You can’t air grab incoming characters unless they’re pressing buttons.
EDIT: To tech grabs you can buffer :h:-versions of special moves into them as well like Air tatsu.
Otherwise, you just press forward or back :h: when you anticipate a jump.
try dash jumping or super jumping instead of just a regular jump.
also each character has different ranges on their air grabs (afaik that’s what i’ve heard, though personally i think it could just be an issue with every character having significant differences in hitbox sizes)–ameterasu for example being known for having a great air throw. if you’re getting an h attack instead of a throw, it’s likely due to the fact that you’re out of range… so learn the range of each character’s air throw.
This is what I do with Mag + Tron.
Character comes in, I call Gustaff assist and Sj. ADDF option select throw.
If they press a button they get thrown, if they tech they get hit by gustaff, if they do nothing gustaff keeps me safe.
I Kara whiff most of my air throws with Chris’ grenade/flamethrower or Kuma’s tastu. Never fails.
typically the best way is to apply so much ground pressure the opponent can’t stop it. The next logical step is for them to jump out of the ground pressure in which case that leads to the air throw game.
Not sure if it helps you land air grabs but its good to hold forward of back with doing jumping C’s it option selects a throw/throw break if they are too close to get hit by the jumping C.
Assuming your characters jumping C is good.
sighs, sadfaces, and walks away
As far as I an tell Skrull and Ammy have the most range on air throws.
If you’re getting j.H, I think you’re just hitting the H too early or keeping your stick neutral. You need to commit to a direction + press H when your bodies are near each other.
A bit of a piggyback on the OP, but does anyone have any tips on teching air grabs? So many times I feel like I should have tech’d and I still get thrown anyway. What’s the window like, and does mashing forward H prevent a tech from happening?
All you really have to do is jump at the last moment, only an idiot would jump and have a lot of air time expecting to get away with a grab.
