After watching endless matches and videos and having previously played SFVI (dropped it when MK came first came out) I decided to pick up SFXTK. I’m enjoying it, but being an MK9 player feel overwhelmed as to what I must learn!
Anyway, my question is that I’ve picked up Lili and Juri as my team for trying matches online, but all I come across are Kazuyas, Heihachis and the shoto boys (at my level search ofc). Is this becuase those characters are easy to pick up and learn the basics with? Or are they just that popular… Am I jumping too far ahead in attempting to use characters like Lili/Juri? Just losing to these Kens and Ryus is quite frustrating…
Nah man, stick at it with the characters you like playing. You’ll have to suck up a few losses here and there but it’ll be ultimately worth it.
In answer to your questions: Yeah people pick up Ryu and Ken cos they’re familiar to most new players and take the least amount of getting used to so people naturally gravitate towards them. Kaz and Heihachi are two of the higher tier characters and people like winning so they pick them in search of easy wins.
Keep practicing and you’ll be beasting in no time. See ya at SvB if you’re going!!
Sound advice mate! Yeah, I’m gonna stick with them despite how frustrating it is that I’ve not even as so much even tapped into their true potential, in addition to learning all the fundamentals of SFXTK, although I hope to get to grips with that. Anyway, Lili and Juri - they just feel right with me! I also have a thing for evil purple clothed ladies for some reason! (my MK main being Mileena lol). I didn’t realise Kaz and Hei are higher tier! It kinda feels like they’re the TK equivalent of SFs shotos as the Mishima family have similar moves??
Not sure about beasting, but in many years time probably haha. If I went to SvB, I’d make a fool of myself with my horrendous gameplay
Nah, IMO SFxT isn’t really that hard to pick up. But can I borrow your time machine? I’d like to try SFVI too…
As for character selection: I’d suggest trying everyone out before making a final decision on who to main, and also watching match vids on youtube to get an idea what each character can do. That way you can get a better idea how each character works, and whether or not he/she will fit your playstyle.
This is one of the first games I’ve been really serious about and I can say that going to tournaments and just diving into training is the best thing you can do. No game is really hard to learn when you’re motivated, you just have to buckle down and study up.
Right now the Mishimas and Shotos pretty much rule the top tiers but are also incredibly popular characters in general. Although the Mishimas require more thought than the shotos do in their current state. That being said expect to see many more even as you get better (they show up MORE if anything). Juri and Lili are not quite easymode characters to be starting with however they both are very good characters in their own rights. I use both characters and I can tell you that both require good spacing and have some pretty nasty anti-air normals.
Juri can outpoke a lot of characters and has some of the best anti-air normals in the game. Master her c.HP jump cancel combos which is jumping as soon as you connect with the c.HP to either continue a combo or set up a mixup. Her c.MP also has some great anti-air properties although its hard to combo off of in comparison to c.HP. Also she has some interesting properties with her Fujahin (fireball) where the attack will connect but the fireball will not. However if you cross cancel the attack portion she will follow up with the fireball and it will hit continuing the combo. Against the shotos and mishimas be sure to utilize Juri’s counters as often times players will play these characters in auto-mode meaning they will just rinse and repeat combos without hitconfirming (especially the Mishimas). Don’t get too dive kick happy because all of those characters have very solid answers for it.
With Lili again spacing becomes important. Her pokes are nowhere near Juri’s level but Lili can set up some pretty nasty frame traps using Dendrobium :)qcf::p:) when spaced properly. In addition her Andante ( :df::hk:) is also one of the best anti-airs in the game however it requires proper spacing and timing. Lili can mixup quite well and her counters are pretty good for baiting out wakeup moves and making them afraid to toss out limbs. Often times you can catch people jumping in with her :lp:counter which counters high moves. EX Version I’m pretty sure counter’s everything. Every once and a while you may want to throw in her Peacock Waltz or Peacock Jive.
Just a few tips I hope can get you over that hump, even now with 3000+ BP I still struggle time and time again from the Shotos and Mishimas. Eventually someone will discover some killer anti-tech simply because these characters are used so often.
Very useful advice, thank you. I’ll give this a try out in some matches, as I feel training mode is no good. I think it’s better to just fight lots of matches and learn through losses (not as if I have any BP to lose anyway) and try to learn how to utilise both Lili’s and Juri’s best tools such as the one’s you’ve mentioned.
I think one bad habit I have is that I keep trying to do jump in attacks and also I’m not very good with the whole blocking system of SF (so used to being able to hold a buttom to block). I know in MK you have breakers, but in SF what is the “equivalent” of that? Because once I get caught up in some chain I just feel totally helpless and I’m getting slapped around silly. Also how do I handle crossovers? I mean I’m already bad at blocking face on, but when they start getting behind me, I can never block in time or am I doing something majorly wrong?
Hey man, stick with the characters you like. Have fun ( despite losses), always try to evolve your game, spend equal time in replay mode, character specific replay is a great tool, and save matches you should have won but lost, and that you won, check your own play style in them, and appreciate your progress! Good luck man!
