Didnt know SRK had a comics thread.
But long story short I was into comics back in the Spawn days, so quite a while.
New job around the corner from Midtown Comics in Manhattan so I am now enabled and have spare cash again.
So basically Im wondering whats great. I used to like #1s to see whats going on, so I got in on some of the dc. I never read any dc prior to the new 52 so fresh look for me. So far only grabbed action comics and batman #2. Few other #1s but nothing really caught my eye. I picked up an older Artifacts 1, havent read it yet but I used to like the Darkness and love the image/topcow type of art.
Additionally grabbed the Infinite #1 and Theater#1.
My friend recommended Fly and Skullkickers. Skullkickers will take me some time to try and locate the others.
What else is hot now? I missed out on this Schism and wondering if I should grab that. Are 2nd and 3rd prints really that much of a difference in long term value? I see 2nd and 3rds and no 1sts sometimes.
Also hoped to get a little list going since I grabbed a 3day comiccon pass as well.
Morning Glories any good? Seems a little fruity but something keeps drawing me to those covers.
Also thinking of grabbing some Grimm Fairy tales for the wife. gives her good halloween costume ideas.
Yeah SRK member Tokoyama2000 draws Skull Kickers so most def a good title to follow.
Schism’s alright but I’m not sure if it’s what you call mandatory reading. Pick up X-Men Regenesis 1 that comes out next week and see what the new teams and titles will be like. Then from their decide which characters you want to follow.
I’ll be at the NY Con too, all 4 days. Midtown is pretty cool and they know their stuff. On any day that is not Wednesday (IE new comic book day) strike up a conversation with one of the guys and they’ll be able to help guide you to some books that might interest you.
I recommend checking out Jim Balent’s Tarot series. It sounds right up your alley. The first printings are worth a lot of money, too.
My friend/coworker is big into comics but apparently barely reads them so I ask how the stuff he bought was and he has no answers.
So through him I’m already familiar with a bunch of the people at the grand central midtown comics.
But again I feel overwhelmed joining stuff issue 50+. I was never crazy about DC, and marvel I would learn about through friends or buying the cards like marvel masterpieces and reading the backs. I was interested in Fear Itself but then I saw all the cameos and side issues. Sure you only “need” 6 issues but theres 90+ tie ins. Too much for my head there.
So might want to grab Chew because that sounds like fun. Also sounds like Locke and Key is good and not too crazy.
Sometimes tempted to grab the TPB but then that takes the fun out of bags n boards and multiple issues.
Not that I think Fear Itself is that great and all, but the way Marvel crafts events is if you just want to read Fear Itself and skip all the tie-ins you can and you will get a full story. The days of ‘If you want to find out why Loki shoved Thor down the stairs read the Fear Itself one shot The North God Stair Shover’ are long over.
Almost no one here buys every single tie-in issue to every event and yet we are able to discuss these stories with no problems.
Whatever you want to know is in the book you’re holding. If you want a tad more info on what Frog.Man is doing during Fear Itself and you like the artist / writer check out his Fear Itself mini. If not, skip it and go read something else.
So I saw. To get an idea I looked at the first tie in, it was an Iron Man and all it friggin had was a hammer shooting across the sky in one panel.
Id go crazy to collect all that.
I did buy I think 1 or 2 of fear itself a few months ago, no idea where my wife put it. I think #1 was a 2nd printing. I used to avoid 2nd+ printings way back in the day but seems that isn’t that great a deal since it seems a lot of stuff seems to get that treatment. I remember when Death of Superman had came out seeing 8+ printings or some such.
But yea always wanted to get into some Marvel as I loved the movies, games, etc. With Schism I can see the 2 new series splitting. I dont know what up with this spiderman business. I see hercules as spiderman and cant have a bigger ? over my head.
