TN THREAD - Dateline: How to catch a Oni

Yea man, after watching some cheeseball MTV video on Empire Arcadia (that really REALLY made them look fucking lame). I realized that we should have had some kind of clan tag and t-shirts because it DONT MEAN SHIT.

Team WYKBSF

Team WHAT YOU KNOW BOUT STREET FIGHTER??

I was thinking about this after FR. I do suspect this might be a major dividing point between “top players” and just “good players” from other areas. I know I can do pretty well in casuals, and even some local tournaments… but man did I get the jitters for my first FR matchup. Couldn’t do shit against pad blanka. They went away after that match, after I calmed down (and Phil gave me a good pep talk). Played my next 3 matches with a lot more calm, and won them. Then a guile shook me up a bit and I started playing desperate again.

So it had me asking… is this something the “top players” had to go through to some degree? Like you said, is it just that they get more tourney practice? I hope it’s this, because it would suggest it’s something that will go away eventually. I can’t directly observe it in most of the other TN players, but again maybe that’s the kind of thing that you only recognize in yourself.

I still get horrible tournament nerves, and it was pretty bad at FR, but I can feel them loosening up. Except on stream. I was seriously about to throw up.

I have no nerves at tournament. This is largely due to the significant number of Game Galaxy tournaments that i’ve been a part of as well as KiT and being at Final Round twice. I don’t think that’s the difference. I think the difference is that they play all of the fucking time and against other people who play all of the fucking time.

An exception would be when I switched to Blanka that one match… I had some nerves as I realized that I haven’t done any Blanka combos etc for ages… But, when I play Sim I’m chill.

Ha, I know what you mean. I’m actually going to pick up Deadpool and kick Haggar out for a little while. Except Phoenix I have really no zoning, and he works surprisingly well with both Wesker and Phoenix so far.

Neoblood, very true, and I hate it that you’re right because I usually like the character.

Please, do this.

So i played the MK 9 demo today and I am impressed and enjoy it.

I had tourney nerves like crazy when I first started playing FGs. Over the years, I’ve contained them with copious amounts of Sparks. Since I play SF better sober than drunk (unlike Guilty Gear…), I’ve learned to contain those nerves by going to a lot more tournaments. Like Shawn, my nerves are steady for the most part because of all those Game Galaxy tourneys that we have.

Enter in more tourneys and become more situated within that type of environment. The more tourneys you’re in, the more familiar and comfortable you’ll be. I still do get those thoughts of doubt hit the back of my mind when my opponent has a tremendous life leading playing VEGA or baited into an Ultra. But during the animation sequence of the Ultra, I tell myself to not give a fuck, which is how the most desperate Honda jump back fierce helped me win my first match :>

I don’t really have tournament nerves that bad, I just subconsciously play too safe. It is hard not to, with Akuma… whenever one jump ends up taking half of your health bar. I talked to Dieminion about Akuma/Guy before I played the Guy player that put me out, and his strategy for Akuma was " Maul him. " and so, first game I did. After that first game he started just running away, getting hits in as I came in. I should have just ignored them and took half health getting in, knocked him down once then took his whole bar on 3 vortex mix-ups like I know how to… but because It was tournament I started running away and playing too safe.

That isn’t the whole reason I lost, I lost because in the later rounds I was making small mistakes, every one of which was punished for nearly half health, then I tried to chip him out, which is always a mistake in SSF4. I need to switch to Balrog so I don’t have to worry about health and complex vortex shit, spacing, option selects, pinking, etc.

I get nerves but it makes me better I’d say, makes me play a lot safer and I’m Gief so that’s cool with me.

I got nerves fighting Keits in my second set of matches in MvC3. I was like “Oh shit. A well-respected player known nationwide. I’m the underdog here…” After the first ten seconds of our first match, I calmed down and focused. All three matches were really close, and if xfactor wouldn’t have ruined my Sent combo, I would’ve won. Phil saw those matches and was rooting me on.

I know a lot of us are kinda strapped, but Nashville ought to consider putting more money on the line, even in casual play. That or have casual tourneys at Fight Nights whenever we can get them together and tolerate a tourney structure. Tourney jitters come from having personal stakes in your performance, and holding mock tournaments and DEM MONEY MATCHES may not be the same as participating in majors, but upping the stakes approaches it.

Not even money matches necessarily. Maybe stuff like Bitch You Buy My Lunch Matches. Loser buys. lol.

Pretty much this. MLG is a joke. Pro Gaming is a joke. It’s all just venture capitalists throwing money at kids that have impressive Halo skills and are willing to wear a giant brand logo across their forehead. It’s an advertisement. It’s an advertisement for the game, it’s an advertisement for products slapped on a team’s shirt/jacket/hardware, it’s an advertisement for the idiots putting it together. It’s all advertisement.

Nashville needs some t-shirts that have the Cisco’s Chicken and Waffles logo somewhere on it. Fuck.

naw just custom order some Titans/Preds/Vanderbilt jerseys and put your handles on the back like real motherfuckin’ G’s

I’m all about putting money on the line. Makes the game more interesting. Makes me do less stupid Shit. Makes me learn how to more properly play.

I wish I lived closer to you guys. No homo.

I know what you mean. I hate being out in the middle of nowhere.

GGs to all last night at Hasting’s!

Duck - Dark Phoenix mirrors were pretty crazy man. Fun shit as usual.

Jas - Where my 20 push-ups at kid?! Despite the outcome of the ft5, good shit. That Wesker is gettin real stupid.

Also, I agree with Duckie about reppin DGA and Im all for it now. I really want Memphis to be feared and respected as a force within the fighting game community much like it was for Guilty Gear but this time, on a even greater scale. So I guess I’ll be DGA Bishop or DGA Boss from now on.
