wow you guys don’t really know who e-town is?

I think i might take this bet.

I will face E-town and u guyz can side bet

I like E-Town

Merry Christmas everyone !!!

I’m on the same boat man.

Thanks to Geese and Jay for the suggestions on what to get, but I still got a lot of reading to do to catch up.

couple of questions for you guys:

  • AMD or Intel? Dualcore? There’s a quadcore? Which ones do you guys have? What’s the highest FSB possible right now on latest? What’s the average? is less than 2.4Ghz unnacceptable? etc

  • Are these mobos backward compatible with old IDEs? I’m thinking yes, but i’m asking just to make sure, I got a lot of stuff stored on old drives I need to transfer.

  • How much power do these new rigs need? As in what are the specs on power supplies? Do I really need $150 on powersupplies now?

  • Should I move to Vista?

Im thinking of maybe buying some parts during boxing day if there is a good sale somewhere. I’m not really big on online shopping so I’d prefer if you have local shops to recommend.
thanks!

btw, my budget is $500 - $700 excluding graphics card which I’m thinking will be an additional $300+ on top of that and excluding monitor, keyboard, mice, soundcard and DVD-burner as well.

EDIT:
Reading this article, sounds pretty good so far:
http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/$500_gaming_pc_upgrade/

  1. quadcore is the way to go hands down. get the q6600 its the sweet spot.
highest fsb just depends on how lucky you get on your overclock.
  2. more mnew mobos are backward compatible, tho sata is pretty standard at this point
  3. get at least 450-500 watts of good quality power.
  4. vista imo is great. i run it np. but a lot of people say wait for sp1.
  5. your budget is good for quite a solid computer.

-you can get the e4300 (dual core) for like 100 bucks, prolly cheaper. (tho i still recommend the q6600 for about 180 more)
-mobo, get a gigabyte ds3l its like 100 bucks
-power supply+case, this is what i have and im really happy with it:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2974454&Sku=ULT33183%20K
thats 121 for the case and a ridiculously good power supply (which sells for like 100 bucks on amazon. so the case is a gime)
-ram, get ocz or crucial, doesnt REALLY matter as long as its a brand name and it has a good warranty.
-vid card, GT.

that’ll be well within your budget and you’ll be happy with it.
the reason i recommend e4300 is because its MASSIVELY overclockable. 3.2-3.4 from the stock is well within reach, especially with an after market cooler, which i also highly recommend.
just look at jay, aka my son’s, posts for details

Don’t see much consumer stuff coming out in the next few years that might need quad-core except some games, but for those you would need to put a lot of money into the graphics as well. Dual-core should be all you need for now.

lol, standard JS Master bet is 4/7 best of 5 for $20 I’m fine with that but it’ll be a while till I have free time to go to uptown. Maybe late Jan or something.

Ron you’re still doing graphic work right? Get the quad.

How many IDE drives are you using? The DS3L only has one IDE port / 4 sata, so you might run into problems depending on your case because of where the IDE port is located + length of the ribbon.
IDE ODD will not work too well if you have IDE HHDD in a sidemounted HDD cage. Ribbons need more than 2 slots or whatever!
At least you’re only spending 100$ on something that could last a few years and easy to upgrade.

Unless you’re doing a ton of things on top of CS3, you could wait for Penryn CPU which is out in the next 2 months but at a premium price.

Soundcard, just use onboard. Most of the recent boards are using 7.1 HD audio. X-fi is a good aftermarket choice but that depends on your needs.

By the time you decide to get some parts, the 8800GT price should be stable around 240-270. The new GTS isn’t worth the extra 80+ unless you plan on using anything bigger than a 24" at 8xAA and all the other shit that isn’t noticeable in games unless you’re standing still.

If your case doesn’t include a PSU, get one of the HX series from Corsair.

Right now, there isn’t that many problems with running Vista 64 unless you’ve got a bunch of legacy hardware and really really old software. If not, just get x86 and run 2gb or ram.

An aftermarket cooler for your cpu, Ultima 90 + scythe 21f = 50$
Cooler for gpu, DuOrb = 40 - 60. Or an Accelero S1 which is between 20 and 30, but needs 2 fans at extra $$

Use shopbot.ca for prices, it won’t get you all the stores but it could help. Check out ncix and directcanada, their boxing day deals are pretty good, stacked on top of only gst just makes it better haha.

Are you mad? I’ll face him first.

It’s prolly someone from Orbit, but I’ll still put $20 bucks on Eric cause he is easily on Orbit level.

Set this up whenever, we can do it this Friday if you wish. I will bring my camera and a mop.

Should pick up the 8800GT now if there’s gaming to be done

hmmm didn’t get to play the rising one…

I have work on Friday! don’t schedule a time witout confirmation anyway. Better day would be the following Friday the 4th.

That’s fine…I don’t really care when it is, cause I get off work at 5, so I can be there whenever. The 4th sounds good.

Are you gonna film it? And when you lose stamp the word “OWNED” in big letters over the video? Or do you only do that when you Parry 3 hit dragon punches?

It’s funny because it’s true

RanBats for this week has been cancelled due to the Holiday Seasons, thanks.
