This Feels Different... OLD Abel Match Theory Thread

with regards to the video, i think hfz said it best, watching videos won’t really do a whole lot for you compared with the actual knowledge of what to do, because not every match is cookie-cutter what is supposed to happen. you should learn how to deal with cammy in the way that you find is best, I find watching other people fight often promotes imitation

Any good info on Fei? I don’t have much experience against him but generally find that when I lose, I’m getting the shit spammed out of me by chicken wing. I block and punish when i can but a lot of the time hes still safe enough to follow up with a ton of options: cw/ex cw again, flame kick, st.hp, throw, etc. His wake up seems pretty decent too…ex cw stuffs cross ups and reminds me of ex messiah. Flame kick is a pretty decent DP, not to mention hes just ridiculously fast (i also really hate his low short). Sorry if you guys touched on this already, I didnt see anything on the first page and only skimmed through the last couple pages of this thread.

you’re best bet is to just play the matchup until you have a better grasp.

this matchup is an uphill battle for abel, but you have options. a few quick pointers:

don’t turtle.
mix it up.
limit your quick get ups. cammy likes to exploit abel’s horrid wakeup options and will hooligan you to death. if we expect you to do a quick standup after knock down and you don’t…we are left open and you are free to not get in our mixup.

feel free to add me if you want. i’m on pretty much every night and don’t mind going round after round.

Man, i played StarNab a couple of weeks back who’s like ranked number 7 on the live leaderboards, and he was pissing all over me with chicken wing, i was trying to backdash and jump that shizz, not happening, if you block, then its a case of throws and neutral jump, but heh, dash in forward kick was a dream, i got so many counter hits its unreal, still lost pretty badly though. And also on wake up rolling past him i never thought of blocking, cos he flame kicked a lot, guess i have to play safer next time.

You can non-EX roll any CW and easily ultra (or CoD combo). Loses to throws, sure, but will absolutely stop people from spamming CW. Standing strong is good, too.

Roll mix ups on Fei quickly stop them from CW’s after a knockdown so after a while you can train him to not do it still I haven’t played Starnab I know he is a very good Fei though

st.mp it what worked the best for me against my local fei player. it beats out or trades with his CW like 100% of the time. if you can get him in the corner thats also a good place to keep him. bait out flame kicks and punish hard

Thanks for the tips, all. Will def try out st.mp/roll mixups some more. Im guessing st.mp on reaction might even be a bit easier than using it on blanka ball. baiting flame kicks is def whats worked best for me in the past as well. Also, kinda funny, was prowling the fei long threads and saw this:

http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=207995:

Their abel matchup thread has some pretty good info but ultimately basically advocates smart cw spam and mixups, lol.

lol apparently anyone without a DP has “poor anti air”

and lol @ they totally ignored what juicebox said… CW spam against a good abel = you’re gonna get fucked up real bad.

Oh hi CW meet FS. My buddy plays Fei and the hardest part for me to get by is his range and poking speed. It reminds me of the Chun Li match up only not as bad.

Reading matchup information in 95% of the other threads is pretty much a waste of time. For any character against any character. It’s basically stating the obvious (like “if Abel rolls, just throw him”), or is full of poor information due to the thread being ancient or nobody posting in it having played against a good opponent (like “abuse Abel’s lack of anti-air and jump at him freely”).

I play Gouken a bit and virtually everyone’s anti-Gouken stat is “bait counter, then throw”. In some threads, that’s virtually the entirety of their matchup tips against Gouken. It’s pretty funny… in the age of the internet and the ubiquity of opponents with SF4 (and resources like Youtube and Wiki and all this), very few people that post on these forums can come up with better strategies than stating move properties, or resorting to generally applicable “tips” like “bait this move, then do this move”.

That’s why HAV’s information (and others’) in this thread is helpful. The only other person I can think of that’s gone to a similar length is UltraDavid in the Gief forums.

VS CAMMY (probably 6-4, not really all that bad)

  • Standing forward is a god send in this match, it will snuff out her jump RH and beat or trade with her strikes. Most importantly, it keeps her out of mix up range and that is very important.

  • If you expect her to ex strike, do not try to AA this, just move, backdash, jump back, neutral jump, roll, whatever. Get the fuck out of the way. Keep an eye on her meter.

  • If she does get in her mix up range crouch block and get ready to late tech, don’t get antsy cuz if you do and whiff a tech shell hit you with a TK strike into a painful combo. If you can’t seem to get out of the mixup look for an oppurtunity to EX roll if you really need to.

  • Show her that she cant jump in free and play footsies with her. Utilize S.lk, F.mk, Cr.Rh, and the occasional LK wheel kick. use abel’s dash to your advantage if the cammy is looking sedentary. Watch your ankles for random arrows. You can’t fight this match in fear of cannon strike as it will limit your offensive output. A good cammy won’t do it often without meter at which point it becomes predictable.

  • Blocked cannon strike Gets ultra’d with revenge meter and dash f.mk - hp - xx without meter. If the cammy decides to back-knuckle for some reason you can Launch her right out of it.

  • Wheel kick works well when cammy is dicking around building meter. If you notice the cammy begin to wrecklessly spam tk strikes for meter test them with a fat wheel kick.

hope this helps

HOLY CRAP RYAN!! This is excellent info!!! Thanks!!

Don’t forget that you can also CoD the recovery of cannon spike on block as well if you don’t want to have to rely on hitting the 1-frame link to punish.

Also, blocked improperly space cannon drill can be TT’d after the first hit is blocked.

Probably isn’t the right thread for this, but I’m letting you guys know that I’m playing Ken for awhile.

Ken ONLY.

Once I learn how to play footsies with a character that actually HAS THEM, then I’ll probably have better footsies when I revisit Abel.

P.S. Ken has more offensive mixups than Ryu, fights Akuma and Sagat the same way Ryu does, and pushes Zangief further away. Now you won’t ask me why I won’t play Ryu instead

Peace, JBK.

I learned a lot of footsies from Vega and playing ST. I guess ken could work for Abel has some similar normals.

Anyone know a good way of dealing with deep jump-ins, they go straight over c.mk and c.hp.

roll away, or jump back fierce.

This is something I posted a while back:

Also, adding more:

Cammy can set up hooligan throw “traps” when you quick get up a dp and off of forward throw.

  • No reversal will get you out of this.
  • I’ve been messing around with mashing cr.jab on our wake-up and it seems to work some of the time, but I’m not sure as of yet why it only works sometimes. It might just be my friend mistiming it.

My friend likes put me in throw/tkcs mixups.

  • Mashing throw will get you hurt bad.
  • Learn to late tech.
  • You can crouch block all dive kicks.
