I think the big disagreements people have with your rule set is that you have eliminated parts of the game because you think they benefit runaway and/or are random. Which is either not true, or not what is generally accepted in a competitive environment.
Runaway is a real tactic and should not be nerfed by your ruleset
Dealing with Items and Stage hazards != random and is an extra skill that is part of the game, and if what Ive been seeing and thinking about the characters and their designs in implicit in the balance of the game.
If you use Timed, then you fix any time issues. YAY!
Then you also run into the problem of using the lakes in Franzea and Sandover to dodge any sort of fighting. It is increasingly hard to hit someone while they are swimming. And they just have to get out and land on the ground to reset the drowning timer.
Because you can’t do that on every setting? The difference is that the match eventually ends if it is timed.
Some of the items and stages and/or hazards should be banned in tournament. The freeze bomb has AOE and leads to free super , that multi-hitting grenade thing, the bats are annoying as fuck. As for stages Sandover village camping in the water is lame, loco roco stage is just fucked up, and Resistance stage with those time bubbles are cheap as hell.
Personally I’d like to see items and hazards off but I guess some people like the randomness.
BTW chatting with some of the Superbot people and Sackboy is definitely getting nerfed lol.
But none of those are random. The items need to be picked up and there’s more than enough time to react to them. You can punish people for camping in the water, and Nefarious’ bubbles give you a cue a mile away before they even pop out.
Pretty much what JohnGrimm said. I ran an adhoc tournament last Tuesday and was like “Wait… what? You can’t do stock and time? You’ve got to be shitting me.”
I’m not really sure what they were thinking. This is like… babby game development 101 here.
I think I agree that Timed is the way to go, even though it works against the “better at not getting killed than killing” characters, like Jak.
Would it be silly to just play stock/kill limit and the tournament itself has a timer on the outside of the game?

It certainly feels silly.
Yes quite silly indeed.

My opinions you should leave the items and stage hazards on as they are crucial parts of the meter management in this game, if throws and character specific attacks are the only ways we may run into issues of balance (which already seems like an issue). Stage Hazards aren’t random, they are on a time basis and always telegraphed to the players if your not paying attention to Hades and get stunned for a free kill that is on you not paying attention.
As for which modes i haven’t tested all the modes in each scenario but:
FFA - time
2v2 - kill limit
1v1 - stock
I don’t believe there is a timed stock but if there is i would of used that for 1v1 instead
