Meh. Just ask. Most of the people I saw didn’t mind one bit as long as you weren’t some arrogant ass to them. Being polite and friendly is possible the best shield to jail time in a foreign land.

I have traveled to all kinds of countries and cultures, and I really hate when people go to a foreign land to intentionally commit crimes. I hope they throw the book at these assholes and they don’t get the deportation/banned from country slap on the wrist.
I have even been to the Middle East (Saudi Arabia, Qatar) and no one gave me even a hint of trouble or bothered me at all. I think one of my worst experiences as a tourist was actually in Panama, and they hate people from the US. I was refused service at a few places and was told “Yankee go home.” It didn’t really bother me, all they did was lose money that I would have spent at their establishment. At a restaurant after someone said that to me I told people in the line that they didn’t serve Americans the entire line of tourists just left the establishment at once, which was pretty hilarious. Owner of restaurant was so angry after all of his customers left because he couldn’t shut his stupid mouth.
