When I say “bulky”, I pretty much mean bulky. The buttons are bigger than my fingers, and I’m not comfortable than that. On a pad, everything is within centimeters, and execution (in my opinion) is more precise. I have no desire to move about so much on a joystick as I play.
Yeah magic series combo and moves requiring more than one button to be pressed that aren’t close together(Ex: smartbombs), are awkward as hell on a pad.
I just got my first stick about a month ago and I still haven’t got good enough with it to be able to do the same stuff as I could with my pad
Before now, I hadn’t played on a stick since back when I use to go to arcades years ago when I was still a kid and I wasn’t all that good back then to begin with.
Somethings are easier already however, I am sure sooner or later I’ll get up to speed.
Some people just have a harder time using a stick than a pad, so they think that they cannot learn using a stick to the fullest, to the point that it will give them an advantage over a pad. I mean technically, you can use your same argument to say that no one should learn how to use any characters that are lower than the highest tiers, because otherwise you are purposely handicapping yourself.
But yeah, stick is better than pad, but some people just can’t seem to learn how to use a stick to the fullest.
Is it really that hard to comprehend what im trying to say? I dont feel im “handicapping myself” because im in my comfort zone and my execution on pad is much better than it is on stick. If anything ill be “handicapping myself” by using stick =/. I mean…dont get the wrong idea, the 360 pad is trash. I can barely play 3s with it…but, offline on a saturn, or even ps2 pad i can hold my own in 3s.
edit - as Emil and Henaki stated…its all about preference. If i wanna use mid-tier, im gonna use it. Just because High level players use Top tier that automatically means i have to jump on the bandwagon as well? I really dont get your logic Cornertrap.
Come to think of it, it’d probably be way easier to dash and you could probably still do 360/whatever’s on a good Saturn pad, without having to worry about d-pads and whatnot. I’m gonna contemplate on getting one cause right now that’s sounding like a sweet setup.
Man with practice and good players to play against you can compete with a pad or joystick IMO. Hold dat got top 3 at evoeast using a pad and a xbox live player got top 8 in ST at evowest with his big ass x-box pad. If you check the vids you’ll see it. Just use what you like.
I prefer joysticks because I grew up in the golden age of arcades, but i’ve played some damn good pad players. Trent from orlando is one of the best pad players i’ve ever played against. I think he is retired now, but in his day he was the 2nd best cvs2 player in the southeast region. 2nd only to alex navarro.
Use what feels confortable to you. Most of the top players in the world use joysticks. But most of the top players in the world are use to playing in arcades and grew up in the arcades.
I thought after years of the competitive gaming scene existing, threads like this wouldn’t exist anymore. It’s already been proven that sticks are superior to pads by technical reasoning. I honestly don’t see the reasoning behind using a pad in this day and age. Most players who do use pads are just the players who haven’t had enough experience with sticks and feel that they could never play at their best with a stick. So instead of putting forth the effort in learning how to play a stick, they’d rather stick to their “comfort zone” with the pad. Thus limiting what they could “potentially” do.
