Today begins Best Bout Ranbats Season 2! Again we will be running the weekly tourney for SSF4AE, MvC3, 3SO, and MK9 if applicable. Come on down, test your skills, and get some schooling for Northwest Majors!

GGs to Ethan for getting pwned in MvC3 AND AE. You got me on that runback, though. GGs to Panda for being the other okay Tekken player.

P.S. Sam B is free on NBA Jam. Holla fo a dolla!

Ha Bimmy had a good night! It looked like that NBA Jams was the real hype though. Don’t be a stranger son ; ) GG’s tonight to all, welcome to the new people. Lots of fun, I really wanted to see Kwyjibo win AE, he did send BBH to losers proper. Matt, you just ruining everyone’s groove son. Let’s go!

13: Bimmy

REK503 had a really good Idea of just using google docs so after some not-so-serious number crunching, here are the current ranking results for the second season of ranbats

Street Fighter 3: Third Strike
Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition
Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds

To basically explain how this ranking system works is its much like playing AE online where your Ranking Points = Your Player Points

Example Using 3S
Fatbear beats Bimmy - Fatbear won’t get a lot of points
Bimmy beats Fatbear - Bimmy would be getting more points

The first tournament, the system seems a bit weird, but after a few tournaments happen, everything will level itself out.

You can find out more about this program here - Manny Tracker True Skill Ranking System

IN OTHER NEWS

The Ranking Battles just got a whole lot more serious with some news that I have secured in regards to NWM3.

**The TOP 2 from the Ranking Battles in overall stats/points for Arcade Edition and Marvel vs Capcom 3 will receive a seed spot into NWM3, if the people who qualify are unable to attend, then that spot will roll over into the next spot. **

If there is a tie in points, then the determination will be by victories between the players.

SEE THIS POST

damn dude SRK must have been down that weekend because i didn’t see these posts at all, or maybe my phone is just a joke…i will definitely go down there for street fighter eventually.

Slash, could you explain why, for example, you and I have a different number of points in 3S, even though we both got fifth? Is it based on number of victories? And if it is, then wouldn’t losing quickly and running through the losers’ bracket give you better points? I just know I beat you in winner’s but you have more points than I do, and I can’t find any kind of FAQ or summary of the Manny system in the link provided. Looks like mostly update/technical blog posts.

Rek503 has more points than I do, and he got seventh. @_@ I don’t understand at all lol. Why don’t you guys post a screenshot of the brackets anyway? That’d be nice to have.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/684/92876155.gif/ So there is the 3S bracket and hopefully this explanation will make it easier to understand

http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/trueskill/ (There is a page explaining it…kinda)

Basically, the system is built to rank people based on who they played. But it also takes in to account who they lost to, and the person that they lost to, what placing they got…I’ll ask Will to come explain it…it’s his thing haha

Looking at the bracket and the numbers, this is making more sense, thanks. I like TrueSkill, BlazBlue used that system or a similar one that was pretty accurate, I thought. Like you said, everything should level itself out eventually.

I actually like this system a lot too because it, to me, welcomes new players out too. Cause when you look at it, a 6 week ranbat, with the 1-8 pt system, if someone takes first in three ranbats in a row, any new players wouldn’t have a shot at winning, with this, I think they would.

So under this system I could show up win beating bbh fatbear and samb along the way and end up with the most points because I come in with 0 and they lose more than they really should because I’m at 0? Almost encourages me not to play then show up for one tournie and win it doesn’t it?

TrueSkill is similar to ELO Ratings (used in chess and other competitions)
Here’s basically how it works.
Each player has a skill rating.
The higher your opponents rating is the more your rating goes up if you win.
The inverse of this happens when you lose (IE your skill goes down more if you lose to scrub and less if he’s top tier)
Your skill rating is modified by how many games you’ve played, so the more you play, the more accurate your skill rating.
So a good player with few games may actually be ranked lower than a okay player with many games.
The TrueSkill rating should become pretty accurate after about 50 games.

Hope this helps, I’m working on some cool new features for Manny Tracker which should make it easier to use for what you guys are doing. You can check my blog for updates and what not.

Marty, if that were the case, then this is a small example of what would happen,

Original Bracket from 6 weeks of AE at BB

Modified adding in player ‘Bracket Breaker’ and keeping the bracket as close to possible, but losing only to BBH in winners/grand finals

Skill List Comparisons

So as you can see, the top 4 are virtually no effect on them, and even Fatbear, who lost to Bracket Breaker in the demo, still placed 3rd.

I’ve added multiple league support and Im working on supporting multiple events in TIO and deleting players and matches.
Let me know if you want me to send over a new build to you and what you would like me to prioritize on working on.

P.S. Dont forget to show some support on the Manny Tracker post here in SRK and maybe your site?

or just boycott bbg

Ha, this is where lol can take you, watch out.

I appreciate the discussion on the Ranbats for sure. From being a chess instructor I am familiar with ELO system, seems to work well for that game. I know they have extended it to gaming as well with few revisions. I like that the ranbats lead up to NWM, our last ranbat of the season will be that Tuesday before NWM.

Lastly shout out to the people that have been helping out with the cause lately, appreciated greatly. The Portland Retro Gaming Expo was a good promotional point, we are going to be interacting with some of the other gaming promoters in town for some stuff coming up. Gonna be busy all the way up to NWM, if anyone needs a lift up there week of we will be doing carpools for the peeps for sure.

ps NBA Jams TE is the best game out there. I call Bimmy out my Chitown will crush

Also on the note of NBA Jams, we will be doing some OG games tonight at BB. This includes Bomberman (streamed), Jams, and some other classics. We will also be doing fighters, it’s a mash up of everything. Doing a random game tournament as well. If you have a game you want to see played, bring it!
