Tier list discussion

drobizh: There are tons of people that don’t understand how they work, really. It’s a simplified comparison for newer players that demonstrates how the tier list actually comes into effect.

That tier list only applies to Japan. People have trouble grasping these concepts because no American Hugo player will ever win a tournament or even come close to the finals so it is hard for them to understand that Hugo is rated so high in Japan.

The tier list in America goes something like this IMO and this is from what I see Americans struggling against the most. Like Duralath said, those characters listed in the tier list are high because of the player behind them and unfortunately in America, we don’t have that skill level.

Top tier zoning Chun Li with excellent execution slightly over runaway build meter Yun
Ken only because I am able to win tournaments with him and many players struggle against me. Ken would be lower had I not won these tournies. There are however many strong Ken players besides me
Makoto because American players are good at doing 100% and tend to like guessing and parrying which greatly improves the character (aka I don’t have a brain so I don’t give a fuck mode) followed by Urien because American players have trouble blocking high low
And finally Dudley only because the character is so easy to win with against decent skilled players because of high low into super
And maybe Gouki because American players don’t know how to block and always get hit by spammed Tatsumaki, as well as Denjin Ryu because dash in backwards throw beats the reaction speed of most American players.

Every other character really doesn’t matter in America because and please do try to understand this, Rom’s Yang is only one person or Renic’s Alex is only one person of course not saying these are the only guys, I don’t think that is significant enough to even make a dent in the tier list because everybody else is so low skill leveled with that character. As hard as I struggle against a player like Rom who picks Yang, the majority of players in America who pick Yangs skill level are so low that it drops him in the tier listing because of that fact. The only characters that have a fighting chance besides those exceptions are players who pick the ones I listed in my tier list. These lower tier characters that I did not list require much skill to play and besides the exceptional players, American players just aren’t capable of ever making a difference with them.

So I guess it goes something like:

Chun, Yun
Ken
Makoto, Urien
Dudley

Gouki, Ryu (Denjin) - maybe

Doesn’t really matter the rest of the cast. I see random Remy beat Ryu at American tournies.

^ nice post.

Why is Yun at the top? Because of Pyrolee?

What was that he said again? I remember seeing it and was like “what…” and now everyone uses it to counter 3s

Dudley has an easier time with Chun than Makoto?!?!

I thought I was the only one who wasn’t sure about this, but it’s subjective to an extent, and you’re a Dudley player, even

who the fuck is viscant and why are his opinions on a game he doesn’t play important

Viscant is a SSF2T OG player. I can’t comment on his SSF2T skills, but his SF4 Zangief is very poor.

i agree with you completely & your list is spot on. a tier list changes depending on the normalized skill of the players. however, i think when one refers to a general “tier list” it should assume the highest present skill level… ie the current jap scene. my reasoning behind this is that though the tier list is arbitrary and completely useless practically, it serves as fruitful discussion and provides insight into chars

If you were to see tier lists as a “reference sheet” of what characters require the most effort to win with, going from least (top) to most (bottom), then tiers would apply to both high-level players and low-level ones. While there would be room for arguments regarding who sits where on the middle of the tier list, it’d be difficult to deny that winning with Chun is way easier than winning with Sean, regardless of your personal skill.

yeah hugo has pretty good footsies

those old american sf players are mad as a box of frogs
they can’t even play SSF II X because there are supers in it (!)
they say supers are retarded but the truth is : they want to fireball trap you until 2082
not in SF IV but in SF II DASH
i don’t know,i feel sorry for them
their evolution stopped so many years ago
it’s not a bad thing but then please don’t lurk / hang around / post about fighting games in 2010

i am an old SF player myself and i love dash, turbo, etc but christ

third strike is like kasparov vs deep blue
old SF games are heads or tails
third strike is all
