The mainstream touhou fans are just playing it for lulz, since it’s touhou. They will stop playing it when people start learning things, so why do they matter.
Also:
there’s a no-weather hack that disables weather effects
And a weather text patch that patches the game with English text for the weather displays.
Hmmmm…I know I’m god awful at IaMP, but now that there’s a patch to have the weather notifications in English, I may just give it a shot. Just out of curiosity, how is the Bunny Girl?
Most people’s impression seems to be that she is one of the worst characters in the game, both sprite quality and tier-wise. But obviously the game’s been out for like 10 days so who knows.
Reisen(bunny) has some things going for her, but all of them are like pester/annoyance type stuff rather than anything solid or threatening. So yeah, she’s probably your style Turbo.
To be fair, she’s not in the same boat as IaMP’s Hong. You can probably at least learn how to play SWR with Reisen since she at least has tools. Unlike Hong who didn’t have any of the same tools the rest of the cast had. But between Reisen(bunny) and Marisa I really can’t tell who is worse. They’re both pretty bad IMO.
… heh, you know… I think the new “noob warning” for the FAQ on the wiki should be “If you’ve never played IaMP or SWR: WHATEVER THE FUCK YOU DO, DO NOT LEARN BY PLAYING YOUMU KONPAKU”
LOL, I guess some one should have warned you the menu controls remain the same regardless of how you set your buttons for in-game?
Eh, what problem were you having? Some one can walk you through it, it’s not so difficult.
Aya is very simple and strait forward. Mindless mashing goes a long way. I say mindless because she’s mostly just positioning brute force, no real technical stuff or mindgames, and her mixups couldn’t be more strait forward.
Youmu, uhh, when you play her you’re either going to play her very right, or very very very wrong. That’s all I can say I’m afraid.
Well let’s just go through the steps one by one to make sure we don’t skip anything.
go to profile from main menu
select second option on list
select a profile name from the list (just use the first one)
push a direction (it autoconfigs the other directions)
set A B C D (in order: melee, bullet 1, bullet 2, dash)
set the keybinds for macros if you want.
on the last option you need to push confirm, the same button you used to select the menu options with
If you used the first profile don’t worry about the rest, just try it in-game. If you used one of the other profiles on the list then do this:
go to practice and push button 1 (not confirm, not cancel, the other button that does something), it will bring up a menu
select the first option
select the profile you edited
and try it in-game
If that doesn’t work we can do some trial and error stuff with the config.dat I think
Aight, so I just got done watching all the replays for the 300+ player Japanese netplay tournament.
Afterthoughts:
Bellreisa was right when he said the gameflow is a lot like Meltyblood. Except, without throws or effective high/lows the concepts of jumping around and fishing for random shit, then staggering for twitch reactions, is even more emphasized. There’s hardly any reason not to just block, and there’s barely any reason to try and do anything to break the opponent’s guard.
Typhoon (super armor) and Spring Haze (no melee) weathers completely ruin whatever kind of serious match they were trying to have. Both players either spam the same attack repeatedly+mindlessly or run away for the duration of the weather.
Flight really makes the game bouncey and jumpy, even more than MB. The only character I saw with an answer for it was Iku, using her lightning-bar alt.skillcard, which is ironic considering Iku’s playstyle is so jumpy and bouncey. I assume Reimu also has an answer but I didn’t see it much in the tournament.
Aya, Remilia, and Yuyuko seem to be the most intuitive “scrub friendly” characters. They are simple, strait forward, and highly effective anywhere from scrub level to advanced level. Beyond that, it looks like Youmu and Reimu.
(So yeah, if you’re just getting into the game, these are the characters that are prolly a good start. Then you can move to new characters after you learn the game).
There were SO MANY total scrubs in the tournament. Yes, Japan has scrubs just like we do, some of them playing even worse than our scrubs. But I guess it’s to be expected from a netplay tournament.
I would dislike this game a lot less if weather and flight/screen were modified.
None of the really good IaMP players entered, and none of the good players from the demo tournaments entered either, so I guess we’ll have to wait for the first official offline tournament to see what the “top players” will do with the game.
I think the “best” showcase of skill in the tournament was from a Remilia player, and also pretty good matches from Aya and Reimu.
