I’ll weigh in on Abel/Rufus later today. I’ve got plenty of experience with this match.

Vid from Grand Finals at BF Arcadia #4. If anything, best thing out of that was Rico sharing that jumping LP will stuff lariat.
That zangief sucked bad… that is a really poor interpretation of the matchup, he kept letting abel do wheel kicks for free among other things. Terrible
Good shit to Rico though
I watched that live. Gief had no idea how to play the match.
And J. JP isn’t some magic wonder button. It can beat Lariat. It can also trade.
For it to even do that, you have to hit Gief, a tall character, with a Jab, high. I bet Gief can block, and Lariat before you even hit the ground.
And maybe it’s just me, but I’m not trying to get too close to Gief anyway.
I get the impression that guy thought Abel was free for Gief
Ok, in this video he EX CoD, FADC back, and ultra?

Or would this fall into the EX armor tricks thread?
^wrong thread and this isnt ex armor tricks anyways. but j wong did waste 2 meters to fadc when he couldve just ultra’ed after ex cod.
Well I’m a scrub and can only pull it off in training mode but it’s pretty hard to time the ultra after AA EX cod without the FADC, I feel like either I’m too early and it doesn’t come out or I’m too late and I don’t hit the ultra. So I can understand why you’d want to burn the 2 bars if it means a guaranteed hit.
^ no its not hard. practice it more and you will learn not to waste the meter, i mean he was doing it against seth, wasting the meter is fine because a hit ultra he is pretty much dead but against other characters i wouldnt waste the meter/i would rather save it for other things. even againts seth though, i wouldnt waste meter since its really not hard to do ultra after aa ex cod. lets not clutter this thread with useless things right now (things that arent being contributed) keep it in the other threads.
Edited for non-offensive, also censorship still sucks
lol, but to be honest, this is the best thread imo for sf4 (abel players). i would like it to be less filled with things that arent being contributed cuz u see what happened to the other threads?shit got too cluttered and the OP went missing and doesnt update. if you take it the wrong way then fuck my bad, i wonder why everyone takes my post so seriously, lol oh well. this thread is too good right now! but yeah wasnt trying to be an ass or anything. MAD props to hav and contributors
MAD PROPS to the first mod who cleans this thread of the extra stuff. anyone?
I didn’t take it wrong I’m just a mean person. Ask skisonic, he knows the magnitude of my hatred for anything with a pulse. Anyway you’re right, less meaningless dribble and more knowledge. So I’ll end it at this. And use this post to request the ryu matchup specifically if any ryu players are lurking. If only for more input on rushing them down though with the way DP moves rule the world in sf4 it doesn’t seem likely outside of safe crossups.
Updated Rufus section with some of my thoughts on the match-up. I’ll do Ryu tomorrow.
If there aren’t any other specific requests, I’ll resume alphabetically.
How comes there is no mention of empty messiahs in the Rufus section? (Unless I read it wrong which in that case ignore this post.) Recently I’ve been baiting and punishing this Rufus player’s ex messiahs HARD, but now usually just does empty messiahs so when I roll to punish he grabs me and puts me in major dive kick pressure, eventually I stopped trying to roll and started teching and tornado’ing empty messiahs but now he mixes it up so it’s a guessing game if he actually will messiah.
I’m not sure what you mean by empty Messiah, but if you mean he just doesn’t Messiah… yeah… obviously, nobody’s gonna do Messiah every time you get close. There’s clear mention of that, and the risk involved. Nothing you’re gonna do is gonna work 100% of the time, and going in to bait Messiah is a risky endeavor. I mention that a few times.
When trying to bait Messiah, you can eat throws. You can eat j. RH -> pain. Sure. Your other option is to stay back, and try to thwart Rufus’ attempts to move in on you. There are clear gaps in Abel’s defense which make this strategy flawed also.
Honestly, no matter which angle you take in this fight, there are clear flaws for Abel. That’s why he loses the fight…
You have to do something though. It’s like I said a couple of months ago: in this game you have to choose an optimal course of action. Don’t confuse “optimal” with “winning” though. If my strategy wins 40% of the time, and your strategy wins 30& of the time, my strategy is more optimal, but we’re both still losing. This is the Rufus fight. Abel loses it. You just have to make sure you’re not losing matches that you can win. It’s up to you to read your opponent. That’s Abel in general. There are no easy answers.
Empty meaning he doesn’t do a finisher, so if you try to roll the finisher he gets grabbed.
Just wondering, what are the best pressure options after ending CoD? It feels like I’m too late to get anything really meaty after it, by either rolling or dashing up. Does it really just reset the situation?
try meaty jump mk
Sorry I didn’t make myself clear enough when I said ‘empty’ messiahs I mean’t he does no follow up after the messiah. Baiting messiahs is easy but I bait messiahs and he will do no follow up so he won’t do the overhead, sweep or flip kick. That means that he can throw you out of your lk rolls which you intended to use to punish the ex messiah.
Oh… I’m not talking about blocking Messiah. You should be trying to avoid it alltogether. When I say roll it, I don’t mean block, then roll. I mean roll in anticipation so it misses, and you get free punish. Blocking it doesn’t necessarily get you anything. You’re in a mix that he controls.
