Top Tier Stigma?

i just choose characters that can dish out easy damage.

thats why i played slayer in ggxx series and dudley in 3s.

coincidentally these characters are also top mid/top in their respective games. i don’t pick bottom tier thats for sure; i like winning.

I don’t put in any effort and still win.

Does that make me a bad person?

I don’t care much for character tiers though.

I’ve been playing fighting games since SF2 but it took me till 2004 to really know about fighting games. CvS2 was my main game back when my eyes were opened. My CvS2 team is Vega/Bison/Sagat. The four bosses and Dee Jay were my favorites of the SF cast. So when I finally got the chance to play ST in some form on the regular(HSF2AE) I used those characters. Then CC2 came out. I don’t really enjoy how ST Vega plays so I don’t use him much, but I enjoy the gameplay of SF2 Sagat moreso than in any of the other fighters so I’ll use him. And if I’m going to use him, why not use his better version(if it’s not broken)?

I really don’t care either way. I just use the characters I’m comfortable with. I’m comfortable with Steve Fox, but also Sergei Dragunov and all versions of Raphael.

If Dragunov and/or Raphael are soft banned in T6/SC4 then I’ll still be playing them.

I tend to like to pick mid-tier kind of characters because I usually avoid top tier because I usually don’t like the inevitable mirror match. Just characters that you somewhat see of. So tier listings a little bit tend to affect my choice but usually it’s just that feel good instinct of trying out a few characters.

I feel most comfortable in the upper-mid tier range. I often don’t like the actual top tiers, because they tend to be overplayed to death. I also don’t really dig the bottom rungs of society unless there’s a character that really strikes my fancy. I don’t do it because I want to be the underdog, I just find top tiers less fun in most cases.

i choose regardless of tier listings. i don’t care how good a character is; if i don’t like how the character plays then i’m not going to bother

letting tiers affect you is bllsht. i just want to win.

if you just wanted to win then you would play top tier :looney:

You play to win.

If you’re better with that high tier or mid tier, than you are with that top tier, then using that high tier is the best choice. What good is picking a top tier if you, yourself, is unable to even make that character play like it’s top tier.

People can and do play a top tier as if it was low tier.

Don’t fool yourself thinking that picking a top tier automatically means a win. If that’s the case, then that doesn’t say much for a game’s balance.

Pick whomever helps you get the win, while being fun at the sametime. Winning is fun too. Don’t worry about tiers until you hit the glass ceiling.

And another note is that sometimes low tiers seem REALLY good when no one knows how to deal with them. Why because people ignore low tiers and forget how threatening they can be in a game that actually has balance to it.

EDIT: oh yeah, howcome people always got to pick a ton of characters anyway? Whatever happened to just specializing with one, and learning how to counter and combat their specific weaknesses? It’d make you better overall anyway. Sometimes I think people should just stick to one character and build on that.

I’ve always felt alone in having that opinion, but yeah, I totally agree.

People who stigmatize others for playing any sort of character are losers. There should really be only 2 types of players in anyones respective point of view. People who can beat you, and people you can beat. There is no room for excuses or whining, just learning how to beat people. If you have to resort to putting someone down for the character they use after being beaten, it just shows how bad a competitor you are. Anyone who uses these excuses has no real authority on the game and should be ignored.

I’ll admit I used to be one of those people who wanted to play seldom used characters just to be a unique little snowflake, but as I’ve gotten more competitive I managed to break that stupid habit. Like many have said before me, you play to win. I still play who I enjoy, regardless of their tier, but I don’t have that dumbass mindset anymore.

I really hate the whole idea of soft banning. Honestly, something being soft banned basically means it isn’t banned to anyone with a modicum of competitive spirit and basic intelligence.

I use Dudley because he is the best character in 3s.

i never really understood that either

at most i’ll play 2 but that’s pushing it

Well I understand one mode of thinking people have told me, and that’s use insert character so you know how to beat them.

That works.

i know that standpoint makes sense, but it just doesn’t read correctly with my mindset

i’m fine with focusing on my character alone. battling the matchup is enough … i don’t learn by playing another character, i learn by getting experience against the character myself. i’m sure some people learn differently, but i won’t be ahead of the game if i’m just going the extra mile to learn a completely different character just for the sake of knowledge when i can get a straight-forward better experience playing against said character.

BUT then you got the people who have comp consisting of me myself and my nextdoor neighbor

the poll needs a third option.
It’s something n between for me.
I usually pick a character that I like and enjoy to play, I don’t look for top tier.
But if a character is too low on the tierlist I don’t want to spend much time learning it.

By picking the other character, you get an understanding of what a good goal for winning that round should be. i.e. V-Ryu wants you in the corner for hadorave. SA2 Chun wants meter to make her an extreme threat. ST Vega wants a knockdown to start shenanigans etc.

Picking the characters helps you to better understand what it is that gives them those opportunities, so from then on you know what you need to do to take them away. vs V-Ryu you now know not to get strong dragon punched, roundhouse hurricaned, gain ground moving forward instead of blocking the hadoken block strings pushing you back, etc. vs SA2 Chun you now know to rush her at the start of the fight where she’s the most vulnerable due to not having meter. vs ST Vega you know to avoid flipkick, roundhouse slides, and throws.

It’s all about taking options away.

That’s why some people will use a top tier no matter what, cause top tiers by default tend to have the most usable and abusable options available, and the most ways to get those chances.
Whereas a low tier does not, they’re limited in what they can do. So in that respect, top tiers would be much more fun cause they sometimes make the low tiers obsolete when they can do the samething as the lesser, but better(damage, ways to do it, easier to execute it) and with more tools.

I pick whoever I have fun using really, don’t care for tiers much since I don’t go to tournies nearly as much as I used to back in the day. Playing VF a lot also makes me just plain ignore tier lists anyways. What sucks though is that the characters I usually end up with in other fighters, just manage to be low tier, like Remy in 3s or Anji in GG.

i try to balance things
i want to pick effective character (so high tiers) that i like
also there are other factor in, my choice have to suit my game style and bottom tiers become useless in the long run against strong ppl
then it all depends on how the game is balanced

Usually, when you are new to a game, you’ll play chars you like/feel comfortable with, regardless of tiers, cause you are simply feeling the game out.

But as you start getting better, and start playing more competitively/seriously (money matches, tournaments), you eventually, for the most part, will start getting into top tiers more and more, simply because you are playing to win, and you will find that some character have a very difficult time winning consistently at high levels.

To answer the question…I usually play(ed) top tiers in games because I always took games very seriously, I loved traveling out of state for tourneys, doing money matches, etc. back in the day…I don’t play seriously any more though.
