I’ve seen “high-level” Ganondorf in Brawl. He’s an interesting character to watch, which is more than I can say for most of Brawl’s cast.
If you want someone who is neither a floaty dipshit nor absolute asshole on the tier list, try Wolf.
Show me how to kill Galamoth as her. On the PSP version at least, she can’t hit him for more than 1 damage.
Ganon is my main in both Melee and Brawl. I play both games the normal way, though.
Yeah that’s great and all, but to say “you absolutely must have electronics” and “hard mode is damn near unbeatable without it” is nowhere near the truth.
It’s funny, because a new tier list for Brawl went up a day later…
S: Meta Knight, Snake, Wario, Falco, Diddy Kong, King Dedede
A: Marth, Mr. Game & Watch, Pikachu, Olimar, Ice Climbers, R.O.B., Kirby
B: Lucario, Zero Suit Samus, Toon Link, Pit, Donkey Kong
C: Peach, Luigi, Fox, Wolf, Sonic, Sheik
D: Bowser, Zelda, Pokmon Trainer, Ike
E: Lucas, Mario, Ness, Yoshi, Samus
F: Jigglypuff, Captain Falcon, Link, Ganondorf
Characters are in order for tiers. Some things are downright wrong (namely Sonic, should be lower by about 2 tiers, Donkey should probably be higher, but has no usage), but it’s better then the last one.
I like Sonic, but yeah he is pretty sad in that game from everything I’ve seen.
I was told by a Brawl enthusiast friend of mine that says that Sonic’s game is evolving to the point where he’s really good at stick-and-move shenanigans. Because of his speed, a single whiffed move almost anywhere on the stage can mean a combo.
Ok, first of all, to counter your Brawl enthusiast, I’m friends and former schoolmates with the undisputed best Sonic player around (Malcolm)…
ALL Sonic has is his hit and run, survivability (well most do…), and a rare gimp. He also has no priority and no kill power. His fastest potential kill move comes out frame 13, in addition, will probably be weakned because it’s such a good move. Next fastest is 17-18 frames…and they’re not even THAT strong.
The most Sonic can guarantee a punish for is about 15-20%, usually on a grab, hits, uthrow, or sometimes a spindash to fair/uair. Anymore, it will be feinting and trying to outpredict your opponent, which is what Sonic does, with a lot of hard work for little payoff for the player.
Part of me wants to put Tanooki Suit higher because statue grants invincibility and can be used to kill a number of things you normally wouldn’t be able to. But then again, it’s pretty high already.
Raccoon (Tail) needs to be in High because flight is awesome in a game where around a third of the levels reward you for flying. Tail also can kill a number of enemies that fire can’t. Only time you want Fire Mario over Raccoon is in water levels.
And while we’re at it, how about a full Map Item tier list:
God:
Whistle
Demi-God:
Hammer Suit, P-Wing
Top:
Tanooki Suit, Hammer
High:
Leaf, Fire Flower
Mid:
Mushroom
Low:
Frog Suit, Starman, Lakitu’s Cloud
Very Low:
Music Box
Trash:
Anchor
Whistle is top, no questions asked. Go straight to your favorite world or use it to finish the game quickly.
Hammer Suit is pure bliss. P-Wing is basically “Beat a level for free” and leaves you with Raccoon Mario afterward. It’s not above Hammer Suit because you can never have it for more than one level.
As for Tanooki: Flying is awesome. Tail is awesome. Statue is awesome. Thus, Tanooki is Raccoon with even more awesome. Hammer is cool, too. It’s needed for one of the whistles and to get all the goodies on World 3. Sadly, it doesn’t have much use after World 3 which is why it’s not higher.
More levels benefit from Raccoon than Fire Mario. Additionally, there are more levels where you want Raccoon Mario but there are only fire flowers than the other way around.
Fire Flower is awesome in World 3 and 6, along with some areas in 7. Unfortunately, fire immunity is rather high among enemies. Mushroom is here as opposed to Low because most levels have a power-up at the beginning of the stage, basically making this either a Leaf or a Fireflower, though you don’t get to choose.
Perhaps I’m being harsh on Frog Suit, but its mobility on land is really bad. Hard to control, though it’s useful in water (mainly for getting to some of those pipes). Most of the time, though, you’ll want even a Mushroom over Frog. Starman is low because when used, it only works at the beginning of the stage; Starmen found in levels are generally located at a point where you can really use them. They do have their uses against the Hammer Brothers though. Lakitu’s Cloud skips a stage, but has the very bad drawback of pushing you back in front of that stage if you die in the next one (unless you go into a pipe or something beforehand).
Music Box can be used if you have nothing else to use and are small Mario in Worlds 3 and 4. Otherwise, you want to fight, not avoid, hammer brothers because of the items they drop.
Anchor stops the airship from moving if you die on that level. Uhm, yay?
EDIT:
Fire Flower moved up because of its boss killing and hammer brothers slaying abilities. A number of airship levels don’t carry fire flowers in the level.
I think you are undervaluing Firepower. I’d rather have Firepower than Tail against a fair amount of the ranged enemies in the game, especially the Hammer Bros and their various kinfolk. You can also kill Bowser by shooting him with enough fireballs if you want, rather than doing the “dig your own deathtrap” thing. And as you pointed out, Firepower trumps Tail hard on water levels.
On your map item tier list, I would argue that Lakitu’s Cloud belongs in Very Low with the Music Box. I know I never used it.
There’s plenty of water levels in SMB3, is toad really that bad on land? I know the controls are awkward, but it shouldn’t be in the hands of a professional. The jump boost is nice also.
Would you really use Frog Suit over any of the other abilities? I don’t even really like Frog Suit in water much, personally. I’d rather be able to attack.
Looking at most of the other abilities I’d say no, but from my experiences I’ve raped levels with Frog Suit on. Just how you play I guess.
Good point. I’m focusing too much on the immunities and forgetting how many levels have enemies that just get destroyed by fireballs. Most of World 3 and 7, and some levels in World 4 and 6 are made tremendously easier by fireballs. Plus, it’s great for boss killing and Hammer Brothers slaying like you said.
I guess it depends on how much one really needs to skip a level. Granted, if they’re really good in the game, the Cloud is useless, but then again, so is the Music Box. I figure there’s more use in skipping a pain in the ass level rather than putting Hammer Brothers to sleep.
Starcraft:
God: Terran
High: Protoss
Mid: Zerg
On the Frog suit, can’t you run normally if you grab a koopa shell IIRC?
Yes. But there aren’t always shells around to grab. Plus the Koopa can pop and damage you if you don’t throw the shell. And again, bottom line here: Are you ever going to be in a situation where you go “I have to pick between Firepower and Frog Suit… I pick Frog!”? Ever?
Megaman X8
1.Ultimate Armor X
All of the boss weaknesses, the second best charge shot in the game, no hitstun, and can fully recover his life when swapped.
2.Zero/Black Zero/Layer
All three play the exact same, and all can use the best weapon of the game, the Sigma blade, it hits the entire area in front of the characters pretty much when in the air, and is very fast.
3.Neutral Armor X
Best charge shot of the game, hits in every direction in front, and has all boss weaknesses at the strongest, can’t go wrong with it.
4.X/Alia
Decent all around, with boss weakness.
5.Axl/Palette
Worst characters of the game, with the worst regular buster attack.
Can shoot in every direction though.
Axl isn’t that bad. Infinite ammo on all special weapons, some of which are really good. Axl’s grenade launcher in particular I remember being really useful.
Alia was the worst character in the game IMO. Took worse damage than everyone else IIRC. The X-style weapons were also pretty terrible for the most part.
All of the girls take more damage than the boys in MMX8.
Also Axl is not even close to useless. I’d say MMX8 does a really good job of balancing all 3 characters.
Axl’s regular buster kind of sucks, but why he should be using it? He has some very good special weapons and unlike X, most don’t require any charging or energy. Also hovering is very useful for platforming and boss fights. His main problem is his lack of defense.
