Tokyo Game Action in Winchendon, MA is liquidating all assets on June 6th 2009

Im pretty sure most if not all the fighting and benami games are dead. The only thing that wasnt in the floods path was the puzzle and racing games in the front of the store. Sad times.

the place got flooded when he went away to japan
so he came back and everything was ruined

I assume he had no flood insurance. And being 500k is a LOT. How do you get that deep in debt. Sorry for his losses and all, but nothing about this seemed unpreventable.

He already spent his extra money on volcano insurance.

And whether this was “preventable” or not is a moot point. The arcade brought happiness to many people, and was one of the few left in America. That alone is reason enough to support him and his family - he was brave enough to run a business centered on the dying breed of arcade games, and those who played there will never forget it.

How bad was the flood? If it only got the lower part of the cabs isn’t it possible to save the board and sell that?

Can you still salvage the cabs themselves? You can still make some money off of that.

I’m terribly sorry to hear this. TGA is good peoples. Is it more helpful to donate now or contribute towards the auctioning later?

That’s a dick comment. How about me, when I lost like $20-30k last year due to flooding? (I don’t have any electronics down there so my damage was “minimal”.)

The problem is that flood insurance is typically an additional rider (not part of) most insurance policies. It’s only typically part of your policy if you’re in a flood plain, and a lot of the actual flood plains these days don’t match with the government’s established flood plains due to development/urban sprawl/etc (as people in Washington State found out the last couple months). So yes, you absolutely can have your house destroyed in a situation where you would never be expected to need to have flood or Act Of God insurance. Go look into flooding & insurance & flood plains: a lot of people have been wiped out lately not just due to the economy but by floods and water damage happening in parts of the country that that’s just never happened before.

Anyways. TGA is good peoples. I’m very sorry for your loss. Vampyre’s comments:

just are crushingly prescient.

NOOO!! Say it isn’t so. I didn’t even get a chance to go there and play again since last year.

So you’re saying there’s no way to get the proper type of insurance to protect yourself from floods? If so, that’s a shame. I’ll be looking deeper into my policy because of this, and see if my house is properly covered. . .

They might even find ways around it like saying it wasn’t natral cause because his pipes burst and that has nothing to do with natrual disasters so they might use that excuse to say he was neglagent. People suck sometimes.:annoy::sad:

Its pretty much just because insurance companies are all thieves

I don’t really know Andy but the one time I went to TGA he treated everyone with respect and kindness and it was obvious that he was trying to keep the arcade scene alive. That’s enough for me to want to donate. Anyone who ever went to his arcade or has gotten anything out of being an arcade goer (made friends, had fun times, etc…) should really donate something to this guy. It’s obvious he spent a lot of time/effort at TGA. Best of luck to Andy and his family and hope the auction goes off well.

Wish you had moved everything to S. Cal bud.

I live in Palmer Mass about an hour from Winchendon and those storms where horrific. Took out power for miles flooded everything in sight, collapsed roofs. It’s really bad. A lot of people lost their homes and businesses.

I was panning to go to Tokyo Game Action real soon to. sad their closed down now I can’t go. Really sucks. Would be nice to know what the boards and such are going for.

i used to frequent TGA when it was in woonsocket, i always wanted to head out to western mass.

this is sad :[

Sucks that many businesses are struggling to survive in this economy. I have never bought anything from them, but I have only heard good things :frowning:

Considering that this was pretty much the only arcade close enough for me to drive to on weekends or vacation, I deeply regret not hearing about it sooner. From what I have heard, this is probably the only arcade these days I would have truly considered driving 2-3 hours for.

I really hope for the best for TGA, especially Andy, and I that someone with equally good intentions will be able to carry the torch and open an arcade that can be even remotely as good as TGA. Arcades must live, which is why I mourn for TGA.

I’ve been living in western mass for about 3 years and only recently stumbled upon TGA’s website. A friend of mine was planning on driving up from Pennyslvania so that we could go relive our childhood arcade glorydays, but just now when I was trying to find some info on what games they had etc. I wind up here. I couldn’t feel worse for these people. Running an arcade in America these days couldn’t have been even remotely profitable and so I imagine it was a real labor of love. Hopefully things pan out at the auction.

OK, I never saw a response back to this so I just sent a little $ along because you guys were awesome to me in Tokyo. Much love and I hope things turn around completely here over time. :frowning:

Hey Preppy, FYI the homepage has been updated. www.tokyogameaction.com

I’m sorry to hear this very sad news. I never been to TGA, but I heard nothing but great things about this arcade. I’m in the process of try to start an arcade in the ATL that would be a japanese style arcade. I will try my best to get an investor before the auction in june. What he has is what i’m looking for as long as the cab’s and the games inside of them work! Does anyone know if andy post on srk? If so please have him send me a PM so we can talk business.

Though i’ve never met him or been to his arcade, but I can see the love he put into his arcade from what I read on his site. I can also see it from the respond’s I see from people that attended his arcade on srk. If I can use his machines to bring that type of joy to the ATL that would be great. I tried to register on the site to send him a message, but the site registry was closed.
