Thinking Of TVC and diving into it

SO I have TVC and the fightstick ( got it when it fist came out and loved it ) but its learning curve is weird were its not too difficult but it feels like it has great depth value that I can dive into. Im from Norcal and Ive heard there are players out here. I play SSf4 ( rufus/balrog ) and I was wondering if any skills I have from other fighting game will help translate to this game? I love the game but I dont want to also get so into a game that will die because of MVC3. Any thought?

Hiyo HaikuWar, its always good to see another person interested in the game! If you have some experience with other fighting games, you’ll be able to pick TvC without too much difficulty. You have more than enough time to get a handle on playing at competitive/decent level before MvC3. It also helps as preparation for MvC3 since some TvC mechanics are carried over.

From my perspective, TvC has around 2-3 stages:

1st stage: learning basic character combos, special moves, gameplay mechanics at the base level.
2nd stage: Implementing the mechanics into your playstyle.
3rd(ish) stage: Pulling off the crazy stuff you see on match vids, or your own custom combos.

In general, TvC borrows or tweaks a few gameplay mechanics from other games, so that should help with the learning curve. Some examples:

  • I think Baroque functions similar to focus canceling in SSF4 (i think that’s what its called?), or Roman Cancels from Guilty Gear. Instead of using two bars from your Super Meter (or a chunk of Tension), its Red Life. And it works from nearly any attack from any position, barring Supers/Hypers.

  • If you have some experience with Ryu and Chun-Li from 3rd Strike, that’ll help out a bit if you’re planning to use them.

  • If you played various gameplay styles (i.e., zoning, rushdown, defensive, punish, balanced, speed, power, etc.) there should be a character that caters to how you like to play.

  • Megacrash functions similar to ‘Bursting’ from Guilty Gear, except you can combo off it.

The people I know/remember from the NorCal TvC scene:

  • GCYoshi
  • KBeast/Vader Suicidez
  • Magnomanx

They’re all great players to play with and improve your game. You can also find a few people to play online via posting on the GameFaqs TvC boards or in the Online TvC chat @ Capcom-Unity: Whoops! Browser Settings Incompatible

Hope this helps!

Certainly, Street Fighter experience will do you some good in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, but general knowledge of the following games will serve you well in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom because game mechanics from these games can be found in this game: MvC1, MvC2, Melty Blood, Guilty Gear.

Also, don’t be led on the misconception of TvC “dying” because of MvC3. Not all players own a PS3 or Xbox 360, and as of right now, a healthy number of players only play Tatsunoko vs. Capcom on their Wii. So even when MvC3 is out, TvC will still and always be its own game, but if you learn how to play TvC at a proficient level, then you’ll definitely be ahead of MvC3 competition because of your TvC knowledge. Not all of TvC’s mechanics will be the exact same way in MvC3, but the definitive TvC elements that will appear in MvC3 will be: air dashing (albeit, character-specific), default button layout of primary attack buttons (weak, medium, heavy) on arcade stick, the basic combo system (a.k.a “Magic Series”) with a few character-specific exceptions, mid-air combo character switching, level 3 supers, and grounded wakeup tech recovery.

Ummmm… I don’t know what that is. Would you mind explaining what that is?

For example, your opponent finishes an air combo ending with a simple knockdown. Your character can roll forwards, backwards, or stand up in place as options getting back up.

Not too sure if there will be a MvC2 roll recovery that prevents most OTG attacks in MvC3, though.

Thank you very much for all of your help. So far I have been trying to decide which character to play, Whos an all around base good character ? I know there is ryu and all but I like Zero and I used him when the game first came out because I like his rush down non stop BAM ( also because I LOVE megaman X series ) like whats the run down on the characters?

Zero/Ryu is a top tier team. then again Zero with any character that lets him continue his combo and blockstring is a top tier team lol

If you’re looking for solid characters to start off wtih:

Ryu - Always a solid choice.
Ken the Eagle- Once again, a solid choice. Good variety of ways to attack too. Even better the more you learn his tricks + combos.
Ippatsuman - enough variety to pull some interesting combos and approaches, though he’s more for more advanced users due to resets and such.
Zero - A great choice for his speed, rushdown, and buster shots. Very user-friendly.

I can recommend these characters as a basis to start off with. Once you get a handle on the game, then it might be easier to mess with the more ‘unqiue’ characters (i.e., Doronjo, Y-2, Y-1, Volnutt, Batsu, etc.)

Pick PTX-40A

Infinite throw loop in corner

profit.

Oh, I thought there was something more to it. Thanks for explaining though.

no sir, its a chain grab from brawl xD

ontopic:

the friendly begginer characters, batsu, ryu, chun-li, zero, jun, ones you get deep into the game everycharacter have some really advanced combos, tactics, mixups and reset, it depend on how deep you want to get into your main character

So I have been playing a little more here and there and so far my team is Chun-li/Zero. I like Chun-li’s supers especially kikosho because its helped create distance and save zeros ass in a DSC,and the one you can super jump cancel after into combo ( srk movement AA ). Zero Im still getting used to.

I don’t use Chun-Li very much, but for Chun’s kick super, you can actually do her grounded lightning legs special (hold up and mash attack after the launch portion of kick super) to short ground combo to launch, then end with air combo.

so Kicks supers,Sj cancel to Legs, then does it follow then down and leave them stunned so you can relaunch?

Yeah you can air combo your opponent after you hit with Chun Li’s lightning leg super. Simply hold up and attack when the last kick hits.

so no Sj needed?

When lightning leg super is near its end, hold up and mash out lightning legs. Afterwards you can do a normal jump and do her jumping C loop into relaunch or you can dash forward and do a small basic combo into launch.

hey, long time no see phampy, we need to set up a day for us to fight again. I wouldn’t mind a couple of ryu and polimar mirror matches.

Been slowly working on tvc, Been playing a lot of SSF4,Tekken 6, TVC and MVC2. Honestly TVC seems more technical at times compared to all those games. Been working on my Chun-li/Zero team. So far Ive been looking for DHC bait/traps to set up Chuns launching super.

Have you been able to get some matches in offline? Or are you using online?
