Top 10 best fighting game characters

Fernandeath from Waku Waku 7 is the absolute best character ever created.

what Pryde blesses shall no man tear asunder

Joke’s on you and just about everyone else. You all THOUGHT Skullo was a joke character, when in actuality he’ll fuck some shit up quick.

He is a joke character. Where Capcom made their joke characters useless in actual play for the most part, Arika made Skullo very playable. Does not mean he is not a joke character. He is a parody on top of a parody, making fun of as many things as they could. I really love Skullo and wish Capcom would get the rights to him above all of the EX characters. He is certainly the best character in that series.

Dhalsim clone.

Not sure how I’d lay out on my top 10, all I know is Terry (OK), Kim (Atatata from Kenshiro, nice mix of charge/regular moves), and Jhun (Style switch on the fly) would be in it. Toss in 2 SF characters and 5 characters from other games and it’d be set.

  1. Fei Long
  2. Ibuki
  3. Dudley
  4. Necro
  5. Ryu
  6. Gouken
  7. Sagat
  8. Feng Wei
  9. Chun Li
  10. Hugo

I think M.Bison deserves special mention because of his cool intro pose in SF, but most of all for being a fighting game boss who actually evolved into being not-banned in tournaments. That’s something you don’t often(ever?).

I always thought he looked like “cap’n crunch: the college years” lol

49 posts and not a single one mentions Andy Bogard. Screw you guys.

And I’m gonna cheat.

  1. Superman
  2. Batman
  3. Captain America
  4. Spider-Man
  5. Captain Marvel
  6. Green Lantern
  7. The Flash
  8. Mega Man
  9. Iron Man

  10. Mario <runz>

For me characters that are based on comics / manga / anime are like a whole other list. After Spidey and Wolvie the rest are in random order more or less.

  1. Spider-Man (Cap/Marvel games)
  2. Wolverine (Cap/Marvel games)
  3. Shuma-Gorath (Cap/Marvel games)
  4. Sentinel (MVC2)
  5. Psylocke (Cap/Marvel games)
  6. Kujo Jotaro AKA JoJo (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)
  7. Kenshiro (Hokuto No Ken)
  8. Ranma (Ranma 1/2 part 2)
  9. Goku (Dragon Ball Z 2 for Famicom or Super Dragon Ball Z)
  10. Naruto (Ultimate Ninja Storm)

Yeah, I know. I was just screwing around.

Though I will have to make three separate lists if I’m going to take this seriously. I’m putting it in a best to worst order but take it loosely. Same goes for the fact that I’d include more characters in each list if I had the room and might even do so depending on how I feel on a particular day.

Character Design/Personality/Concept/Etc.:

  1. Dictator
  2. Guile
  3. Sub-Zero/Scorpion (why separate them?)
  4. Kazuya
  5. Seigfried
  6. Ryu
  7. Cervantes
  8. Shang Tsung
  9. Shao Kahn
  10. Andy Bogard

Gameplay (Hard to do since I’m comparing characters from completely different games):

  1. Guile
  2. Dictator
  3. Kazuya
  4. Ken
  5. Ryu
  6. Paul
  7. Siegfried/Nightmare (close enough)
  8. Kilik
  9. Andy
  10. Terry

Historic Significance:

  1. Ryu
  2. Chun-Li
  3. Scorpion
  4. Dictator
  5. Zangief
  6. Kazuya
  7. Heihachi
  8. Terry
  9. Kyo
  10. Goro

Great read, Ben. Thanks for this! I just read my latest GI yesterday and I was like “…You just don’t know”

I really like these lists when people actually explain their reasoning so thouroughly.

IMO, any list is incomplete without the ff.

Ryu - he defined the archetypical fighting game hero. Gameplay wise, he’s probably one of the most complete characters ever made.

Terry Bogard - because he and his brother Andy went against the archetypical Ryu/Ken type characters by being totally unique from the other. That, and Terry underwent some pretty serious character development, from simple fighter out for revenge, to surrogate father looking after his ward.

Geese Howard - because Terry is incomplete without Geese, also for being one of the most defining of “SNK bosses.”

Dictator - for showing that boss characters don’t have to be cheap by being one of the best balanced bosses in 2D fighting games.

Chun Li - for being the first lady of fighting games, and for having thighs that meant business - even if they were exposed, you always got the impression that she wore her dress that way so that she could effectively kick your ass, and not to pander to the audience.

No specific order…

  1. Sentinel (MvC2)
  2. Clark (KoF)
  3. Rolento (CvS2)
  4. Eddie (Guilty Gear)
  5. Jin (Tekken Tag)
  6. Nu (Blazblue)
  7. Chun Li (3S)
  8. Hanzo (Samurai Showdown)
  9. Mitsurugi (Soul Calibur)
  10. Ryu (SF4)

1.Chun Li(SF)
2.Morrigan(darkstalkers)
3.Orchid(Killer Instinct)
4.Cammy(SF)
5.C.Viper(SF)

Five is all i need haha, somebody else put in another 5 to this list

I like how everyone immediately ignored what the topic was about and just posted lists.
Proof positive that people don’t read.
Then again, the misleading title is probably to blame as well.

Anyway, I have that Game Informer as well, and their list is stupid and random as fuck.
Bayman from DOA? Seriously?

Female, in no particular order

Ivy (Soul Calibur)
Chun-Li (Street Fighter)
Morrigan (DarkStalkers)
Mai (King Of Fighters)
Nakoruru (Samurai Showdown)
Nina (Tekken)
Baiken (Guilty Gear)
Dizzy (Guilty Gear)
Cammy (Street Fighter)
Setsuka (Soul Calibur)

Male, in no particular order

Cervantes (Soul Calibur)
M.Bison (Street Fighter)
Jin Kasaragi (BlazBlue)
Ash Crimson (King Of Fighters)
Lori (King of Fighters)
Eddie (Guilty Gear)
Haohmaru (Samurai Showdown)
Akira Yuki (Virtua Fighter)
Ryu (Street Fighter)
Voldo (Soul Calibur)

About the list in the first post:
All these lists just come down to opinions, you may think so-and-so is the best character but then somebody else may say this-and-that is the best character. Imo this is just for fun (and boredom)

No list matters to me; Chun, you’ll always be my #1.

But anyway… there may be a difference between personal faves and technically proficient fighters (I’d rather use Spidey over Sentinel in MVC2) but of course the two aspects go hand in hand.

Damn, I think I?m partial to a lot of SNK characters. Capcom just doesn?t do that much for me. Here?s my list:

  1. Geese Howard- The guy has a bad ass Hakama, awesome laugh (and funny engrish taunts) and great moves. He also beat the shit out of me at the arcades when I was 8 years old-all while wearing his wrist watch!

  2. Chun Li- Iconic. Even girls who know next to nothing about fighting games know about Chun li. Great character design, great moves, and usually pretty up in the tiers.

  3. Terry Bogard- The dude wore a jacket with torn sleeves and had a cool hat. He just seemed so cool, laid back, and awesome to me. Plus, his move are great (? are you okay!??). His Garou outfit was also cool.

  4. Sub- Zero- He was a ninja that could freeze people. Bad ass.

  5. Blanka- Wow, crazy design! Brazilian monster that can electrocute you. Turned pretty goofy later, but still liked him.

  6. Yamazaki-Didn?t get his design at first, but now I love the whole crazy Yakuza guy thing. He?s fun to play with as well.

  7. Morrigan-If one character has to be up here based mostly on sex appeal, Morrigan is it.

  8. Sagat- Eyepatch, scar on chest, and also usually pretty broken. Yeah, Sagat?s got it. Scary dude and his later designs made him look scarier.

  9. Vanessa- The whole boxer thing has been done to death, but Vanessa brought it to a different level. Great moves and great looks. Another very stylish SNK character.

  10. Akuma-Only shoto character I?m gonna have on here. I can still hear his SFA 2 music in my head. I remember how in awe I was when I first got RD?d.Usually the only Shoto I play with.
