Live Stream going from Best Bout Gaming! http://twitch.tv/teamkhaos http://twitch.tv/fgcpros

Thanks everyone for making it out. We clocked in 25 people for the night. Good stuff gang ; )

How do people feel about an official Tekken 6 tournament in the near future? Soul Calibur as well, we would like to promote both games.

Tekken 6 - Sure…Only thing is that its slightly dead but people could still play.
SC:V - HELL YES. But give the game a month to develop.

T6 yes. People will probably be more and more interested as TTT2 approaches. And yes on SCV of course.

I plan on stopping by on Tuesday to play some games. Is it five bucks to get in? Also what console are you guys playing on?

Five bucks to game all night, and you can come and go as you please. It’s almost entirely 360s, but there is one PS3. I think we have like, MK or something for it, but generally I’d say it’s just 360s.

SOUL CALIBUR V RELEASE PARTY at Throwdown Tuesday tomorrow night! Doors open at 7pm, also schooling for the big tournament (Best Bout Beatdown 9!!!) this weekend. Let’s go Portland!

SC5? not going

It’s not like you play any of these games anyway. Stay home and play Star Wars.

gg’s tonight everyone, lots o’ training for sure. Soul Calibur V is fun, looked like a few people had an idea about it. Thanks to everyone for making it out, the tournament this weekend should be hype, more info to come about it in a few. See you soon, school hard!

Hey gang,
Here is something I thought would be fun and useful for the Oregon community. I have done this in other things, and it has been good for perspective. It’s basically a Portland area yearly report, talking about the advancements in our scene, progress and such in terms of the community, skill level, and so on. Basically a sum up of the year. Ray had ideas similar to this, shouts and respect go that way.

Portland Fighting Game Community 2011 Report

Quick lead up: 2009 and 2010 were transition years as new players were coming into the scene with the introduction of Street Fighter 4, as well as old school players being brought back to the table after various degrees of absence (see yours truly). In the Portland area Versis opened and carried the torch for competitive gamers for a time, and Tilt and Ground Kontrol hosted tournaments for the new games. People hosted at their houses, most notably Fatbear’s Dungeon, Omne’s crib, Tsunamiken’s place, and the Sole Purpose house. In 2010 Portland lost a strong asset when one of the previous main organizers/torch catalysts RaybladeX exited the scene for Hawaii. Ray and company carried the group through much of the 2000’s, and his departure marked an end of one era in Portland gaming and eventually the beginning of the next stage. 2010 was a reformative year, also the year Best Bout was formed, mainly hosting casuals and tournaments at cafes and bars (see Tilt and GK again) in the Portland area. Team Khaos rose up to be the quality stream in the NW, covering almost all of Oregon and Washington at the time. In May 2011, Best Bout Gaming opened its own location in SE Portland and has been running tournaments and casuals ever since.

Community:
The Portland fighting game community has consolidated and been focused a great deal at the BB location, we have seen some new players enter the scene as well as some older players return (or at least make honorably appearances). When SF4 hit the scene in 2009 there was a massive influx of players/interest for the next couple of years, by 2011 some of the fad of it had worn off and the scene settled in with the people who were going to stay with it long term. We now have a consistent showing of dedicated players, some social/casual players still, and people who just like to support the scene. With many of the new games, interest has developed across the board. Portland has the great attribute that its scene is very centralized, we for the most part all meet in one place, all school together regularly. This is the strongest asset of our group I believe. Our SF scene is strong, Marvel decent (though falls short in comparison to Seattle’s epic Marvel community), and KoF now has become a focus augmented by a few of the top NW players in the Oregon area like Joel and LordBBH. Unfortunately our Tekken scene has not reformed, though people have commented they would like to see a return, it has not happened yet. Possibly at the end of 2012 TTT2 may draw local players and bring some hype back. Hopefully sooner than that we will see Tekken in the house again.

Games:
Many games came out in 2011 that helped local promotion. Marvel and later Ultimate were released, AE then AE 2012, KoF13, 3SO, and even MK9 (to a lesser degree) have given local gamers a wide variety of options. In Portland, SF4 remains the most played game, and for most of 2011 Marvel took up second. KoF was introduced at the very end of the year, and people were quick to get into it. At present Marvel and KoF run a close even for the second most played game in Portland, with Soul Calibur probably taking the third spot until SFxT hits the scene. MK9 received some early attention, but interest died down after an amount of time. Third Strike Online is still played by some of the people, it enjoyed some good attention during the down time after Evo, but unfortunately has had a tough time competing with the string of new games that have hit the scene. 3S is a Portland tradition of sorts (as some Seattle people remarked recently) I doubt it will ever die completely as this town has a love of retro, it will always have its place. We still have two of the Northwest’s top Third Strike players, Fatbear of course, and Anthony when he makes an appearance.

Players/Skill Level:
In the last year we have had some changes in the general and specific skill levels in the group. On a whole the group has improve a great deal, this is most likely from the condensed school sessions, more organized events, a bit of travel, and individual perseverance.

Street Fighter:
A year or so ago the top players were fairly clear, BBH, Fatbear, Virsaga, SamB, and Yangsing were the short list of top players in SF4. In a year’s time some of the players on that list turned their attention elsewhere, and some newer players stepped up. BBH and Fatbear remain the two top players, but other players such as Virsaga have been occupied with non gaming things such as wife and kid (congrats to all the pops now, Marcos, Sam Y, Ross). After winning the final Slugfest SamB (who is considered one of the more talented players in Portland) got into Marvel and eventually turned a bit of his attention away from the game. Luckily more recently with his showing at Salty Runback Revival it appears he is turning his attention again to Street Fighter. Simon (Yangsing) has also found interest in other things (LoL anyone?) but still can be seen at Best Bout to support the cause. Unfortunately we lost our top Akuma player (Angel) to school/work/LoL (damn you LoL!!!), but hopefully at some point he will return to unleash more vortex mixups on the group. Also good friend Kurt (Metal Health) moved away, taking a legit Adon/Dudley/Gen with him. With those change ups however we had some other players rise up, most notably Kevin (Kwyjibo/Honkey Adonis) with a super solid Cody. Kwyjibo has proven he is one of the top players in the area now, and most recently took second in a vicious battle with Fatbear at our last Beatdown tournament. Look out BBH and Fatbear, the kids are coming up. Aside from Kevin, players such as Aaron (Ronnicle) have put their work in to level up, and newer players such as Ben the Balrog player have made big impacts. Some veteran players such as Omne and Mackenzie have been making returns to the game as well. We hope to see the consistent return of other veteran players such as FullMetalRoss, hopefully sooner than later. Some of us other players have made strides as well, again the general skill level of the group has risen from what it was. In the end however, LordBBH and Fatbear continue to be our most dominating players, hopefully we can give them a good run for it this year.

Marvel:
This is an easier list. Marvel in Portland/Oregon was dominated by a handful of players in 2011. BBH, 1TruKing, and Yzae B have been the dominating factors over 2011, with SamB, Kwyjibo, and Yangsing taking up the next spots. Fatbear is currently on the rise in Ultimate, and for new players Yugo, Chocomuffins, and REK503 have been putting in their work to level up.

KoF:
The breakout hit. This game is easily dominated by many time champion Joel from Eugene, who is simply a monster at KoF. Following that is LordBBH, who recently won the Salty Runback tournament. After that it becomes more hazy who is in the top spots as the game is very new still.

What’s next:
We are going to be working on recruiting more players for the scene, and it’s my hopes we see even more of a level up in skill and dedication. More players need to travel, going up to Seattle is always good, attending larger tournaments like NW Majors, Cali events, and Evo of course helps the cause. Though we have made big improvements from last year, more local players need to get into tournament mode, meaning more schooling, studying/research, and even a more aggressive state of mind when it comes to competition. It’s a lot of fun to kick it and play the games, but it’s also very rewarding to level up. People can really do both, that’s what we need more of this coming year.

Hey whats up, I showed up last week and saturday but you guys go later than the busses so its sort of a pain to show up on tuesdays. Anyone heading there that’s near the palatine hill area that could give me a ride? Thanks.
