First off, great read by Ben Reed.
Well here’s my opinion on the 10 greatest, based both of style and gameplay in no particular order.
Ryu: Yea he’s average, is kind of good against everyone but doesn’t destroy them all, all of the time. His design is minimalist but, somehow he’s become the masterpiece that would be ruined with one extra brushstroke y’know?
I think part of why he seems kind of bad-ass is that he’s an otherwise ordinary martial artist with an almost super-natural level of fighting spirit.
Akuma: His intro in SF2T kind of put him on the map but, his perpetually mean look and nearly constant gameplay viability kep him there. I really like SFA2 for, “I am power mad flesh, now feel how weak you truly are.” I have to knock points off for that cyber-akuma thing in MvsSF but, the artists do a good job of making it always look like someone just pissed in his beer, mean.
Yamazaki: Slick duds, slick moves and a crazy-ass psycho attitude but, mostly the slick duds. Seriously, I’ve dressed myself like that going into clubs (and gotten head in). Y’all could do that too, given a small amount of time and proper hygiene. Really, I gotta love a character I could cos-play as, and 1) nobody would notice and 2) get head in a club in! Slick duds.
Blue Mary: Yea, I know Chun-Li and Cammy are far more well known and influential. Blue Mary needs props for being a female character (possibly one of the first) who is normally clothed, baggy pants and sports bra FTW. Also, though she is fast most of justice is delivered through punishing grabs and counters. KOF has a higher proportion of characters that dress like normal people.
Sentinel: Looks kinda cool, definitely the best looking of almost all fictional robots but, he has the following going for him: 1)Super fast with flight, 2)Super hard hitting with any of his combos, 3)nearly infinite combos, 4)one of the best assists in the game making him almost as dangerous from rear-guard as he is on front-line, 5)has combos at range and distance, 6)a Lvl 1 plasma storm catching someone in their face will ruin their shit, 7)shakes the screen when he -walks- and 8) he elevates any team he is on to near pwnage status due to his awesomeness.
Baiken: One of the most unique designs I’ve ever seen, I’m not to combat effective with her but, her being a 1-eyed, one armed, big-breasted, ronin female is just hard to ignore.
Zangief: Just a big scary dude, and I’ve actually seen someone that big in real life (it was when I was in Kuwait, a big black dude named SFC. Fox had like 26 in. biceps -at rest-). I’m sure I’d need at -least- a DEagle to even hurt him. Fuckin’ scary seeing someone that huge, kind of requires me to put Zan on the list.
Hakumen: Looks like Sephiroth minus the cape …and face. No depth really, just the big-ass sword and that even bigger shout of his, “EEEEYAAH!” and that meaty-as BnB combo of his that takes like 40% off anyone. Hitting people with Hakumen just lets out so much aggression it kinda feels good.
Arakune: Nothing special but, he just looks so completely evil and, not the sociopathic, intellectual kind either. I’m talking about a putrid, congealed slime composed of hatred, irrationality, hunger and pestilence. Eddie from Guilty Gear was sort of like this, but he was way to sane compared to Arakune. He is the most nightmarish design I’ve seen, like rotting waste given a sort of sentience and primitive urges.
Cable: I hate that broken piece of shit but, he is influential in that I’ve never seen a character so greatly equated with the word “win”. I swear AHVBx3 is a nuisance but even worse (and these people need to have their sisters peed on) are those online players that use AHVBx3 and I still beat them oh but they last minute rage-quit. Their down to like 10% of their last character and I’m down to like 30% of my last character, they stand a chance, really, then I see “player has left or disconnected”. That’s like pulling a plug on an arcade cabinet, I would seirously kick a dude in the teeth. Fuck Cable and his broken (but at least influentially so) design.
