This Feels Different... OLD Abel Match Theory Thread

Yea in that video it was the clinch and I’ve missed the c.fp a few times so I can see why you would want to go for the guaranteed. Busta you and Juice got some mad skill with Abel, much props to you guys.

Good info Strider! I didn’t think you would be able to do anything to him during that part because of the electricity.

^ theres tons of good abel players. HAV, rico suave not just me. to be honest im probably one of the weaker abels now compared to the tourney abels that are good. they are consistently playing and placing in tournies. i just got back into the tourney scene after a long break from this game. workin my way up again.

I’ve been messing with the backdash -> EX F.Sky in training mode but during actual play the Blanka users usually do the Ultra as a cross-up and it just throws me right off.

^ wrong place but lol, its just i dont really play that much. im trying to play more but meh i hate online… a lot. when im on hit me up and we will play.

I always just roll away lol Also I have no clue how to fight Cammy

I just saw something from the vids, and I like to share it with everybody here.
To punish Chun’s Hazanshu & Bison’s st.rh:
FA Lv2.> dash cancel > st.fp > fp cod > FADC > cr.fp > UC
(I’m not sure if it’s FA Lv.2, but I think it is)

Here are the vids:
vs Chun-Li (@ 00:40)

vs Bison (@ 03:10)

thats good. But Id trust EX cod , or Jump in LP more. Seems like to get LV2 FA off you have to know because I think bisons st.RH recovers fast enough to do something afterwards. But Hmm…

It doesn’t matter what FA level it is, because they’re not hitting with the FA there. It’s Lv. 1, if you care (you shouldn’t), but Lv. 1 or 2 there would produce the exact same result, because they’re dash cancelling out of the focus anyway.

Anyway, do you know who those guys were in the first video you linked? Both Master Abels. I’m curious.

Thanks Arkayne!! It’s good to know EX COD can punish that too.
And thanks HAV for detailing on the FA. I don’t know Japs either,
but I keep hearing the announcer saying “monki-san”,
I’m not sure that’s the Abel master’s name,
maybe hfz69 could answer that?

ok, I’ve found out the name’s of the Abel masters from this link:
http://jbbs.livedoor.jp/bbs/read.cgi/game/44889/1250063737/7
and I use google translate and Kanji Converter.
In this video: http://d.hatena.ne.jp/video/niconico/sm8339434
The first Abel (vs Chun-Li) is ??? (makki)
The second Abel (vs Akuma) is ??? (yu ya)

well actually chun’s hazanshu if you have good reactions, you can react with a lvl 2 focus (crumple) also i think we knew about the bison one, since you can do fa dash TT against a st.rh.

Retracting this whole post since in my studies I’ve found that sf4 sucks for giving reversal DP armor break properties

yeah the first abel is makkii and 2nd is yuuya.

anyway nice abels and nice video quality

Yay!!! I just found out the strategy vs Ryu has been updated!
Thank you HAV!!!

I’ve just spent about two hours getting torn up by a pretty average Akuma. He wasn’t using the jab\RH loop at all, but it was still pretty solid run of the mill Akuma. I’m completely out of ideas on bow to handle this match.

You play footsies for a while, maybe get a knockdown which ultimately ends in a reset of the match by teleport, and then you’ve got an angry Akuma who wants his life lead back. You footsie some more with st.lk but sooner or later he gets in.

At this point, unless there’s a mistake to punish, I’m lost. Sure his RH pressure can be blocked, but it’s tight enough to discourage attempting counters. You block it for too long and you either have to tech a throw or you have to deal with something being cancelled into a lk demon flip.

Where is the opening? That’s my big problem with this match. Where is the gap for me to start a counter offense against the glass juggernaut?

I see the demon flip as an opening. He has a few options but a focus beats two of them a d rolling beats the other two. Neither set up a good offense for you becase of the recovery on the flip attacks being so short. Sometimes falling sky grabbed the flip on reaction. Sometimes it got stuffed. I’ll hit up training mode to work out why.

What are some general strategies to employ in this matchup. Straight up rushdown won’t work, defending and counter attacking is pointless and trying to find a middle ground seems to just delay the inevitable.

I am absolutely clueless on this matchup.

Well, there is an Akuma section clearly marked on the first page. I’d suggest that as a start.

As for other stuff… you just have to play smarter. I think your post is kinda funny. You talk about getting a lead, then having Akuma go after you with an offense that you can block/tech on reaction.

Sounds like you’re still in the lead to me.

You’ve even recognized points of escape from his offense… You’re just upset that you can’t turn it into your own offensive opportunity. My question is: why do you need to?

Sometimes, it’s just much better to wait shit out, and look to escape. Not everything needs to turn into offense.

Be patient. Don’t rush into silly mistakes. Chances will arise… but don’t force them… especially with a lead.

I read your entry in the first post before I posted anything, and it’s pretty much in line with my way of thinking. You’re screwed 99% of the time in this matchup.

I see your point, and it’s definitely good stuff but rarely do you get enough of a lead to sit on. We’re talking about the sort of lead you get from a couple of st.shorts and maybe a F+MK, cl.HP xx COD if you got super lucky early in a round. The sort of lead he’s going to abolish or even out if he gets in on you.

I’m totally cool with being patient and sitting on a lead, but the problem is he’s got such good mixup opportunities available to him that you can’t afford to simply sit there and weather the storm for too long. Especially considering how scary his wakeup shenanigans can be if you’re without meter.

I’ve tried setting up a brick wall of st.lk, cr.mk and F+mk. It does work to an extent, but with so many options at his disposal and with such huge potential damage out of so many of those options, sooner or later you have to make something of something, otherwise he’s going to get a lead on you, and if you’re playing a patient, non-air-fireballing Akuma who manages to get even a tiny lead on you, it looks alot like standing at the bottom of a very big mountain.

See, I don’t think Akuma’s mix-up is that damn serious, unless he knocks you down. You can afford to sit there for a long time against him. That’s what I’m learning. There’s really just not that much going on. He does some RH’s, he tries to jump in… whatever. It’s not that hard to deal with, and find points of escape.

I used to get real antsy, and try to find places to counter poke, and try to turn the tides, but I’m learning now that that’s not really necessary… and more importantly, it doesn’t work anyway. Abel has slow moves. Akuma’s gaps aren’t that big on the ground. Trying to hit the gap can be a really bad idea a lot of the times. You’ll just get stuffed.

SF4 doesn’t have a guard bar… so just hang out. Force him to try to throw you to get damage. At that point, he’s gonna have to walk all the way up to you to try to do damage. You can use that against him, and start to get your shit off. You have to be very patient in this match to get the opening you want. That’s what I’m learning. Don’t force it. Chill. There’s not so much going on that you can’t just be patient. Once you find your spot, try to get in what you can, but don’t keep trying to force an opening that just isn’t there.

Updated Ryu section with new video.

nice update, i heard team kanagawa beasted on team chiba… (holy crap shubaban ate fuudo just like that)
