouldn’t like to see people walk in front of the camera, but I mean come on with the emotions and tension going on in some matches, it’s going to happen.

Also Jeff I took down the Mickey vs Ghrrk video, commentary was way off (by about 10 seconds).

The big issue that I’m having with the videos right now is, I have two guys that are both doing awesome jobs. Mac with the visuals and promptness of having the vids out as soon as possible. Jeff with the slightly better quality, and of course the commentary. I’m just noticing that there’s a split on views mainly due to them being on two pages.

I’d really like to have all TW’s matches on the TW youtube site.

To Mac and Jeff, I really want to find a way for us to work together so that we can take Mac’s promptness and visuals, along with Jeff’s quality, and commentary, and just get on the same page. There are players coming to me saying that having the matches on two different channels is a bit tacky.

To B0kkin, Paul Lee, and Mike. I’m going to move your match against Team Shenanigans up to this week if you guys don’t mind. FATS vs The Untechables had to reschedule, and I need to fill in the fight card. Please get back to me ASAP.

About the commentary, I’m gonna put in my 2 cents one more time because I know how overlooked it gets…if you think it’s cool, then great, but if not thats cool too…

I see a lot of talk about what should be done about commentating and who commentates, how it should be done, etc. etc. etc. First and foremost, I would suggest that people kinda STOP making comments on HOW to commentate. This is Frank’s project, and he’s in charge of it. It’s great to give your 2 cents (like I’m doing) however at the end of the day it’s Frank’s decision.

With that, the problem with letting numerous people commentate with a not so sturdy hand lets people think that anyone and everyone is up to commentate. I personally know that Frank is trying to take TW to places different then just the Seattle scene. I said it before, and I still stick to the opinion, that there should SET people who commentate in order to get better at it and practice at it. There’s a reason why Yipes commentates during NYC tournaments. And there’s a reason why Gootecks is the commentator at SoCal’s events…it’s because they have a niche in commentating that they are VERY good at. I understand that people want to try their hand at commentating, but you gotta realize that this isn’t an open invite…(once again my opinion doesn’t count though, just Frank’s).

With that, Frank I’d encourage you to gather a handful of people who YOU think are going to do well in commentating. The point is that good commentary mixed with an entertaining joke here and there is what is REALLY needed. It’s not about the Seattle shit talk, it’s not about trying to be funny…as said before a certain amount of professionalism is needed to commentate and NOT everyone has it. So with that, take it or leave it, just my suggestion.

Frank, I need to check with Paul and Carlos, but I’m sure it won’t be a problem.

Well you guys will be there playing RESET DEMON?!, so I was going to see if we can squeeze in another match to lighten the load for Nov. 7th.

^yeah I’m down for that. We have to be there already because of our other match. (going to ask paul but I’m sure he’ll be okay with that for my same reason)

God, I’m so feelin SF4. All those casuals/MMs this weekend were my fix for the week.

commentating = 2

one guy who knows sf4 and one guy who hypes. am i wrong?

No that’s about right. In football that’s how it is. Someone who does the play-by-play, and someone who does extra insight/sidebars/hypeman, etc.

Definately for commentating I have three man team that I want in that Chair no matter what:

Me, Elliott, or Mandel. (2 people at a time of course)

I’m going to have to like decide on who else to pick. I don’t want too many cause like Mickey said it’s preventing us to polish our style and everything. But with the ppl mentioned above…

who will commentate the TDP vs The Untechables match? So I have to take that into consideration too.

Like I mentioned earlier, I’d love to work on commentary with you guys. I kinda gave it a whirl last time and I thought it was a lot of fun. All up to you of course but after listening to myself I have an even better idea of how to sound and things to mention.

I don’t know I can’t commentate for shit but if it just random talk im down for that or I need to be superhyped IE. Brent’s matches my commentating was DOPE! haha

Speaking of commentary - Jeff do you have the commentary for Round 1 Week 1 Shenanigans vs Jurassic match?
