I still think a ranking system makes sense, I dont see a lot of people commenting about it. If we had a ranking system where all the road to evo events (plus some others) were tracked, losing to someone becomes a liability, even if you collude, which creates an incentive to play for real, even if you split the pot.
I think if we had a ranking system, the highest ranked players get better seeding at majors. It could be anything though, I just think a ranking system of some kind is the way to go.
Of course this will require more organization, but I dont consider that to be a bad thing
@Vegaman - If you don’t agree with the solution, then what is your suggestion as an alternative?
Remembering that TO’s being able to make judgements on collusion and punish if necessary is not new, rather with this announcement they are reminding people that it is there whilst standardising it a bit more, I think it is the natural first step, not resorting to more hard-line measures such as character locks in the first instance.
I can understand some people’s concerns about it (e.g. picking an alt character = you colluding brah?) but I think we have to trust the TO’s not to be that paranoid, see how the next few events that can enforce this go and take it from there. If too many harsh judgements happen or too many Grand Finals get ruined, then that’s when those involved have gotta think OK this is clearly not working, we’re gonna have to look at more hard-line measures to combat this e.g. character locks, single elimination format
Imagine if the crowd got to vote on a possible collusion situation involving ChrisG?! No way he’s winning that battle!
Can’t see that ever possibly happening to SF or Mahvel.
Interesting suggestion, although personally I hate the idea of seeding in all competitive things e.g. I hate it in Football (Soccer).
Yeah, I posted the link to the original story a bit earlier and I don’t believe a word he’s saying. Reading between the lines what he’s actually saying is: please don’t ban me. Honestly, it shouldn’t matter how much of a bitch ChrisG is being. If Flocker had any sense he would have picked his shit, steamrolled ChrisG and embarrassed him until the set was over OR until Chris picked his shit. That he [Flocker] didn’t do that is a problem.
The best solution to this collusion problem is to give the tournament prize money (and a MadCatz t-shirt) to a random person in the stream chat anytime that grand finals are not played with top tier characters (as determined by a panel of experts, like James Chen, Maximillian, Mike Ross, etc…).
I disagree with this, solely on one example, so this isn’t a valid disagreement, more like “Hey look, I’m playing Devil’s Advocate for a quick second”
In the MvC2 days, if Sanford and Yipes made it to finals, I would have zero problem watching the match if Sanford picked MSP and Yipes picked Thrax. Why? Because I’m tired of seeing the same bullshit, and both of them play each others’ teams completely different. This doesn’t apply to most newer games, because most of the time, the characters are played more flow-chart than that.
But yeah, if I start seeing some bullshit taunts and dumb fuckerry combos, I get mad… Especially if it’s a game I enjoy.
I don’t understand how Chris G is somehow beneath Daigo/Infiltration and Justin Wong. You have to be willingly be ignorant or dead wrong to believe Chris G doesn’t generate viewership on stream. Half the people probably watch steams just because they want to see Chris G get blown up.
He said specifically players that generate cash. You have to be delusional to believe Chris G doesn’t generate cash via viewership. How exactly does Daigo/Infiltration/Justin generate cash differently?
It’s hard to say unless he runs his own personal stream, and from there we can get a good idea of who will tune in specifically to watch Chris G. I doubt viewership will change if there was anybody else in finals matches.
You also have to keep in mind the number of views he will theoretically gain just from him playing on stream, versus how much cash you’ll generate. Viewership is already pretty low in the FGC in comparison to other entities, and the money we generate off stream ads is jack shit. Nobody’s getting rich in this scene, but we have to find ways to start bringing in money, and fucking around in Grand Finals on stream is the worse way to go about it.
In actuality, Chris G doesn’t do a damn thing for AGE. He wears some headphones, plays video games, and bitches publicly. That’s his net value. It’s not exactly a coincidence the team was recently disbanded, and I’m sure it has largely to do with the fact that their players aren’t generating the income they were expected to.
That’s why it’d be effective. If ChrisG’s antics force everyone across the country to drop the game the backlash he’d receive would be immense. He’d know that he personally killed SF4 or MvC3. Or just ban the players who were involved in the collusion for a year,
It’s difficult to assign an exact value to a player but Chris G brings viewership analogous to Infiltration in street fighter. Everyone is watching these guys either to watch them steamroll over everyone else or to see who knocks them off the top spot. In that sense Chris G does bring in viewership which brings in advertising and sponsorship. I know he isn’t the most likable guy or fun to watch but it’s difficult to downplay his role in bringing in viewership and money into the FGC.
The problem with the FGC is that it is based primarily off of console. You won’t get too many sponsors if all a company can sell is glowing headphones and controllers/sticks. With computer games there is virtually no end to the kinds of products you can sell and thus sponsorships can actually lead to real salaries. I’d advocate lateraling toward playing games on high end computers to attract sponsors but this obviously is costly and has risks associated with it that I won’t get into.
AGE is trash but that’s exactly why they need players like Chris G to support their brand. The reason AGE is on the verge of collapsing financially is because their products are ass, not because of Chris G/Fanatic/Romance. If the company went down tomorrow I’d imagine other companies picking up Chris G for sponsorship because of his success in Marvel, AE, SxT, Injustice, Divekick. It’s a no-brainer really, and all the trash talk and denying the obvious collusion won’t make any difference.
Consider that for years now people have been rooting against him at what is basically his passion and livelihood. In all these high pressure situations people have been booing him and rooting for the underdog. After a ton of that anyone would grow to resent the crowd and the FGC. If he really is a monster you all know who created him right? I’ve seen some of the crap he gets in tournaments and I really would hate going through the garbage he has to plow through and pretend it doesn’t bother him.
People are thinking too small if all you’re looking at is sponsorships from game related stuff. As soon as things blow up, sponsors outside of gaming can come in - heck, I believe that’s already the case with StarCraft in Korea.
