Queeeeee? What happened in that instance? Juicy/shady details revealed?
You seriously don’t know?
I don’t follow top players or general tourney stuff. Never played a game for the sole purpose of going to tourneys, and have no intention of doing so. This is news to me.
I thought so too.
It’s whatever it’s their money, but sucks for the vierwer. Vut esports has given us one thing, and that’s so much extra exposure to top players, that have quite a good reason to invest in their image, splitting the pot will not help their image.
Maybe that’s just wishful thinking.
Weren’t people stripped of seeding points for similar behavior in the past?
IIRC, he’s talking about how the drama/rivalry between Jago and Mike Ross was staged so they’d get more money and Arturo exposed them

I dont care who gets the money or splits, just give us matches where the top players are playing at their best. I love watching MarlinPie but I hated seeing him troll with his MODOK team at 8otB even if it was still pretty good.
If they split the pot after the matches were done then I don’t care. If they agreed to split it before the matches then I do think it’s BS. Filipino Champ was talking to us on this last weekend saying that yes, you do play differently when there is something on the line. Agreeing to a split before the matches takes away the need to “win at all costs” since there’s no longer anything substantial on the line.
It is an issue. It’s also an unavoidable consequence of offering cash prizes. It’s rational to collude in a competition instead of risking a lower payout, but it ceases to be a competition once that agreement is made. Amusing given all the rhetoric about competitive gaming here. Anyone who buys that 100% is a mark, imo.
I think it was like ncr, Justin threw. Match to give noel brown a higher seeding point. I thought it was stupid or fake like " Hey look Justin wong got a yellow card so you know Im serious " Kind of thing ya know?
But anyways… how many people here have won a legit tourney or made top 3 even? Fuck the stream monsters honestly because not ever tourney is streamed… so tell my again why all you johnny doughnuts opinions matter?

I’ve won/topX’d a shit ton of events in non fighting games and it happens all the time. It’s actually a lot shadier in shit like YGO than it is with fighting games, unless there’s behind the scenes shit I don’t know about. It’s a nonissue, or at least an extremely low priority one IMO.
Why on earth would you, as a winner, split the pot after winning?
As others have said, Seth wrote all those articles originally, Ponder just re-posted some of them. Seth’s writing style is inimitable!
Because you agreed on it before hand.
Omg yugioh is terrible with pot splitting… top 8 are usually 3-4 team mates and they split. IMO splitting in a fighting game tourney isnt that bad because its not like All of Eg makes top 3 in every major and says fuck it lets split. Usually splits are top 2 honestly and you dont always split with friends. Ive split just because after 7 straight sets I dont feel like a risk of 20%-30% payout so I rather go 50/50

Pot splitting is one thing but intentionally throwing a match in the finals should get you penalized big time.
Thats why Wolfkrone is a bosss
… That’s the same as splitting the pot before the matches are done.
Basically if the TO doesn’t allow splits in the rules, players can do it anyway except then they have to be shady about it.
For anyone who doesn’t know why that article was written, around 10 years ago there was an epidemic of pot splitting. There was about a 3-6 month period in this area were no finals were played, not even fake finals, no finals at all. Groups of players came to tournanents with the sole purpose of getting to winners/losers final and not playing each other and attendance dropped like a rock after a while.
There is practically no way to enforce it though, even if you make the players play and you know a players main and secondary character/team there is no rule that forces them to pick those characters no matter how high the stakes are.
P.S. Man, I miss the days when an SRK mod could write a featured article suggesting the slashing people’s tires.
The outcome of the tourney ceases to have any meaning in a tourney with a cash incentive. If they weren’t colluding, the match would be about who’s getting paid more. They aren’t going to play their best or care about the “real” outcome since the ‘prestige’ of winning a video game tourney evaporates with both players knowing that there’s no real consequence to either outcome. If only were a way to track tourney standings…
