I was gonna mention pokemon but if I recall the TV show came out not too long after the games did. Right then and there, I knew that shit was gonna blow up into something.
There were some shoes called saucony jazz that I thought…fuck man. Those shoes look UGLY as hell, but I remember one time that if you weren’t wearin them you got shitted on.
Another was CDs most notably for video games. I say this because of shit like Sega CD, Jaguar, all that shit did so fucking terrible when I was growing up. Looking at the popularity of N64, and how Saturn failed, PS was like the first console to ever have a successful run with CD based games. Now every console uses CDs and shit I haven’t even heard of.
Steam
Who would have guessed that a mid sized PC developer would get support from every developer and publisher (save Blizzard) on the PC market for their digital download service? Having a huge userbase at that.
i’m still surprised at this myself. it has pumped a breath of life into the pc genre though. a lot of games that would never be played are picked up in a hurry when they have steam sales. profit.
Online gaming. Yea stupid I know but as someone who moved around a lot as a kid i only ever played 1 player games so to me gaming with people over the internet was like “Tch yea right.”
I’d probably be a lot better at fighters tho if usable online for fighters had sprung up when i was in highschool instead of in my 20’s and working mad hours.

justin bieber i can understand. as soon as i heard his girly voice on the radio i knew the same dumb girls who catapulted twilight to fame would be all over his underage dick. but keisha? with that god awful song tick tock? first, she’s ugly. second, her music is garbage. usually girls with bad music compensate with good looks, but in her case, nope.
I didn’t think Facebook was going to get big, but that’s primarily because it was originally intended for college students only (you even had to have an email address with a domain from a list of accepted schools). When they opened it to the public MySpace was already big so I figured Facebook was too little too late.
Also chalk another up to Blu-ray’s. I figured that it was going to go the way of the Beta tapes, better but too expensive so they didn’t catch on. Also on that note - wide screen TV’s. Everyone had entertainment centers or setups catered to their existing full screens so I didn’t think the wide screens would catch on. I was selling TV’s during the transition and the sales were 75/25 in favor of full screens actually, but over time the full screens were just phased out.
Wii/Kinnect - there have been other attempts at “interactive” gaming in the past (like Eye Toy) that flopped hard so I thought these would follow history.
Electronic music - I used to LOVE techno/electronic music. I was really into the Bemani scene because of it and got to know a couple of music makers for the genre even. Today I hear a lot of electronic elements that used to be in rave songs even on the radio which I didn’t think would happen.
Street Fighter 4 - I was on the “only us niche tourney players will keep at it” boat before it launched but I’m eating those words now.
Ryan Reynolds- Remember that guy from 2 Guys and a Girl? Whatever. Now he is in major Hollywood blockbusters. Once he got big I thought “who IS this guy?..waitaminute, he looks like the guy from…it couldn’t be! It is! gtfo!”
Eminem - I saw Missy Elliot on MTV talking about “Dr. Dre’s new Protege”. Imagine my surprise, he was a white guy. But guy could rap! I didn’t expect that. I thought he would be a fad and then disappear. You know, fizzle out like a bad fart. But nope, 10+ years later, he’s at the top of his game, and one of the most famous rappers in the game.
Kinect - I thought this attempt would fail miserably. Now people around me that don’t normally game are talking about it and playing it.
Reality Shows - when Survivor hit it big back in 99 (?), I knew reality shows would blow up. I had no idea of the extent to which this would go.
I SO thought Kinect would fail solely because it had Kudo Tsunoda behind it. Of course the idea of Kinect has holes in it, but if you know how bad he fucked up the Def Jam Vendetta series with Icon, you’d be on board with me. I still don’t care about kinect, but damn I didn’t expect it to sell.
