Throwing online

To start this off, I’m a Tekken and SF player but I’ve probably played Tekken more. I’ve been reading through some of the topics here and get the general consensus of throwing in SF to be positive. Now, I have no problem with people who throw but spamming it is a different story ONLINE ONLY. In SF, throws have a high priority over many moves such as an EX, etc unlike Tekken. The diff between the two games throwing is the frame rate(w/ Tekken, you have a better chance of breaking a throw than SF).

I don’t want to confuse anybody, I’m merely talking about online play which factors in lag and so forth. I played a Makoto the other day and half of his strategy was throwing. He was spamming it left and right, both throws esp. the back throw, and it was annoying. So if you factor in the slight lag, even though it was a green connection, and the frame window of escaping throws… it equates to a nightmare. I know the value of throwing in this game is crucial for wakeup game but if it’s being spammed, I don’t see where someone gets better from that. I’d rather not fight fire with fire and be cheap just to win because I learn nothing from it. If I were to play friends at my house, it’s not a problem because I don’t have to worry about lag, etc.

I’d just like to know everyone’s opinion on it… I’m not used to this much throwing in a game since I come from the Tekken world, where throwing is scarce. As bad as the netcode was for T5+T6, throwing became the art of being cheap.

Throwing is fine.

Throws have a very limited range and whiffing one leaves you totally open, besides this game is full of special moves that makes you inmune to throws like the famous shoruyken.

Also you have the options select. that is holding down back and grabbing, if the opponent grabs, you tech it and if don’t you do a lk. Of course, experts expect tech throws and can bait it.

About Makoto throw, remember that the range sucks and that they love to use it when they get the ultra, so just wait for it and neutral jump once she dashes.

Also if you’re playing online, try delaying your tech a little bit. Double tap the throw with a very small window between them. Be ready for a throw though, if you’re getting throw that much maybe you’re staying too much in the opponents face or letting them get it easier. Create some space and use some normals to protect and cover your space. You can also try to late tech throws while you’re blocking.

people get better by throwing, throwing someone over and over again is a major mind fuck. Not to mention, being able to consistently get in to throw them like that requires some knowledge of footsies, usually

If someone can’t tech throws, I’m gonna be spamming throws and tick throws on 'em.

Of course, no one can tech throws on MK9. So that’s all I do there.

You have so many options to deal with throws, though it’s actually not apparent to new players at first.

The tech window is 11 frames standing. You can’t throw someone in throw startup (2 startup frames + 2 active frames) and you have a tech window after it connects 7 frames.

Once you learn OS-tech, predictable throw patterns become a non-issue online. Down+Back+LK+LP timed to hit just after your opponent would throw will cover so many pressure options (Good players can bait this for big damage, but it shuts down newbies hard). It techs throws, and if they block, you now have momentum. It’s a seven frame window, which a gaping timing window to work with.

Throw immune reversals are also really easy to mash in this game. If you have Shoryuken FADC Ultra down, you can pretty much beat a predictable throw attempt for huge damage with no effort (It’s also safe on block).

So I’m telling you right now, what you’re complaining about is a huge non-issue once you’re good. Keep at it.

When you’re near your opponent, just assume (no matter who they are) they’re going to throw and go for it. I remember back when I would always get indecisive when my opponent would be near me–whether they’re walking up to me or jumping over me to land next to me. I constantly ate throws because of it. I know you might think it’s “spamming” or whatever, but throwing is a huge part of the game in Street Fighter 4, or any Street Fighter for that matter.

Teching throws online is something I’m ok at doing, but still not as good as many others here. If I never considered throwing as much as the opposition, I’d be getting thrown 90% of the time. Just start throwing more, or using the OS like others have mentioned.

Honestly, I look for opponents who do this. I consider it as teching practice.

That’s what you gotta do. I like playing against low PP opponents who jump. I need AA practice. =p
